स तस्य तु महानादं श्रुत्वा वैवस्वतः प्रभुः । शत्रुं विजयिनं मेने स्वबलस्य च सङ्क्षयम् ।। 7.22.1 ।।
sa tasya tu mahānādaṃ śrutvā vaivasvataḥ prabhuḥ | śatruṃ vijayinaṃ mene svabalasya ca saṅkṣayam || 7.22.1 ||
Translation
Hearing that mighty roar of his, the lord Vaivasvata judged his enemy to be victorious and his own army destroyed.
स हि योधान्हतान्मत्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः । अब्रवीत्त्वरितं सूतं रथो ऽयमुपनीयताम् ।। 7.22.2 ।।
sa hi yodhānhatānmatvā krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ | abravīttvaritaṃ sūtaṃ ratho 'yamupanīyatām || 7.22.2 ||
Translation
For, considering his warriors slain, his eyes red with rage, he hurriedly said to his charioteer, 'Let this chariot be brought forward.'
तस्य सूतस्तदा दिव्यमुपस्थाप्य महारथम् । स्थितः स च महातेजा ह्यध्यारोहत तं रथम् । प्राशमुद्गरहस्तश्च मृत्युस्तस्याग्रतः स्थितः ।। 7.22.3 ।।
tasya sūtastadā divyamupasthāpya mahāratham | sthitaḥ sa ca mahātejā hyadhyārohata taṃ ratham | prāśamudgarahastaśca mṛtyustasyāgrataḥ sthitaḥ || 7.22.3 ||
Translation
Then his charioteer, having brought up the divine great chariot, stood ready, and that one of great splendor mounted that chariot; and Death, with a dart and a hammer in his hands, stood before him.
येन सङ्क्षिप्यते सर्वं त्रैलोक्यमिदमव्ययम् । कालदण्डस्तु पार्श्वस्थो मूर्तिमानस्य चाभवत् । यमप्रहरणं दिव्यं तेजसा ज्वलदग्निमत् ।। 7.22.4 ।।
yena saṅkṣipyate sarvaṃ trailokyamidamavyayam | kāladaṇḍastu pārśvastho mūrtimānasya cābhavat | yamapraharaṇaṃ divyaṃ tejasā jvaladagnimat || 7.22.4 ||
Translation
And the Rod of Time, by which this whole imperishable triple world is destroyed, took embodied form at his side; and the divine weapon of Yama blazed with fiery energy like flaming fire.
तस्य पार्श्वेषु निच्छिद्राः कालपाशाः प्रतिष्ठिताः ।। 7.22.5 ।।
tasya pārśveṣu nicchidrāḥ kālapāśāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ || 7.22.5 ||
Translation
At his sides were stationed the unfailing nooses of Time.
पावकस्पर्शसङ्काशः स्थितो मूर्तश्च मुद्गरः ।। 7.22.6 ।।
pāvakasparśasaṅkāśaḥ sthito mūrtaśca mudgaraḥ || 7.22.6 ||
Translation
And the hammer, resembling the touch of fire, stood there embodied in form.
ततो लोकत्रयं क्षुब्धमकम्पन्त दिवौकसः । कालं दृष्ट्वा तथा क्रुद्धं सर्वलोकभयावहम् ।। 7.22.7 ।।
tato lokatrayaṃ kṣubdhamakampanta divaukasaḥ | kālaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathā kruddhaṃ sarvalokabhayāvaham || 7.22.7 ||
Translation
Then the three worlds were thrown into turmoil and the dwellers of heaven trembled, beholding Time thus enraged, the terror of all the worlds.
ततः प्रचोदयन्सूतस्तानश्वान्रुचिरप्रभान् । प्रययौ भीमसन्नादो यत्र रक्षःपतिः स्थितः ।। 7.22.8 ।।
tataḥ pracodayansūtastānaśvānruciraprabhān | prayayau bhīmasannādo yatra rakṣaḥpatiḥ sthitaḥ || 7.22.8 ||
Translation
Then the charioteer, urging on those horses of brilliant luster, advanced with a terrible roar to where the lord of the Rakshasas stood.
मुहूर्तेन यमं ते तु हया हरिहयोपमाः । प्रापयन्मनसस्तुल्या यत्र तत्प्रस्तुतं रणम् ।। 7.22.9 ।।
muhūrtena yamaṃ te tu hayā harihayopamāḥ | prāpayanmanasastulyā yatra tatprastutaṃ raṇam || 7.22.9 ||
Translation
In a moment those horses, like the horses of Indra and swift as thought, brought Yama to where that battle was being waged.
