👑 Uttara Kanda Sarga 35 66 shlokas
अपृच्छत तदा रामो दक्षिणाशाश्रमं मुनिम् । प्राञ्जलिर्विनयोपेत इदमाह वचो ऽर्थवत् ।। 7.35.1 ।।
apṛcchata tadā rāmo dakṣiṇāśāśramaṃ munim | prāñjalirvinayopeta idamāha vaco 'rthavat || 7.35.1 ||
Translation
Then Rama questioned the sage of the southern-region hermitage, and with palms joined and full of humility he spoke these meaningful words.
अतुलं बलमेतद्वै वालिनो रावणस्य च । न त्वेताभ्यां हनुमता समं त्विति मतिर्मम ।। 7.35.2 ।।
atulaṃ balametadvai vālino rāvaṇasya ca | na tvetābhyāṃ hanumatā samaṃ tviti matirmama || 7.35.2 ||
Translation
"Incomparable indeed was this strength of Vali and of Ravana; yet it is my conviction that neither of these two was equal to Hanuman."
शौर्यं दाक्ष्यं बलं धैर्यं प्राज्ञता नयसाधनम् । विक्रमश्च प्रभावश्च हनूमति कृतालयाः ।। 7.35.3 ।।
śauryaṃ dākṣyaṃ balaṃ dhairyaṃ prājñatā nayasādhanam | vikramaśca prabhāvaśca hanūmati kṛtālayāḥ || 7.35.3 ||
Translation
"Heroism, skill, strength, steadfastness, wisdom, mastery of statecraft, prowess, and majesty — all have taken up their dwelling in Hanuman."
दृष्ट्वैव सागरं वीक्ष्य सीदन्तीं कपिवाहिनीम् । समाश्वास्य महाबाहुर्योजनानां शतं प्लुतः ।। 7.35.4 ।।
dṛṣṭvaiva sāgaraṃ vīkṣya sīdantīṃ kapivāhinīm | samāśvāsya mahābāhuryojanānāṃ śataṃ plutaḥ || 7.35.4 ||
Translation
"For the moment he beheld the ocean and saw the army of apes sinking in despair, the mighty-armed one, having reassured them, leaped a hundred yojanas."
धर्षयित्वा पुरीं लङ्कां रावणान्तःपुरं तदा । दृष्ट्वा सम्भाषिता चापि सीता ह्याश्वासिता तथा ।। 7.35.5 ।।
dharṣayitvā purīṃ laṅkāṃ rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṃ tadā | dṛṣṭvā sambhāṣitā cāpi sītā hyāśvāsitā tathā || 7.35.5 ||
Translation
"Having assailed the city of Lanka and Ravana's inner apartments, he saw Sita, and conversed with her, and likewise reassured her."
सेनाग्रगा मन्त्रिसुताः किङ्करा रावणात्मजः । एते हनुमता तत्र ह्येकेन वितिपातिताः ।। 7.35.6 ।।
senāgragā mantrisutāḥ kiṅkarā rāvaṇātmajaḥ | ete hanumatā tatra hyekena vitipātitāḥ || 7.35.6 ||
Translation
"The leaders of the army, the sons of the ministers, the kinkaras, and the son of Ravana — all these were struck down there by Hanuman alone."
भूयो बन्धाद्विमुक्तेन भाषयित्वा दशाननम् । लङ्का भस्मीकृता येन पावकेनेव मेदिनी ।। 7.35.7 ।।
bhūyo bandhādvimuktena bhāṣayitvā daśānanam | laṅkā bhasmīkṛtā yena pāvakeneva medinī || 7.35.7 ||
Translation
It was by him, set free again from his bondage and having spoken his words to Ravana, that Lanka was reduced to ashes, just as the earth is consumed by fire.
