About King Dasharatha

King Dasharatha (दशरथः) is the king of Ayodhya and the father of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. His name — literally 'ten-chariots' — records his legendary prowess as a warrior capable of simultaneously fighting in ten directions. Of the Ikshvaku lineage, direct descendant of Raghu (from whom Rama takes the epithet 'Raghava'), Dasharatha rules over a prosperous Ayodhya and counts the sage Vasishta as his kula-guru and the trusted minister Sumantra as his charioteer-confidant.

The tragedy of his life stems from one battlefield boon. Years earlier, Queen Kaikeyi saved his life in a battle against the asuras; in gratitude he granted her two boons, to be claimed whenever she chose. After the ceremonies of the putrakameṣṭi yajña grant him four sons through his three queens, his life seems complete. On the eve of Rama's coronation as Yuvaraja, the maidservant Manthara poisons Kaikeyi's mind; Kaikeyi invokes her two long-held boons — one placing Bharata on the throne, the other sending Rama into fourteen years of exile.

Dasharatha cannot refuse without breaking his word — the supreme dharma of an Ikshvaku king. He grants the boons with anguish, watches Rama leave for the forest with Sita and Lakshmana, and dies of grief six days later, crying out Rama's name. Earlier in his life he had accidentally killed the young ascetic Shravana Kumar while hunting — Shravana's blind parents had cursed him that he too would die of grief for a son. That curse reaches fulfilment here. Dasharatha's death is the ignition of the deeper arc of the epic: from this moment, Rama's return is no longer just a homecoming but a vindication of his father's broken word.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is King Dasharatha?

+
Dasharatha is the king of Ayodhya and father of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. A great warrior of the Ikshvaku (Solar) dynasty, descendant of Raghu, whose broken-hearted death from Rama's exile marks the beginning of the epic's deepest tragedy.

Why did Dasharatha exile Rama?

+
He did not wish to. Queen Kaikeyi invoked two boons granted years earlier — one for Bharata's coronation, one for Rama's fourteen-year exile. Bound by his word as an Ikshvaku king, Dasharatha could not refuse. He died of grief six days after Rama left.

Who are Dasharatha's three queens?

+
Kausalya (chief queen, mother of Rama), Kaikeyi (second queen, mother of Bharata), and Sumitra (third queen, mother of the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna). Each queen bore one or two of Dasharatha's four sons through the divine fruit of the putrakameṣṭi yajña.

What curse caused Dasharatha's death?

+
In his youth, Dasharatha accidentally shot the young ascetic Shravana Kumar while hunting, mistaking the sound of his water pot for an animal. Shravana's blind parents cursed Dasharatha: 'You too will die of grief for a son.' The curse reached fulfilment when he died grieving Rama's exile.