दृष्ट्वा तथैव विकृतं रथं मृत्युसमन्वितम् । सचिवा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य सहसा विप्रदुद्रुवुः ।। 7.22.10 ।।
dṛṣṭvā tathaiva vikṛtaṃ rathaṃ mṛtyusamanvitam | sacivā rākṣasendrasya sahasā vipradudruvuḥ || 7.22.10 ||
Translation
Beholding that monstrous chariot accompanied by Death in such a form, the ministers of the lord of the Rakshasas suddenly fled in all directions.
लघुसत्त्वतया ते हि नष्टसञ्ज्ञा भयार्दिताः । नेह योद्धुं समर्थाः स्म इत्युक्त्वा प्रययुर्दिशः ।। 7.22.11 ।।
laghusattvatayā te hi naṣṭasañjñā bhayārditāḥ | neha yoddhuṃ samarthāḥ sma ityuktvā prayayurdiśaḥ || 7.22.11 ||
Translation
For, being of feeble courage, their senses lost and tormented by fear, they said, 'We are not able to fight here,' and departed in every direction.
स तु तं तादृशं दृष्ट्वा रथं लोकभयावहम् । नाक्षुभ्यत दशग्रीवो न चापि भयमाविशत् ।। 7.22.12 ।।
sa tu taṃ tādṛśaṃ dṛṣṭvā rathaṃ lokabhayāvaham | nākṣubhyata daśagrīvo na cāpi bhayamāviśat || 7.22.12 ||
Translation
But Dashagriva, beholding that chariot of such a kind, the terror of the worlds, was not agitated, nor did fear enter him.
स तु रावणमासाद्य व्यसृजच्छक्तितोमरान् । यमो मर्माणि सङ्क्रुद्धो रावणस्योपकृन्तत ।। 7.22.13 ।।
sa tu rāvaṇamāsādya vyasṛjacchaktitomarān | yamo marmāṇi saṅkruddho rāvaṇasyopakṛntata || 7.22.13 ||
Translation
And Yama, having drawn near to Ravana, hurled spears and javelins, and, greatly enraged, lacerated the vital parts of Ravana.
रावणस्तु ततः स्वस्थः शरवर्षं मुमोच ह । तस्मिन्वैवस्वतरथे तोयवर्षमिवाम्बुदः ।। 7.22.14 ।।
rāvaṇastu tataḥ svasthaḥ śaravarṣaṃ mumoca ha | tasminvaivasvatarathe toyavarṣamivāmbudaḥ || 7.22.14 ||
Translation
Then Ravana, recovering himself, loosed a shower of arrows upon that chariot of Vaivasvata, like a cloud pouring down a torrent of rain.
ततो महाशक्तिशरैः पात्यमानैर्महोरसि (पात्यमानो) । नाशक्नोत्प्रतिकर्तुं स राक्षसः शल्यपीडितः ।। 7.22.15 ।।
tato mahāśaktiśaraiḥ pātyamānairmahorasi (pātyamāno) | nāśaknotpratikartuṃ sa rākṣasaḥ śalyapīḍitaḥ || 7.22.15 ||
Translation
Then, with great spears and arrows being hurled upon his broad chest, that Rakshasa, pierced by the darts, was unable to retaliate.
एवं नानाप्रहरणैर्यमेनामित्रकर्षिणा । सप्तरात्रं कृतः सङ्ख्ये विसञ्ज्ञो विमुखो रिपुः ।। 7.22.16 ।।
evaṃ nānāpraharaṇairyamenāmitrakarṣiṇā | saptarātraṃ kṛtaḥ saṅkhye visañjño vimukho ripuḥ || 7.22.16 ||
Translation
Thus by Yama, the harasser of foes, with his various weapons, the enemy was rendered senseless and turned away in the battle for seven nights.
तदासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं यमराक्षसयोर्द्वयोः । जयमाकाङ्क्षतोर्वीर समरेष्वनिवर्तिनोः ।। 7.22.17 ।।
tadāsīttumulaṃ yuddhaṃ yamarākṣasayordvayoḥ | jayamākāṅkṣatorvīra samareṣvanivartinoḥ || 7.22.17 ||
Translation
At that time there was a tumultuous battle between those two, Yama and the Rakshasa, O hero, both desiring victory and never retreating in their encounters.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः । प्रजापतिं पुरस्कृत्य समेतास्तद्रणाजिरम् ।। 7.22.18 ।।
tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ | prajāpatiṃ puraskṛtya sametāstadraṇājiram || 7.22.18 ||
Translation
Then the gods, together with the gandharvas, the siddhas, and the supreme sages, placing the Lord of Creatures at their head, assembled at that battlefield.