न कालस्य न शक्रस्य न विष्णोर्वित्तपस्य च । कर्माणि तानि श्रूयन्ते यानि युद्धे हनूमतः ।। 7.35.8 ।।
na kālasya na śakrasya na viṣṇorvittapasya ca | karmāṇi tāni śrūyante yāni yuddhe hanūmataḥ || 7.35.8 ||
Translation
Such deeds as are heard of Hanuman in battle belong neither to Kala (Death), nor to Indra, nor to Vishnu, nor to Kubera, the lord of wealth.
एतस्य बाहुवीर्येण लङ्का सीता च लक्ष्मणः । प्राप्ता मया जयश्चैव राज्यं मित्राणि बान्धवाः ।। 7.35.9 ।।
etasya bāhuvīryeṇa laṅkā sītā ca lakṣmaṇaḥ | prāptā mayā jayaścaiva rājyaṃ mitrāṇi bāndhavāḥ || 7.35.9 ||
Translation
It was through the might of this one's arms that Lanka, Sita, and Lakshmana were gained by me, and victory too, and my kingdom, my friends, and my kinsmen.
हनूमान्यदि मे नः स्याद्वानराधिपतेः सखा । प्रवृत्तिमपि को वेत्तुं जानक्याः शक्तिमान्भवेत् ।। 7.35.10 ।।
hanūmānyadi me naḥ syādvānarādhipateḥ sakhā | pravṛttimapi ko vettuṃ jānakyāḥ śaktimānbhavet || 7.35.10 ||
Translation
If Hanuman, the friend of Sugriva the lord of the vanaras, had not been ours, who would have been able even to learn the whereabouts of Janaki?
किमर्थं वाल्यनेनैव सुग्रीवप्रियकाम्यया । तदा वैरे समुत्पन्ने न दग्धो वीरुधो यथा ।। 7.35.11 ।।
kimarthaṃ vālyanenaiva sugrīvapriyakāmyayā | tadā vaire samutpanne na dagdho vīrudho yathā || 7.35.11 ||
Translation
Why, then, out of his desire to do what was dear to Sugriva, did he not burn up Vali like a shrub at the time when the enmity arose?
नहि वेदितवान्मन्ये हनूमानात्मनो बलम् । यद्दृष्टवाञ्जीवितेष्टं क्लिश्यन्तं वानराधिपम् ।। 7.35.12 ।।
nahi veditavānmanye hanūmānātmano balam | yaddṛṣṭavāñjīviteṣṭaṃ kliśyantaṃ vānarādhipam || 7.35.12 ||
Translation
I think Hanuman did not know his own strength, in that he watched the lord of the vanaras, dear to him as life, being afflicted.
एतन्मे भगवन्सर्वं हनूमति महामतौ । विस्तरेण यथातत्त्वं कथयामरपूजित ।। 7.35.13 ।।
etanme bhagavansarvaṃ hanūmati mahāmatau | vistareṇa yathātattvaṃ kathayāmarapūjita || 7.35.13 ||
Translation
Tell me all this in full and as it truly is concerning the great-minded Hanuman, O blessed one, O you who are honored by the gods.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हेतुयुक्तमृषिस्तदा । हनूमतः समक्षं तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। 7.35.14 ।।
rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā hetuyuktamṛṣistadā | hanūmataḥ samakṣaṃ tamidaṃ vacanamabravīt || 7.35.14 ||
Translation
Having heard Raghava's reasoned words, the sage then spoke this speech in the very presence of Hanuman.
सत्यमेतद्रघुश्रेष्ठ यद्ब्रवीषि हनूमतः । न बले विद्यते तुल्यो न गतौ न मतौ परः ।। 7.35.15 ।।
satyametadraghuśreṣṭha yadbravīṣi hanūmataḥ | na bale vidyate tulyo na gatau na matau paraḥ || 7.35.15 ||
Translation
This that you say of Hanuman is true, O best of the Raghus; there is none equal to him in strength, none surpassing him in motion or in intellect.
