Translation
वीर hero, उत्तिष्ठ उत्तिष्ठ get up, get up, त्वम् you, कस्मात् why, मम my, पादयोः feet, पतितः fallen, ते to you, अभयम् give you protection, भवेत् you be, सर्वमेव from all, अभिधीयताम् you may tell.
Meaning
"O heroic Dadhimukha, get up. Tell me why you have fallen at my feet. I give you protection from all.
sa tu viśvāsitastena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā| utthāya sumahāprājño vākyṃ dadhimukho'bravīt||5.63.3||
Translation
महात्मना great self, तेन सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, विश्वासितः given assurance, सुमहाप्राज्ञः very wise, सः दधिमुखः that Dadhimukha, उत्थाय got up, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.
Meaning
When great Sugriva gave assurance to wise Dadhimukha, he got up and said:
राजन् O king, वनम् garden, ऋक्षरजसा in Riksharaja's time, नैव निसृष्टपूर्वं हि or even before, त्वया your time, न not, वालिनापि even at the time of Vali, न not, तच्च accessible to go, वानरैः vanaras, भक्षितम् finished eating.
Meaning
"O king in your time or even before, during the time of Vali, that (Madhuvanam) was forbidden for entry. Now it has been laid waste by the trespassing vanaras.
एभिः they also, वनरक्षिभिः garden guards, प्रधर्षिताश्चैव even though resisted, वानराः vanaras, इमान् them, अचिन्तयित्वा not cared for, मधूनि honey, भक्षयन्ति finished eating, पिबन्ति च and drinking.
Meaning
"Even though the garden guards forcibly tried to prevent them they did not care and have devoured all the honey.
śiṣṭamatrāpavidhyanti bhakṣayanti tathāpare| nivāryamāṇāste sarve bhruvo vai darśayanti hi||5.63.6||
Translation
शिष्टम् left over, अत्र there, अपविध्यन्ति thrown off, तथा similarly, अपरे others, भक्षयन्ति eating, ते सर्वे all, निवार्यमाणाः when we prevented, भ्रुवः eyebrows, दर्शयन्ति च raising to show (a sign of arrogance)
Meaning
"Some have thrown off the leftovers, when others were prevented from drinking off the honey, they raised their eyebrows (to show their grouch).
pāṇibhirnihatāḥ kecitkecijjānubhirāhatāḥ| prakṛṣṭāśca yathākāmṃ devamārgṃ ca darśitāḥ||5.63.9||

केचित् some, पाणिभिः with the hands, निहताः struck, केचित् some, जानुभिः on the knees, आहताः beaten, यथाकामम् as they liked, प्रकृष्टाः dragged, देवमार्गम् private parts, दर्शिताः च showed.
Meaning
"Some were struck with hands, some beaten on their knees and were dragged as they liked and showed up their private parts.
त्वयि you, भर्तरि when you are the king, तिष्ठति staying, एते these, शूराः heroes, एवम् in that way, हताः striking, तैः they, कृत्स्नम् on the earth, मधुवनं चैव Madhuvanam aslo, प्रकामम् at their will, प्रभक्ष्यते eating so.
Meaning
These heroes struck that way devoured the Madhuvanam on the earth at their will and devoured the honey even when you are there as king.
एवम् in that way, विज्ञाप्यमानम् having appealed, वानरर्षभम् bulls among vanaras, तं सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, परवीरहा killer of enemies, महाप्राज्ञः very learned, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अपृच्छत् enquired.
Meaning
While Dadhimukha appealed thus to wise Sugriva, Lakshmana the killer of enemies happened to see them and enquired:
राजन् O king, वनप: protector of the garden, अयं वानरः this vanara, किम् why, प्रत्युपस्थितः came here?, दुःखितः sad, कम् why, अर्थम् for what, अभिनिर्दिश्य what is he telling, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.
Meaning
"O king why has this protector of the garden come here? Why is he sad? What is he narrating, asked Lakshmana.
महात्मना great prince, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, वाक्यविशारदः proficient in speech, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied.
Meaning
Great prince Lakshmana thus said, Sugriva the proficient speaker replied:
आर्य O venerable one, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, वीरः hero, कपिः monkey, दधिमुखः Dadhimukha, सम्प्राह to search, दक्षिणाम् southern, आशाम् hope, विचित्य having searched, आगतैः have come, हरिपुङ्गवैः monkey leaders, वीरैः heroic ones, अङ्गदप्रमुखैः Angada and others, वानरैः vanaras, मधु honey, भक्षितम् eaten.
Meaning
'O venerable Lakshmana Dadhimukha as complaining that the fruits and honey have been consumed by the vanara heroes, Angada and others who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction.

"Those vanaras having entered Madhuvanam and broken the trees are quite right. Had they not accomplished their purpose they would not have indulged themselves that way.

"If they have trespassed into the garden that way, they might have done their duty. No doubt, Hanuman alone among them might have seen Sita.