संवर्त इव लोकानां क्रुध्यतोरभवत्तदा । राक्षसानां च मुख्यस्य प्रेतानामीश्वरस्य च ।। 7.22.19 ।।
saṃvarta iva lokānāṃ krudhyatorabhavattadā | rākṣasānāṃ ca mukhyasya pretānāmīśvarasya ca || 7.22.19 ||
Translation
At that time, as the two grew wrathful, there arose, like the dissolution of the worlds, the conflict between the chief of the rakshasas and the lord of the departed.
राक्षसेन्द्रो ऽपि विस्फार्य चापमिन्द्राशनिप्रभम् । निरन्तरमिवाकाशं कुर्वन्बाणांस्ततो ऽसृजत् ।। 7.22.20 ।।
rākṣasendro 'pi visphārya cāpamindrāśaniprabham | nirantaramivākāśaṃ kurvanbāṇāṃstato 'sṛjat || 7.22.20 ||
Translation
The king of the rakshasas too, drawing his bow that shone like Indra's thunderbolt, then loosed his arrows, making the sky as though without any gap.
मृत्युं चतुर्भिर्विशिखैः सूतं सप्तभिरार्दयत् । यमं शतसहस्रेण शीघ्रं मर्मस्वताडयत् ।। 7.22.21 ।।
mṛtyuṃ caturbhirviśikhaiḥ sūtaṃ saptabhirārdayat | yamaṃ śatasahasreṇa śīghraṃ marmasvatāḍayat || 7.22.21 ||
Translation
He struck Death with four sharp shafts and his charioteer with seven, and swiftly he smote Yama in his vital points with a hundred thousand arrows.
ततः क्रुद्धस्य वदनाद्यमस्य समजायत । ज्वालामाली सनिःश्वासः सधूमः कोपपावकः ।। 7.22.22 ।।
tataḥ kruddhasya vadanādyamasya samajāyata | jvālāmālī saniḥśvāsaḥ sadhūmaḥ kopapāvakaḥ || 7.22.22 ||
Translation
Then from the face of the enraged Yama there sprang up the fire of his wrath, wreathed in garlands of flame, accompanied by hissing breath and smoke.
तदाश्चर्यमथो दृष्ट्वा देवदानवसन्निधौ । प्रहर्षितौ सुसंरब्धौ मृत्युकालौ बभूवतुः ।। 7.22.23 ।।
tadāścaryamatho dṛṣṭvā devadānavasannidhau | praharṣitau susaṃrabdhau mṛtyukālau babhūvatuḥ || 7.22.23 ||
Translation
Beholding that marvel in the presence of the gods and the danavas, both Mrityu and Kala became delighted and greatly excited.
ततो मृत्युः क्रुद्धतरो वैवस्वतमभाषत । मुञ्च मां समरे यावद्धन्मीमं पापराक्षसम् । नैषा रक्षो भवेदद्य मर्यादा हि निसर्गतः ।। 7.22.24 ।।
tato mṛtyuḥ kruddhataro vaivasvatamabhāṣata | muñca māṃ samare yāvaddhanmīmaṃ pāparākṣasam | naiṣā rakṣo bhavedadya maryādā hi nisargataḥ || 7.22.24 ||
Translation
Then Death, growing yet more wrathful, said to the son of Vivasvat: 'Release me into battle, that I may slay this sinful rakshasa; for this rakshasa shall not survive today, since such is the bound fixed by nature.'