अमोघशापैः शप्तस्तु दत्तो ऽस्य मुनिभिः पुरा । न वेत्ता हि बलं येन बली सन्निरिमर्दनः ।। 7.35.16 ।।
amoghaśāpaiḥ śaptastu datto 'sya munibhiḥ purā | na vettā hi balaṃ yena balī sannirimardanaḥ || 7.35.16 ||
Translation
He was cursed of old by the sages with curses that never fail, so that, though mighty and a crusher of foes, he does not know his own strength.
बाल्ये ऽप्येतेन यत्कर्म कृतं राम महाबल । तन्न वर्णयितुं शक्यमिति बालतया ऽ ऽस्यते ।। 7.35.17 ।।
bālye 'pyetena yatkarma kṛtaṃ rāma mahābala | tanna varṇayituṃ śakyamiti bālatayā ' 'syate || 7.35.17 ||
Translation
The deeds that he performed even in his childhood, O Rama of great strength, cannot be described; yet, because of his being but a child, they are spoken of.
यदि वा ऽस्ति त्वभिप्रायस्तच्छ्रोतुं तव राघव । समाधाय मतिं राम निशामय वदाम्यहम् ।। 7.35.18 ।।
yadi vā 'sti tvabhiprāyastacchrotuṃ tava rāghava | samādhāya matiṃ rāma niśāmaya vadāmyaham || 7.35.18 ||
Translation
And if you have a wish to hear of it, O Raghava, then compose your mind, O Rama, and listen, for I shall tell it.
सूर्यदत्तवरस्वर्णः सुमेरुर्नाम पर्वतः । यत्र राज्यं प्रशास्त्यस्य केसरी नाम वै पिता ।। 7.35.19 ।।
sūryadattavarasvarṇaḥ sumerurnāma parvataḥ | yatra rājyaṃ praśāstyasya kesarī nāma vai pitā || 7.35.19 ||
Translation
There is a mountain named Sumeru, whose gold was granted as a boon by the Sun; there one named Kesari, his father, rules the kingdom.
तस्य भार्या बभूवैषा ह्यञ्जनेति परिश्रुता । जनयामास तस्यां वै वायुरात्मजमुत्तमम् ।। 7.35.20 ।।
tasya bhāryā babhūvaiṣā hyañjaneti pariśrutā | janayāmāsa tasyāṃ vai vāyurātmajamuttamam || 7.35.20 ||
Translation
His wife was this one renowned as Anjana; and upon her the Wind-god begot this excellent son.
शालिशूकनिभाभासं प्रासूतामुं तदा ऽञ्जना । फलान्याहर्तुकामा वै निष्क्रान्ता गहनेचरा ।। 7.35.21 ।।
śāliśūkanibhābhāsaṃ prāsūtāmuṃ tadā 'ñjanā | phalānyāhartukāmā vai niṣkrāntā gahanecarā || 7.35.21 ||
Translation
Anjana, a ranger of the dense forest, then brought forth this one, who shone like the awn of a rice-grain, and went out desiring to gather fruits.
एष मातुर्वियोगाच्च क्षुधया च भृशार्दितः । रुरोद शिशुरत्यर्थं शिशुः शरवणे यथा ।। 7.35.22 ।।
eṣa māturviyogācca kṣudhayā ca bhṛśārditaḥ | ruroda śiśuratyarthaṃ śiśuḥ śaravaṇe yathā || 7.35.22 ||
Translation
Tormented sorely by separation from his mother and by hunger, this infant cried out exceedingly, like the infant born in the reed-thicket.
तदोद्यन्तं विवस्वन्तं जपापुष्पोत्करोपमम् । ददर्श फललोभाच्च ह्युत्पपात रविं प्रति ।। 7.35.23 ।।
tadodyantaṃ vivasvantaṃ japāpuṣpotkaropamam | dadarśa phalalobhācca hyutpapāta raviṃ prati || 7.35.23 ||
Translation
Then he saw the rising sun, which resembled a cluster of hibiscus flowers, and out of greed for a fruit he leapt up toward the sun.
