राम O Rama, तेषु पुत्रेषु when those sons, हतेषु were killed, दिति: Diti, परमदु:खिता afflicted with great grief, भर्तारम् husband, मारीचम् Maricha, काश्यपम् Kasyapas's son, इदम् अब्रवीत् spoke these words.
Meaning
"O Rama! afflicted with great grief when her sons were killed, Diti said to her husband Kasyapa, son of Maricha:
भगवन् O Adorable one, महाबलै: by the highly powerful, पुत्रै: by your sons, devatas, हतपुत्रा अस्मि my sons have been killed, शक्रहन्तारम् capable of slaying Indra, दीर्घतपोऽर्जितम् acquire through long austerities, पुत्रम् mighty son, इच्छामि I desire.
Meaning
"O adorable one, your highly powerful sons, (devatas) have killed mine through extensive austerities. I am desirous of obtaining a (mighty) son capable of killing Indra.
sā'hṃ tapaścariṣyāmi garbhṃ me dātumarhasi| īśvarṃ śakrahantārṃ tvamanujñātumarhasi||1.46.3||
Translation
सा अहम् I, तप: austerities, चरिष्यामि I shall practise, त्वम् you, ईश्वरम् a supreme ruler of the world, शुक्रहंतारम् capable of slaying Indra, गर्भम् embryo (son), मे to me, दातुम् to give, अर्हसि behoves of you, अनुज्ञातुम् to give consent, अर्हसि behoves.
Meaning
I shall practise austerities. You ought to grant me a son who would be the supreme ruler of the world and capable of killing Indra. You can say yes (if you will)".
evṃ bhavatu, bhadrṃ te śucirbhava tapodhane| janayiṣyasi putrṃ tvṃ śakrahantāramāhave||1.46.5||
Translation
तपोधने O One having austerities as wealth, एवं भवतु 'Be it so', ते भद्रम् prosperity to you, शुचि: भव become pure, त्वम् you, आहवे in the battle, शक्रहन्तारम् slayer of Indra, पुत्रम् son, जनयिष्यसि will give birth.
Meaning
"O one vested with the wealth of austerities be it so. Prosperity to you Remain chaste, you will deliver a son who will kill Indra in the battle.
pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu śuciryadi bhaviṣyasi| putrṃ trailokyabhartārṃ mattastvṃ janayiṣyasi||1.46.6||
Translation
त्वम् you, शुचि: भविष्यसि यदि if you remain pure and clean, वर्षसहस्रे thousand years, पूर्णे after completion, मत्त: through me, त्रैलोक्यभर्तारम् lord of three worlds, पुत्रम् son, जनयिष्यसि will give birth.
Meaning
"If you remain pure and clean, on completion of a thousand years you will give birth to a son through me who will be the lord of the three worlds".
evamuktvā mahātejā: pāṇinā sa mamārja tām| samālabhya tatassvastītyuktvā sa tapase yayau||1.46.7||
Translation
महातेजा: highly energetic, स: Kasyapa, एवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having spoken, ताम् her, पाणिना with his palm, ममार्ज touched her body gently stroking, समालभ्य having touched her, तत: then, स्वस्ति इति "May good be with thee", उक्त्वा having spoken, स: Kashyapa, तपसे to perform austerities, ययौ had gone.
Meaning
Highly brilliant Kasyapa, having thus spoken, touched her gently with his palm, stroked her body and said, "May good betide thee". Having said this, Kasyapa went away to perform austerities.
नरश्श्रेष्ठ O Foremost of men, तस्मिन् when that Kasyapa, गते (सति) had gone, दिति: Diti, परमहर्षिता was exceedingly delighted, कुशप्लवनम् sacred spot named Kushaplavana, आसाद्य having reached, सुदारुणम् intense, तप: mortifications, तेपे practised.
Meaning
"O foremost among men after Kasyapa had left, Diti exceedingly delighted (at the prospect of having sons) reached Kushaplavana, and practised intense mortifications.
tapastasyāṃ hi kurvantyāṃ paricaryāṃ cakāra ha| sahasrākṣo naraśśreṣṭha parayā guṇasampadā||1.46.9||

नरश्श्रेष्ठ O Foremost of men, Rama, तस्याम् when she, तप: austerities, कुर्वन्त्याम् while doing, सहस्राक्ष: thousandeyed Indra, परया with great, गुणसम्पदा treasure of virtues, परिचर्याम् service, चकार had made.
Meaning
O foremost of men great treasure of virtues while she was practising austerities, the thousandeyed Indra began to serve her.
gātrasṃvahanaścaiva śramāpanayanaistathā| śakrassarveṣu kāleṣu ditiṃ paricacāra ha ||1.46.11||
Translation
शक्र: Devendra, गात्रसंवहनै: च एव stroking her limbs gently to regain their suppleness, तथा and, श्रमापनयनै: alleviating her fatigue, सर्वेषु कालेषु at all times, दितिम् Diti, परिचचार ह attended on her.

Indra attended on Diti, stroking her limbs gently from time to time to help her regain their suppleness and alleviate her fatigue.