हिरण्यकशिपुः श्रीमान्नमुचिः शम्बरस्तथा । विसन्धिर्धूमकेतुश्च बलिर्वैरोचनो ऽपि च ।। 7.22.25 ।।
hiraṇyakaśipuḥ śrīmānnamuciḥ śambarastathā | visandhirdhūmaketuśca balirvairocano 'pi ca || 7.22.25 ||
Translation
'The glorious Hiranyakashipu, Namuchi, and likewise Shambara, Visandhi and Dhumaketu, and Bali the son of Virochana too;'
दम्भुर्दैत्यमहाराजो वृत्रो बाणस्तथैव च । राजर्षयः शास्त्रविदो गन्धर्वाः समहोरगाः ।। 7.22.26 ।।
dambhurdaityamahārājo vṛtro bāṇastathaiva ca | rājarṣayaḥ śāstravido gandharvāḥ samahoragāḥ || 7.22.26 ||
Translation
'Dambha the great king of the daityas, Vritra, and likewise Bana, the royal sages versed in the scriptures, the gandharvas together with the great serpents;'
ऋषयः पन्नगा दैत्या यक्षाश्चाप्यप्सरोगणाः । युगान्तपरिवर्ते च पृथिवी समहार्णवा ।। 7.22.27 ।।
ṛṣayaḥ pannagā daityā yakṣāścāpyapsarogaṇāḥ | yugāntaparivarte ca pṛthivī samahārṇavā || 7.22.27 ||
Translation
'the sages, the serpents, the daityas, the yakshas, and the hosts of apsarases — and at the turning of the age, when the earth together with its great oceans,'
क्षयं नीता महाराज सपर्वतसरिद्द्रुमा । एते चान्ये च बहवो बलवन्तो दुरासदाः ।। 7.22.28 ।।
kṣayaṃ nītā mahārāja saparvatasariddrumā | ete cānye ca bahavo balavanto durāsadāḥ || 7.22.28 ||
Translation
'with its mountains, rivers, and trees, is brought to destruction, O great king — these and many others, mighty and hard to assail,'
विनिपन्ना मया दृष्टाः किमुतायं निशाचरः ।। 7.22.29 ।।
vinipannā mayā dṛṣṭāḥ kimutāyaṃ niśācaraḥ || 7.22.29 ||
Translation
'once they were seen by me, I beheld them all brought to ruin; how much more then this night-stalker?'
मुञ्चं मां साधु धर्मज्ञ यावदेनं निहन्म्यहम् । नहि कश्चिन्मया दृष्टो बलवानपि जीवति ।। 7.22.30 ।।
muñcaṃ māṃ sādhu dharmajña yāvadenaṃ nihanmyaham | nahi kaścinmayā dṛṣṭo balavānapi jīvati || 7.22.30 ||
Translation
'Release me indeed, O knower of dharma, that I may slay him; for no one whom I have looked upon lives, however strong he be.'
बलं मम न खल्वेतन्मर्यादैषा निसर्गतः । स दृष्टो न मया कालं मुहुर्तमापि जीवति ।। 7.22.31 ।।
balaṃ mama na khalvetanmaryādaiṣā nisargataḥ | sa dṛṣṭo na mayā kālaṃ muhurtamāpi jīvati || 7.22.31 ||
Translation
'This is surely not merely my own strength but a rule fixed by nature: he who has been seen by me does not live even for the space of a moment.'
तस्यैवं वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजः प्रतापवान् । अब्रवीत्तत्र तं मुत्युं त्वं तिष्ठैनं निहन्म्यहम् ।। 7.22.32 ।।
tasyaivaṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmarājaḥ pratāpavān | abravīttatra taṃ mutyuṃ tvaṃ tiṣṭhainaṃ nihanmyaham || 7.22.32 ||
Translation
Hearing these words of his, the majestic King of Righteousness then said to that Death: 'You stand aside; I myself shall slay him.'
ततः संरक्तनयनः क्रुद्धो वैवस्वतः प्रभुः । कालदण्डममोघं तु तोलयामास पाणिना ।। 7.22.33 ।।
tataḥ saṃraktanayanaḥ kruddho vaivasvataḥ prabhuḥ | kāladaṇḍamamoghaṃ tu tolayāmāsa pāṇinā || 7.22.33 ||
Translation
Then the son of Vivasvat, the lord, his eyes red with rage, hefted in his hand the unfailing rod of Time.
यस्य पार्श्वेषु निखिला कालपाशाः प्रतिष्ठिताः । पावकाशनिसङ्काशो मुद्गरो मूर्तिमान्स्थितः ।। 7.22.34 ।।
yasya pārśveṣu nikhilā kālapāśāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ | pāvakāśanisaṅkāśo mudgaro mūrtimānsthitaḥ || 7.22.34 ||
Translation
At its sides all the nooses of Time were fixed, and the mace, embodied and resembling fire and the thunderbolt, stood ready.