बालार्काभिमुखो बालो बालार्क इव मूर्तिमान् । ग्रहीतुकामो बालार्कं प्लवते ऽम्बरमध्यगः ।। 7.35.24 ।।
bālārkābhimukho bālo bālārka iva mūrtimān | grahītukāmo bālārkaṃ plavate 'mbaramadhyagaḥ || 7.35.24 ||
Translation
The child, facing the young morning sun and himself like the young sun made manifest, wishing to seize the young sun, flew up into the midst of the sky.
एतस्मिन्प्लवमाने तु शिशुभावे हनूमति । देवदानवयक्षाणां विस्मयः सुमहानभूत् ।। 7.35.25 ।।
etasminplavamāne tu śiśubhāve hanūmati | devadānavayakṣāṇāṃ vismayaḥ sumahānabhūt || 7.35.25 ||
Translation
As Hanuman in his infant state was thus flying, there arose a very great astonishment among the gods, the danavas, and the yakshas.
नाप्येवं वेगवान्वायुर्गरुडो वा मनस्तथा । यथा ऽयं वायुपुत्रस्तु क्रमते ऽम्बरमुत्तमम् ।। 7.35.26 ।।
nāpyevaṃ vegavānvāyurgaruḍo vā manastathā | yathā 'yaṃ vāyuputrastu kramate 'mbaramuttamam || 7.35.26 ||
Translation
Not even the wind is so swift, nor Garuda, nor the mind, as this son of the Wind is, as he traverses the lofty sky.
यदि तावच्छिशोरस्य त्वीदृशो गतिविक्रमः । यौवनं बलमासाद्य कथं वेगो भविष्यति ।। 7.35.27 ।।
yadi tāvacchiśorasya tvīdṛśo gativikramaḥ | yauvanaṃ balamāsādya kathaṃ vego bhaviṣyati || 7.35.27 ||
Translation
If even as an infant his speed and prowess in flight are such as this, then what will his velocity become once he attains the strength of youth?
तमनुप्लवते वायुः प्लवन्तं पुत्रमात्मनः । सूर्यदाहभयाद्रक्षंस्तुषारचयशीतलः ।। 7.35.28 ।।
tamanuplavate vāyuḥ plavantaṃ putramātmanaḥ | sūryadāhabhayādrakṣaṃstuṣāracayaśītalaḥ || 7.35.28 ||
Translation
And the Wind, cool as a heap of snow, flew along behind his own son as the boy soared upward, fearing that he might be scorched by the burning heat of the sun.
बहुयोजनसाहस्रं क्रमत्येष गतोम्बरम् । पितुर्बलाच्च बाल्याच्च भास्कराभ्याशमागतः ।। 7.35.29 ।।
bahuyojanasāhasraṃ kramatyeṣa gatombaram | piturbalācca bālyācca bhāskarābhyāśamāgataḥ || 7.35.29 ||
Translation
Crossing many thousands of yojanas, this child traversed the sky, and by his father's strength and in his childishness he drew near to the sun.
शिशुरेष त्वदोषज्ञ इति मत्वा दिवाकरः । कार्यं चात्र समायत्तमित्येवं न ददाह सः ।। 7.35.30 ।।
śiśureṣa tvadoṣajña iti matvā divākaraḥ | kāryaṃ cātra samāyattamityevaṃ na dadāha saḥ || 7.35.30 ||
Translation
Thinking, "This is but a child who knows no wrong," and that some purpose was bound up in this matter, the maker of day did not burn him.
यमेव दिवसं ह्येष ग्रहीतुं भास्करं प्लुतः । तमेव दिवसं राहुर्जिघृक्षति दिवाकरम् ।। 7.35.31 ।।
yameva divasaṃ hyeṣa grahītuṃ bhāskaraṃ plutaḥ | tameva divasaṃ rāhurjighṛkṣati divākaram || 7.35.31 ||
Translation
On that very day on which this one leaped up to seize the sun, on that same day Rahu too sought to seize the maker of day.