अस्य कर्मणः that duty, साधने capacity, हनूमतः Hanuman, अन्यः others, हेतुः the reason being, न हि not indeed, कार्यसिद्धि: capacity to accomplish, मतिश्चैव even wisdom, व्यवसायश्च even strenuous effort, वीर्यं च and virility, श्रुतं चापि enthusiasm, तस्मिन् for him, वानरपुङ्गवे to only the foremost of the monkys, प्रतिष्ठितम् are wellestablished.

"Hanuman alone has the ability to do it, the reason being he has the capacity the wisdom, streneous effort, virility and enthusiasm to accomplish it. These attributes are wellestablished in him.
jāmbavānyatra netā syādaṅgadaśca mahābalḥ||5.63.19|| hanumāṃścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiranyathā|
Translation
यत्र where, जाम्बवान् Jambavan, नेता is the leader, स्यात् remains, महाबलः strong, अङ्गदश्च Angada also, हनुमांश्च and Hanuman, अधिष्ठाता directing, तस्य that, गतिः will be done, अन्यथा otherwise, न not.
Meaning
Where Jambavan, Angada and Hanuman are leaders directing the task of the army it must have been accomplished.
अङ्गदप्रमुखैः Angada and other leaders, वीरैः heroes, मधुवनम् Madhuvanam, हतं किल destroyed the garden, सहिताः along with others, वारयन्तः च when they were obstructed, तदा then, जानुभिः knees, आहताः beaten.
नाम्ना named, दधिमुखो नाम Dadhimukha, प्रख्यातविक्रमः known for his valour, हरिः monkey, एतदर्थम् on account of it, वक्तुम् to tell, मधुरवाक् sweet tongued, इह here, प्राप्तः came.

"Here is Dadhimukha, a vanara, known for his valour and sweet tongue. He came here this incident to tell.
महाबाहो strongarmed, सौमित्रे O Saumitri, सीता Sita, दृष्टा would have seen, तत्त्वतः truly, पश्य seen, तथा so, वानराः vanaras, सर्वे all, अभिगम्य having arrived, मधु honey, पिबन्ति drank.
Meaning
"O strongarmed Saumitri the Vanaras must have seen Sita. Or else, they would not have arrived to drink honey.
na cāpyadṛṣṭvā vaidehīṃ viśrutāḥ puruṣarṣabha||5.63.23|| vanṃ dattavarṃ divyṃ dharṣayeyurvanaukasḥ|
Translation
पुरुषर्षभ bull among men, विश्रुताः renowned, वनौकसः forestdwellers, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अदृष्ट्वा not seen, दत्तवरम् that which was given as boon, दिव्यम् wonderful, वनम् garden, न धर्षयेयुः entered.
Meaning
"If the renowned vanaras had not seen Vaidehi, they would not have entered the wonderful garden granted as boon (by Brahma).
सुग्रीवः one with beautiful neck, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, दधिमुखस्य Dadhimukha's, इदम् thus, श्रुत्वा having heard, सम्प्रहृष्य च very glad, पुनः again, वनपालम् protector of the garden, वाक्यम् these words, प्रत्यभाषत replied.
Meaning
Beautifulnecked Sugriva heard Dadhimukha, the protector of the garden, felt very glad and replied:
कृतकर्मभिः having performed the duty, तैः they, वनम् garden, यत् भुक्तम् for drinking that honey, सः अहम् I, प्रीतः अस्मि I am pleased, कृतकर्मणाम् having accomplished the task, मर्षणीयम् are to be excused, चेष्टितम् their behaviour, मर्षितम् excused.
Meaning
"They went to the garden to drink only after having performed their duty. I am glad about it. Since they have accomplished the purpose, they are to be excused for their behaviour. I have pardoned them.
icchāmi śīghrṃ hanumatpradhānān śākhāmṛgāṃstān mṛgarājadarpān| draṣṭuṃ kṛtārthān saha rāghavābhyāṃ śrotuṃ ca sītādhigame prayatnam||5.63.28||
Translation
हनुमत्प्रधानान् led by Hanuman, मृगराजदर्पान् with the majesty of the lion, कृतार्थान् acomplished ones, तान् them, शाखामृगान् vanaras (who live on trees), राघवाभ्यां सह Rama and others, द्रष्टुम् to see, सीताधिगमेन to see Sita, प्रयत्नम् endeavour, श्रोतुं च to hear, इच्छामि desiring.
सः he (Sugriva), वानराणां राजा king of vanaras, प्रीतिस्फीताक्षौ eyes filled with joy, सम्प्रहृष्टौ very happy, सिद्धार्धौ accomplished, कुमारौ young, दृष्ट्वा seeing, संहृष्टैः very glad, अङ्गैः limbs of the body, कर्मसिद्धिम् task has been accomplished, बाह्वोः shoulders, आसन्नाम् time has come, विदित्वा recognising, अतिमात्रम् highly, ननन्द delighted.

"Beholding young Rama and Lakshmana extremely delighted, their eyes filled with joy out of fulfilment of the purpose, Sugriva who was also highly delighted felt an auspicious thrill on his limbs and knew that good time had come. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रिषष्टितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the sixtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