दर्शनादेव यः प्राणान्प्राणिनामपकर्षति । किं पुनः स्पृश्यमानस्य पात्यमानस्य वा पुनः ।। 7.22.35 ।।
darśanādeva yaḥ prāṇānprāṇināmapakarṣati | kiṃ punaḥ spṛśyamānasya pātyamānasya vā punaḥ || 7.22.35 ||
Translation
It is the rod that draws out the life-breaths of living beings by its mere sight; how much more so of one who is touched by it, or of one who is struck down by it?
स ज्वालापरिवारस्तु निर्दहन्निव राक्षसम् । तेन स्पृष्टो बलवता महाप्रहरणो ऽस्फुरत् ।। 7.22.36 ।।
sa jvālāparivārastu nirdahanniva rākṣasam | tena spṛṣṭo balavatā mahāpraharaṇo 'sphurat || 7.22.36 ||
Translation
That weapon, wreathed about with flames, as though consuming the rakshasa — touched by the mighty Yama, that great weapon quivered.
ततो विदुद्रुवुः सर्वे तस्मात्रस्ता रणाजिरे । सुराश्च क्षुभिताः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा दण्डोद्यतं यमम् ।। 7.22.37 ।।
tato vidudruvuḥ sarve tasmātrastā raṇājire | surāśca kṣubhitāḥ sarve dṛṣṭvā daṇḍodyataṃ yamam || 7.22.37 ||
Translation
Then all fled away from that battlefield in terror, and all the gods too were thrown into agitation upon seeing Yama with his rod upraised.
तस्मिन्प्रहर्तुकामे तु यमे दण्डेन रावणम् । यमं पितामहः साक्षाद्दर्शयित्वेदमब्रवीत् ।। 7.22.38 ।।
tasminprahartukāme tu yame daṇḍena rāvaṇam | yamaṃ pitāmahaḥ sākṣāddarśayitvedamabravīt || 7.22.38 ||
Translation
But as Yama was on the point of striking Ravana with his rod, the Grandsire (Brahma) showed himself before Yama in person and spoke these words.
वैवस्वत महाबाहो न खल्वमितविक्रम । न हन्तव्यस्त्वया तेन दण्डेनैव निशाचरः ।। 7.22.39 ।।
vaivasvata mahābāho na khalvamitavikrama | na hantavyastvayā tena daṇḍenaiva niśācaraḥ || 7.22.39 ||
Translation
"O son of Vivasvat, O mighty-armed one of immeasurable valor, this night-ranger must surely not be slain by you with that rod."
वरः खलु मयैतस्मै दत्तस्त्रिदशपुङ्गव । स त्वया नानृतः कार्यो यन्मया व्याहृतं वचः ।। 7.22.40 ।।
varaḥ khalu mayaitasmai dattastridaśapuṅgava | sa tvayā nānṛtaḥ kāryo yanmayā vyāhṛtaṃ vacaḥ || 7.22.40 ||
Translation
"For a boon was indeed granted by me to him, O bull among the gods; that word which was uttered by me must not be made false by you."
यो हि मामनृतं कुर्याद्देवो वा मानुषो ऽपि वा । त्रैलोक्यमनृतं तेन कृतं स्यान्नात्र संशयः ।। 7.22.41 ।।
yo hi māmanṛtaṃ kuryāddevo vā mānuṣo 'pi vā | trailokyamanṛtaṃ tena kṛtaṃ syānnātra saṃśayaḥ || 7.22.41 ||
Translation
"For whoever, whether god or man, should make me false, by him the three worlds would be made false—of this there is no doubt."
क्रुद्धेन विप्रमुक्तो ऽयं निर्विशेषं प्रियाप्रिये । प्रजाः संहरते रौद्रो लोकत्रयभयावहः ।। 7.22.42 ।।
kruddhena vipramukto 'yaṃ nirviśeṣaṃ priyāpriye | prajāḥ saṃharate raudro lokatrayabhayāvahaḥ || 7.22.42 ||
Translation
"This terrible rod, released by you in anger, destroys creatures without distinction between dear and not dear, and brings terror to the three worlds."
अमोघो ह्येष सर्वेषां प्राणिनाममितप्रभः । कालदण्डो मया सृष्टः पूर्वं मृत्युपुरस्कृतः ।। 7.22.43 ।।
amogho hyeṣa sarveṣāṃ prāṇināmamitaprabhaḥ | kāladaṇḍo mayā sṛṣṭaḥ pūrvaṃ mṛtyupuraskṛtaḥ || 7.22.43 ||
Translation
"For this rod, infinite in splendor, is unfailing against all living beings; it was created by me of old as the Rod of Time, with Death set at its head."