अनेन स परामृष्टो राम सूर्यरथोपरि । अपक्रान्तस्ततस्त्रस्तो राहुश्चन्द्रार्कमर्दनः ।। 7.35.32 ।।
anena sa parāmṛṣṭo rāma sūryarathopari | apakrāntastatastrasto rāhuścandrārkamardanaḥ || 7.35.32 ||
Translation
Brushed against by this boy upon the sun's chariot, O Rama, Rahu, the crusher of the moon and the sun, then drew back in terror.
स इन्द्रभवनं गत्वा सरोषः सिंहिकासुतः । अब्रवीद्भ्रुकुटिं कृत्वा देवं देवगणैर्वृतम् ।। 7.35.33 ।।
sa indrabhavanaṃ gatvā saroṣaḥ siṃhikāsutaḥ | abravīdbhrukuṭiṃ kṛtvā devaṃ devagaṇairvṛtam || 7.35.33 ||
Translation
Going to Indra's abode, the son of Simhika, full of wrath and knitting his brow, spoke to the god who was surrounded by the host of gods.
बुभुक्षापनयं दत्त्वा चन्द्रार्कौ मम वासव । किमिदं तत्त्वया दत्तमन्यस्य बलवृत्रहन् ।। 7.35.34 ।।
bubhukṣāpanayaṃ dattvā candrārkau mama vāsava | kimidaṃ tattvayā dattamanyasya balavṛtrahan || 7.35.34 ||
Translation
"O Vasava, having granted the moon and the sun to me for the relief of my hunger, why is it that you have now given this away to another, O slayer of Bala and Vritra?
अद्याहं पर्वकाले तु जिघृक्षुः सूर्यमागतः । अथान्यो राहुरासाद्य जग्राह सहसा रविम् ।। 7.35.35 ।।
adyāhaṃ parvakāle tu jighṛkṣuḥ sūryamāgataḥ | athānyo rāhurāsādya jagrāha sahasā ravim || 7.35.35 ||
Translation
Today, at the time of the parva, I came desiring to seize the sun, but then another Rahu approached and suddenly seized the sun."
स राहोर्वचनं श्रुत्वा वासवः सम्भ्रमान्वितः । उत्पपातासनं हित्वा चोद्वहन्काञ्चनीं स्रजम् ।। 7.35.36 ।।
sa rāhorvacanaṃ śrutvā vāsavaḥ sambhramānvitaḥ | utpapātāsanaṃ hitvā codvahankāñcanīṃ srajam || 7.35.36 ||
Translation
Hearing Rahu's words, Vasava, filled with agitation, sprang up, abandoning his seat and taking up his golden garland.
ततः कैलासकूटाभं चतुर्दन्तं मदस्रवम् । शृङ्गारधारिणं प्रांशुं स्वर्णघण्टाट्टहासिनम् ।। 7.35.37 ।।
tataḥ kailāsakūṭābhaṃ caturdantaṃ madasravam | śṛṅgāradhāriṇaṃ prāṃśuṃ svarṇaghaṇṭāṭṭahāsinam || 7.35.37 ||
Translation
Then Indra mounted the lord of elephants, who was like a peak of Kailasa, four-tusked, streaming with rut, bearing splendid trappings, towering tall, and pealing with the laughter of its golden bells,
इन्द्रः करीन्द्रमारुह्य राहुं कृत्वा पुरःसरम् । प्रायाद्यत्राभवत्सूर्यः सहानेन हनूमता ।। 7.35.38 ।।
indraḥ karīndramāruhya rāhuṃ kṛtvā puraḥsaram | prāyādyatrābhavatsūryaḥ sahānena hanūmatā || 7.35.38 ||
Translation
and placing Rahu before him, he set out, together with this Hanuman, for the place where the sun was.
