मन्त्रकुशलः well versed in counsel, मन्त्रेषु in counselling, परिनिष्ठितान् highly skilled in secret assessment, सः he, गुरुलाघवम् considering the merits and demerits, निश्चित्य deciding, मन्त्रज्ञान् intelligent ministers, तान् them, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.
Meaning
Sugriva, being skilled in secret assessment of matters, considering the merits and demerits, spoke to his council of ministers capable of intelligent counselling:
na me durvyāhṛtṃ kiñcinnāpi me duranuṣṭhitam| lakṣmaṇo rāghavabhrātā kruddhḥ kimiti cintaye4.32.3||
Translation
मे of me, किञ्चित् a little, न दुर्व्याहृतम् not uttered any harsh or arrogant word, मे of me, अपि दुरनुष्ठितम् indeed no wrong deed is done, राघव भ्राता Rama's brother, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, किम् why, क्रुद्धः angry, इति this, चिन्तये I am thinking.
Meaning
'Indeed I have not uttered any harsh word or done anything wrong. I, therefore, wonder why Rama's brother, Lakshmana is angry with me?
अत्र now, सर्वैरेव by all of you, तावत् in the mean while, यथा बुद्धि using your intellect , यथाविधि duly, भावस्य your own, निश्चयः decision, तावत् that much, निपुणम् expertise, शनैः slowly, विज्ञेयः inform.
Meaning
'In the meanwhile, (right now) all of you should think quietly and try to know the reason (for Lakshmana's anger), using your intellect and expertise logically and decide( the course of action).
na khalvasti mama trāso lakṣmaṇānnāpi rāghavāt| mitrṃ tvasthānakupitṃ janayatyeva sambhramam4.32.6||
Translation
मम my, लक्ष्मणात् from Lakshmana, त्रासः fear, नास्ति खलु not expected, राघवादपि even from Rama, न not, अस्थानकोपितम् enraged without reason, मित्रम् friend, सम्भ्रमम् misgivings, जनयत्येव will create.
Meaning
'I have no fear either from Lakshmana or from Rama. However, when a friend is enraged without reason, it creates misgivings.
सर्वथा always, मित्रम् friend, सुकरम् easy, परिपालनम् to maintain friendship, दुष्करम् is difficult, चित्तानाम् of mind, अल्पेऽपि even on flimsy ground, प्रीतिः friendship, अनित्यत्वात् fickleness, भिद्यते will break.
Meaning
'It is easy to earn a friend but keeping the friendship sustained is difficult. Due to fickleness of mind friendship gets broken even on flimsy grounds.
ato nimittṃ trastohṃ rāmeṇa tu mahātmanā| yanmayopakṛtṃ śakyṃ pratikartuṃ na tanmayā4.32.8||
Translation
अतः निमित्तम् therefore, for that reason, अहम् I am, महात्मना by the noble sire, रामेण by Rama, त्रस्तः am apprehensive, मम me, यत् whatever, उपकृतम् has been done, तत् that, मया me, प्रतिकर्तुम् to return, न शक्यम् not able to.
Meaning
'Therefore, I am apprehensive of Rama. I am not able to repay the help he has rendered to me'.
सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, एवम् in that way, उक्तस्तु been said, हरिपुङ्गवः best of monkeys, हनुमान् Hanuman, वानरमन्त्रिणाम् among monkeys ministers, मध्य in the midst, स्वेन by his own, तर्केण logic, उवाच said these words.
Meaning
When Sugriva spoke thus, Hanuman the great monkey, submitted in the presnce of the monkeyministers, applying his own logic:
sarvathā naitadāścaryṃ yastvṃ harigaṇeśvara| na vismarasi susnigdhamupakāra kṛtṃ śubham4.32.10||
Translation
हरिगणेश्वर chief of the vanara clan, त्वम् to you, सुस्निग्धम् with utmost sense of friendship, कृतम् done, शुभम् good, न विस्मरसि इति यत् forgetting like this, एतत् this way, सर्वथा always, आश्चर्यम् surprise, न no.
Meaning
'It is not at all a matter of surprise, O king of vanara clan, that you forgot the good service rendered to you with utmost sense of friendship.
rāghaveṇa tu vīreṇa bhayamutsṛjya dūratḥ| tvatpriyārthṃ hato vālī śakratulyaparākramḥ4.32.11||
Translation
वीरेण by the distinguished hero, राघवेण by Rama, भयम् fear, दूरतः driving away, उत्सृज्य putting aside, त्वत्प्रियार्थम् for your happiness, शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः valour equal to that of Indra, वाली Vali, हतः killed.
Meaning
'To remove your fear and to please you, the great hero Rama has killed Vali, an equal to Indra in valour.
राघवः Rama, सर्वथा ever, प्रणयात् due to love, क्रुद्धः enraged, अत्र here, संशयः doubt, न no, भ्रातरम् his brother, लक्ष्मिवर्धनम् a bestower of prosperity, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, (सं) प्रहितवान् sent.
Meaning
'Rama's anger is purely out of love for you. He has sent Lakshmana, a bestower of prosperity to you. There is no doubt about it.