तन्न खल्वेष ते सौम्य पात्यो रावणमूर्धनि । नह्यस्मिन्पतिते कश्चिन्मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ।। 7.22.44 ।।
tanna khalveṣa te saumya pātyo rāvaṇamūrdhani | nahyasminpatite kaścinmuhūrtamapi jīvati || 7.22.44 ||
Translation
"Therefore, gentle one, this rod must surely not be brought down by you upon Ravana's head; for once it falls upon him, no one lives even for a moment."
यदि ह्यन्मिन्निपतिते न म्रियेतैष राक्षसः । म्रियते वा दशग्रीवस्तदाप्युभयतो ऽनृतम् ।। 7.22.45 ।।
yadi hyanminnipatite na mriyetaiṣa rākṣasaḥ | mriyate vā daśagrīvastadāpyubhayato 'nṛtam || 7.22.45 ||
Translation
"For if, when it has fallen upon him, this Rakshasa should not die, or if Ravana the Ten-necked should die, then in either case there is falsehood."
तन्निवर्तय लङ्केशं द्दण्डमेतं समुद्यतम् । सत्यं च मां कुरुष्वाद्य लोकांस्त्वं यद्यवेक्षसे ।। 7.22.46 ।।
tannivartaya laṅkeśaṃ ddaṇḍametaṃ samudyatam | satyaṃ ca māṃ kuruṣvādya lokāṃstvaṃ yadyavekṣase || 7.22.46 ||
Translation
"Therefore turn back this rod raised against the Lord of Lanka, and make me truthful this day, if you have regard for the worlds."
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा प्रत्युवाच यमस्तदा । एष व्यावर्तितो दण्डः प्रभविष्णुर्हि नो भवान् ।। 7.22.47 ।।
evamuktastu dharmātmā pratyuvāca yamastadā | eṣa vyāvartito daṇḍaḥ prabhaviṣṇurhi no bhavān || 7.22.47 ||
Translation
Thus addressed, the righteous Yama then replied: "This rod is turned aside, for you are indeed our sovereign master."
किं न्विदानीं मया शक्यं कर्तुं रणगतेन हि । न मया यद्ययं शक्यो हन्तुं वरपुरस्कृतः ।। 7.22.48 ।।
kiṃ nvidānīṃ mayā śakyaṃ kartuṃ raṇagatena hi | na mayā yadyayaṃ śakyo hantuṃ varapuraskṛtaḥ || 7.22.48 ||
Translation
"What then can be done by me now, here engaged in battle, if this one, protected by the boon, cannot be slain by me?"
एष तस्मात्प्रणश्यामि दर्शनादस्य रक्षसः । इत्युक्त्वा सरथः साश्वस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।। 7.22.49 ।।
eṣa tasmātpraṇaśyāmi darśanādasya rakṣasaḥ | ityuktvā sarathaḥ sāśvastatraivāntaradhīyata || 7.22.49 ||
Translation
"Therefore I vanish from the sight of this Rakshasa." Having spoken thus, he, together with his chariot and his horses, disappeared then and there.
दशग्रीवस्तु तं जित्वा नाम विश्राव्य चात्मनः । आरुह्य पुष्पकं भूयो निष्क्रान्तो यमसादनात् ।। 7.22.50 ।।
daśagrīvastu taṃ jitvā nāma viśrāvya cātmanaḥ | āruhya puṣpakaṃ bhūyo niṣkrānto yamasādanāt || 7.22.50 ||
Translation
But the Ten-necked one, having conquered him and proclaimed his own name, mounted the Pushpaka once more and departed from the abode of Yama.
स तु वैवस्वतो देवैः सह ब्रह्मपुरोगमैः । जगाम त्रिदिवं हृष्टो नारदश्च महामुनिः ।। 7.22.51 ।।
sa tu vaivasvato devaiḥ saha brahmapurogamaiḥ | jagāma tridivaṃ hṛṣṭo nāradaśca mahāmuniḥ || 7.22.51 ||
Translation
And the son of Vivasvat (Yama), together with the gods led by Brahma, went rejoicing to heaven, as did the great sage Narada.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे द्वाविंशः सर्गः ।। 22 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe dvāviṃśaḥ sargaḥ || 22 ||
Translation
Thus ends the twenty-second sarga in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic poem composed by the sage Valmiki.