अथातिरभसेनागाद्राहुरुत्सृज्य वासवम् । अनेन च स वै दृष्टः प्रधावञ्छैलकूटवत् ।। 7.35.39 ।।
athātirabhasenāgādrāhurutsṛjya vāsavam | anena ca sa vai dṛṣṭaḥ pradhāvañchailakūṭavat || 7.35.39 ||
Translation
Then Rahu, leaving Vasava behind, came on with great impetuosity, and he too was seen by this one, rushing forward like the peak of a mountain.
ततः सूर्यं समुत्सृज्य राहुं फलमवेक्ष्य च । उत्पपात पुनर्व्योम ग्रहीतुं सिंहिकासुतम् ।। 7.35.40 ।।
tataḥ sūryaṃ samutsṛjya rāhuṃ phalamavekṣya ca | utpapāta punarvyoma grahītuṃ siṃhikāsutam || 7.35.40 ||
Translation
Then, abandoning the sun and regarding Rahu as a fruit, the son of the Wind sprang up again into the sky to seize him.
उत्सृज्यार्कमिमं राम प्रधावन्तं प्लवङ्गमम् । अवेक्ष्यैवं परावृत्त्य मुखशेषः पराङ्मुखः ।। 7.35.41 ।।
utsṛjyārkamimaṃ rāma pradhāvantaṃ plavaṅgamam | avekṣyaivaṃ parāvṛttya mukhaśeṣaḥ parāṅmukhaḥ || 7.35.41 ||
Translation
Abandoning the sun, O Rama, and seeing this monkey rushing toward him in this way, Rahu, who was left with only his face, turned about and fled with his face away.
इन्द्रमाशंसमानस्तु त्रातारं सिंहिकासुतः । इन्द्र इन्द्रेति संत्रासान्मुहुर्महुरभाषत ।। 7.35.42 ।।
indramāśaṃsamānastu trātāraṃ siṃhikāsutaḥ | indra indreti saṃtrāsānmuhurmahurabhāṣata || 7.35.42 ||
Translation
Then the son of Simhika, longing for Indra as his protector, in his terror cried out again and again, "Indra! Indra!"
राहोर्विक्रोशमानस्य प्रागेवालक्षितं स्वरम् । श्रुत्वेन्द्रोवाच मा भैषीरहमेनं निषूदये ।। 7.35.43 ।।
rāhorvikrośamānasya prāgevālakṣitaṃ svaram | śrutvendrovāca mā bhaiṣīrahamenaṃ niṣūdaye || 7.35.43 ||
Translation
Hearing the voice of the wailing Rahu, perceived even before he came into view, Indra said, "Do not be afraid; I shall destroy this one."
ऐरावतं ततो दृष्ट्वा महत्तदिदमित्यपि । फलं मत्वा हस्तिराजमभिदुद्राव मारुतिः ।। 7.35.44 ।।
airāvataṃ tato dṛṣṭvā mahattadidamityapi | phalaṃ matvā hastirājamabhidudrāva mārutiḥ || 7.35.44 ||
Translation
Then, seeing Airavata, and thinking, "This too is a great fruit," the son of the Wind rushed at the king of elephants.
तथास्य धावतो रूपमैरावतजिघृक्षया । मुहूर्तमभवद्घोरमिन्द्राग्न्योरिव भास्वरम् ।। 7.35.45 ।।
tathāsya dhāvato rūpamairāvatajighṛkṣayā | muhūrtamabhavadghoramindrāgnyoriva bhāsvaram || 7.35.45 ||
Translation
As he thus rushed on with the desire to seize Airavata, his form became for a moment terrible, blazing like the radiance of Indra and Agni.
एवमाधावमानं तु नातिक्रुद्धः शचीपतिः । हस्तान्तादतिमुक्तेन कुलिशेनाभ्यताडयत् ।। 7.35.46 ।।
evamādhāvamānaṃ tu nātikruddhaḥ śacīpatiḥ | hastāntādatimuktena kuliśenābhyatāḍayat || 7.35.46 ||
Translation
As he charged on in this manner, the lord of Shachi, not greatly angered, struck him with the thunderbolt hurled from his hand.