Translation
कालविदाम् among the knowers of time, वर best, त्वम् you are, प्रमत्तः not alert, कालम् time, न जानीषे you are not aware, फुल्लसप्तच्छदश्यामा a lush green season with blossoming saptachada flowers, शिवा (शुभा) auspicious, शरत् autumn, प्रवृत्ता has set in.
Meaning
'You knows best the passage of time (changing seasons). But you are not aware out of inattention that the auspicious autumn has set in, making the garden lush green with blossoms of Saptachada flowers.
प्रनष्टवलाहका with disappearance of clouds, द्यौः sky, निर्मलग्रहनक्षत्रा with clear appearance of planets and constellations, सर्वाः all, दिशः directions, सरितश्च rivers, सरांसि च and tanks, प्रसन्नाः pleasant.
Meaning
'The sky from which the dark clouds have completely disappeared is illumined with planets and stars. The rivers and tanks as well as all directions are pleasant.
prāptamudyogakālṃ tu nāvaiṣi haripuṅgava| tvṃ pramatta iti vyaktṃ lakṣmaṇo'yamihāgatḥ4.32.15||
Translation
हरिपुङ्गव chief of monkeys, प्राप्तम् having set in, उद्योगकालम् time for making millitary endeavour, नावैषि not aware, त्वम् you, प्रमत्तः इति inattentive, अयं लक्ष्मणः this Lakshmana, इह here, आगतः has come, व्यक्तम् it is evident.

'O chief of monkeys it is time for military expeditions. Since you are intoxicated you are not aware of this, Lakshmana has come here evidently for this.
ārtasya hṛtadārasya puruṣṃ puruṣāntarāt| vacanṃ marṣaṇīyṃ te rāghavasya mahātmanḥ4.32.16||
Translation
आर्तस्य of a man in distress, हृतदारस्य of a man who is deprived of his wife, महात्मनः of a great self, राघवस्य Rama's, पुरुषान्तरात् from another man, परुषम् harsh, वचनम् words, ते for you, मर्षणीयम् should be tolerated.
Meaning
'The message sent by a man who is in distress, and is deprived of his wife should be accepted even if they are harsh since he is a great self (who has rendered you help).
kṛtāparādhasya hi te nānyatpaśyāmyahṃ kṣamam| antareṇāñjaliṃ baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt4.32.17||
Translation
अञ्जलिम् folded hands, बद्ध्वा by holding, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, प्रसादनात् अन्तरेण make him to excuse, क्षमम् to excuse, अन्यत् other than this, कृतापराधस्य for one who has missed his duty, ते you, अहम् I, न पश्यामि I do not see.
Meaning
'In these circumstances the best way is seeking apology from Lakshmana with folded hands. I do not see any way other than this.
niyuktairmantribhirvācyo hyavaśyṃ pārthivo hitam| ata eva bhayṃ tyaktvā bravīmyavadhṛtṃ vacḥ4.32.18||
Translation
नियुक्तै: appointed, मन्त्रिभिः by ministers, पार्थिवः king, अवश्यम् certainly, हितम् good, वाच्यः should advise, अतः एव therefore, भयम् fear, त्यक्त्वा giving up, अवधृतम् what I felt decidedly, वचः ब्रवीमि I am telling these words.
Meaning
'The counsellors and ministers appointed by a king should certainly give good advice, without fear. This I tell you since I have faith in my words.
abhikruddhassamartho hi cāpamudyamya rāghavḥ| sadevāsuragandharvṃ vaśe sthāpayituṃ jagat4.32.19||
Translation
अभिक्रुद्धः if angry, राघवः Rama, चापम् bow, उद्यम्य by lifting, सदेवासुरगन्धर्वम् including gods, demons and ghandarvas, जगत् world, वशे under control, स्थापयितुम् to keep, समर्थो हि able.
na sa kṣamḥ kopayituṃ yḥ prasādyḥ punarbhavet| pūrvopakārṃ smaratā kṛtajñena viśeṣatḥ4.32.20||
Translation
पूर्वोपकारम् having received help earlier, स्मरता remembering, विशेषतः more so, कृतज्ञेन by a grateful man, यः whoever, पुनः again, प्रसाद्यः deserves to be propitiated, सः he, कोपयितुम् to show anger, न क्षमः not proper.

'He who deserves propitiation, should not be offended, more so by a grateful man, remembering the help received by him earlier.
राजन् O king, सपुत्रः along with your son, ससुहृज्जनः with friends, त्वम् you, तस्य his, मूर्ध्ना with your head, प्रणम्य bow, समये by the oath, भर्तुः to husband, भार्या इव like a wife, तद्वशः subordinates, तिष्ठस्व you may stand by.
Meaning
'O king bow down your head along with your son, friends and relations and honour the oath just as a wife subordinates to the will of the husband. Stand by obediently.
na rāmarāmānujaśāsanṃ tvayā kapīndra yuktṃ manasā'pyapohitum| mano hi te jñāsyati mānuṣṃ balṃ sa rāghavasyāsya surendravarcasḥ4.32.22||
Translation
कपीन्द्र O king of monkeys, रामरामानुजशासनम् Rama's word or Lakshmana's command, त्वया by you, मनसापि even in heart, अपोहितुम् to overlook, न युक्तम् not proper, अस्य his, सराघवस्य along with Rama, सुरेन्द्रवर्चसः countenace having the lustre of Indra, मानुषम् human, बलम् strength, ते मनः your mind, ज्ञास्यति हि knows.
Meaning
'O king of monkeys It is not right for you to overlook the commands of Rama or Lakshmana even in mind. You know the superhuman virtues of Rama, particularly his valour. The two brothers are like Indra (and Upendra) in valour and might. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे द्वात्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