रघुनन्दन O Joy of Raghus, Rama, अथ thereafter, वर्षसहस्रे when thousand years, दशोने short of ten, दिति: Diti, परमसम्प्रीता highly pleased, सहस्राक्षम् addressing Indra, अब्रवीत् spoke.
Meaning
O son of the Raghus ten years before completion of a thousand years. Diti, highly pleased with the services rendered by Indra, addressed him", saying:
सुरश्रेष्ठ O Excellent among devatas, Indra, याचितेन having been sought, महात्मना by the illustrious, तव your, पित्रा father, वर्षसहस्रान्ते after completion of thousand years, सुतं प्रति about a son, मम to me, वर: boon, दत्त: granted.

"O best of the gods your illustrious father granted me a boon for a son I sought on completion of a thousand years (of penance).
वीर्यवताम् among those having prowess, वर excellent, तप: austerities, चरन्त्या: performing, दश ten, वर्षाणि years, अवशिष्टानि remaining, तत: afterwards, भ्रातरम् brother, द्रक्ष्यसे you will see, ते भद्रम् may prosperity to you.

O the best of the brave ten years is yet to go (for completion of austerities). You will have a brother. May you prosper
tamahṃ tvatkṛte putra samādhāsye jayotsukam| trailokyavijayṃ putra saha bhokṣyasi vijvara:||1.46.15||

पुत्र O Son, तम् him, त्वत्कृते for you, जयोत्सुकम् having fortitude for victory, (अहं) समाधास्ये I shall unite him, पुत्र O Son, विज्वर: relieved of grief, त्रैलोक्यविजयम् victory over three worlds, सह भोक्ष्यसि you will enjoy together with him.

O Child I'll create in him eagerness victory. Together with him you will gain victory over the three worlds. Relieved of sorrows, enjoy you'll with him".
दिति: देवी Diti devi, शक्रम् to Indra, एवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having spoken, दिवाकरे when Sun, मध्यम् midday, प्राप्ते having reached, अथ thereafter, पादौ feet, शीर्षत: head side, कृत्वा having placed, निद्रया by sleep, अपहृता has been overcome.

After speaking thus to Indra, goddess Diti overpowered with sleep around midsday dropped off, her feet towards her head.
शक्र: Indra, पादत: towards her feet, कृतमूर्धजाम् with the hairs falling, अशुचिम् impure posture, तां दृष्ट्वा having seen her, शिरस्स्थाने in the place where she should place her head, कृतै placed, पादौ feet (having seen), जहास laughed, मुमोद च was pleased.

Indra laughed. He rejoiced at the sight of her ominous posture of sleeping with her feet towards her head and her hair falling on her feet.
bhidyamānastato garbho vajreṇa śataparvaṇā| ruroda susvarṃ rāma tato ditirabudhyata||1.46.19||
Translation
राम O Rama, तत: then, शतपर्वणा by the hundred edged, वज्रेण by Vajra, भिद्यमान: being severed, गर्भ: embryo, सुस्वरम् at high pitch, रुरोद cried, तत: then, दिति: Diti, अबुध्यत woke up.
Meaning
O Rama that embryo, being severed by Vajra having a hundred edges, cried at high pitch which awakened Diti".
मा रुद: "Do not weep", मा रुद: "Do not weep", इति शक्र: Indra, गर्भम् addressing embryo, अभ्यभाषत spoke, महातेजा: highly powerful, वासव: Indra, रुदन्तमपि even though crying, बिभेद severed it.

Highly powerful Indra, even while saying to the crying embryo "Do not weep, Do not weep" severed it.
na hantavyo na hantavya ityevṃ ditirabravīt| niṣpapāta tataśśakro māturvacanagauravāt||1.46.21||
Translation
दिति Diti, न हन्तव्य: "Sould not be killed", न हन्तव्य:" should not be killed ", इत्येवम् in this way, अब्रवीत् said, तत: subsequently, शक्र: Indra, मातु: वचनगौरवात् in deference to the words of his mother, निष्पपात came out.
Meaning
"Do not kill", "Do not kill", said Diti. Subsequently Indra, in deference to the words of his mother, emerged out of the womb.
वज्रसहित: armed with Vajra, शक्र: Indra, प्राञ्जलि: with folded palms, दितिम् Diti, अभ्यभाषत spoke, देवि O Devi, पादयो: feet, कृतमूर्धजा hairs falling( on her feet ), अशुचि: becoming impure, सुप्ता असि slept.
Meaning
Armed with Vajra, Indra addressed Diti with folded palms, saying, "O Devi you have slept, with your head towards your feet and your hair falling on your feet".
अहम् I, तत् that, अन्तरम् opportunity, लब्ध्वा having seized, आहवे in war, शक्रहन्तारम् that one who was to be slayer of Indra, सप्तधा into seven parts, अभिदम् severed, देवि O Devi, त्वम् you, क्षंतुम् to forgive, अर्हसि it is proper.
Meaning
"I have seized the opportunity and severed into seven pieces the foetus who would have been a slayer of Indra. O Devi shoudn't you forgive me"? इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे षट्चत्वारिंशस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the fortysixth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