ततो गिरौ पपातैष इन्द्रवज्राभिताडितः । पतमानस्य चैतस्य वामो हनुरभज्यत ।। 7.35.47 ।।
tato girau papātaiṣa indravajrābhitāḍitaḥ | patamānasya caitasya vāmo hanurabhajyata || 7.35.47 ||
Translation
Then, struck by Indra's thunderbolt, this child fell upon the mountain, and as he was falling his left jaw was broken.
तस्मिंस्तु पतिते बाले वज्रताडनविह्वले । चुक्रोधेन्द्राय पवनः प्रजानामहिताय सः ।। 7.35.48 ।।
tasmiṃstu patite bāle vajratāḍanavihvale | cukrodhendrāya pavanaḥ prajānāmahitāya saḥ || 7.35.48 ||
Translation
When that child fell, faint and stricken by the blow of the thunderbolt, the Wind grew enraged against Indra, to the harm of all created beings.
प्रचारं स तु सङ्गृह्य प्रजास्वन्तर्गतः प्रभुः । गुहां प्रविष्टः स्वसुतं शिशुमादाय मारुतः ।। 7.35.49 ।।
pracāraṃ sa tu saṅgṛhya prajāsvantargataḥ prabhuḥ | guhāṃ praviṣṭaḥ svasutaṃ śiśumādāya mārutaḥ || 7.35.49 ||
Translation
Withdrawing his movement, the lord Maruta entered into the bodies of all creatures and, taking up his own infant son, retreated into a cavern.
विण्मूत्राशयमावृत्य प्रजानां परमार्तिकृत् । रुरोध सर्वभूतानि यथा वर्षाणि वासवः ।। 7.35.50 ।।
viṇmūtrāśayamāvṛtya prajānāṃ paramārtikṛt | rurodha sarvabhūtāni yathā varṣāṇi vāsavaḥ || 7.35.50 ||
Translation
Blocking up the receptacles of feces and urine, he caused the greatest distress to all beings and held back every living creature, just as Indra holds back the rains.
वायुप्रकोपाद्भूतानि निरुच्छ्वासानि सर्वतः । सन्धिभिर्भिद्यमानैश्च काष्ठभूतानि जज्ञिरे ।। 7.35.51 ।।
vāyuprakopādbhūtāni nirucchvāsāni sarvataḥ | sandhibhirbhidyamānaiśca kāṣṭhabhūtāni jajñire || 7.35.51 ||
Translation
Through the Wind's wrath, all beings everywhere were left without breath, and with their joints splitting apart they became as stiff as logs of wood.
निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारं निष्क्रियं धर्मवर्जितम् । वायुप्रकोपात्ऺत्रैलोक्यं निरयस्थमिवाभवत् ।। 7.35.52 ।।
niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṃ niṣkriyaṃ dharmavarjitam | vāyuprakopātऺtrailokyaṃ nirayasthamivābhavat || 7.35.52 ||
Translation
Through the Wind's wrath the three worlds, bereft of Vedic recitation and the cry of vashat, devoid of all activity and forsaken by dharma, became like a place of perdition.
ततः प्रजाः सगन्धर्वाः सदेवासुरमानुषाः । प्रजापतिं समाधावन्दुःखिताश्च सुखेच्छया ।। 7.35.53 ।।
tataḥ prajāḥ sagandharvāḥ sadevāsuramānuṣāḥ | prajāpatiṃ samādhāvanduḥkhitāśca sukhecchayā || 7.35.53 ||
Translation
Then the creatures, together with the gandharvas, the gods, the asuras, and humans, afflicted and longing for relief, ran to Prajapati.
ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयो देवा महोदरनिभोदराः । त्वया नु भगवन्सृष्टाः प्रजानाथ चतुर्विधाः ।। 7.35.54 ।।
ūcuḥ prāñjalayo devā mahodaranibhodarāḥ | tvayā nu bhagavansṛṣṭāḥ prajānātha caturvidhāḥ || 7.35.54 ||
Translation
With joined palms the gods, their bellies hollow as great caverns, spoke: 'O blessed one, O lord of creatures, by you were the four kinds of beings created.'
त्वया दत्तो ऽयमस्माकमायुषः पवनः पतिः । सो ऽस्मान्प्राणेश्वरो भूत्वा कस्मादेषो ऽद्य सत्तम ।। 7.35.55 ।।
tvayā datto 'yamasmākamāyuṣaḥ pavanaḥ patiḥ | so 'smānprāṇeśvaro bhūtvā kasmādeṣo 'dya sattama || 7.35.55 ||
Translation
'By you was this Wind, the lord of our life-breath, granted to us. He, having become the master of our vital airs, why has he today, O most virtuous one,'
रुरोध दुःखं जनयन्नन्तःपुर इव स्त्रियः । तस्मात्त्वां शरणं प्राप्ता वायुनोहता वयम् ।। 7.35.56 ।।
rurodha duḥkhaṃ janayannantaḥpura iva striyaḥ | tasmāttvāṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptā vāyunohatā vayam || 7.35.56 ||
Translation
'shut us in and given rise to suffering, like women confined within the inner apartments? Therefore we have come to you for refuge, we who are struck down by the Wind.'
एतत्प्रजानां श्रुत्वा तु प्रजानाथः प्रजापतिः । कारणादिति चोक्त्वासौ प्रजाः पुनरभाषत ।। 7.35.57 ।।
etatprajānāṃ śrutvā tu prajānāthaḥ prajāpatiḥ | kāraṇāditi coktvāsau prajāḥ punarabhāṣata || 7.35.57 ||
Translation
Having heard this from the creatures, the lord of beings, Prajapati, said, 'There is a reason for this,' and then spoke again to the creatures.
यस्मिंश्च कारणे वायुश्चुक्रोध च रुरोध च । प्रजाः शृणुध्वं तत्सर्वं श्रोतव्यं चात्मनः क्षमम् ।। 7.35.58 ।।
yasmiṃśca kāraṇe vāyuścukrodha ca rurodha ca | prajāḥ śṛṇudhvaṃ tatsarvaṃ śrotavyaṃ cātmanaḥ kṣamam || 7.35.58 ||
Translation
'The reason for which the Wind grew angry and held you back—hear it all, O creatures, for it is fitting that you yourselves should hear it.'
पुत्रस्तस्यामरेशेन इन्द्रेणाद्य निपातितः । राहोर्वचनमास्थाय ततः स कुपितो ऽनिलः ।। 7.35.59 ।।
putrastasyāmareśena indreṇādya nipātitaḥ | rāhorvacanamāsthāya tataḥ sa kupito 'nilaḥ || 7.35.59 ||
Translation
'His son has today been struck down by Indra, the lord of the immortals, who acted upon the word of Rahu; and thereupon the Wind became enraged.'
अशरीरः शरीरेषु वायुश्चरति पालयन् । शरीरं हि विना वायुं समतां याति दारुभिः ।। 7.35.60 ।।
aśarīraḥ śarīreṣu vāyuścarati pālayan | śarīraṃ hi vinā vāyuṃ samatāṃ yāti dārubhiḥ || 7.35.60 ||
Translation
'Bodiless, the Wind moves within bodies, sustaining them; for without the Wind, a body becomes equal to a piece of wood.'
वायुः प्राणः सुखं वायुर्वायुः सर्वमिदं जगत् । वायुना सम्परित्यक्तं न सुखं विन्दते जगत् ।। 7.35.61 ।।
vāyuḥ prāṇaḥ sukhaṃ vāyurvāyuḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat | vāyunā samparityaktaṃ na sukhaṃ vindate jagat || 7.35.61 ||
Translation
'The Wind is the life-breath; the Wind is happiness; the Wind is this entire world. Forsaken by the Wind, the world finds no happiness.'
अद्यैव च परित्यक्तं वायुना जगदायुषा । अद्यैव ते निरुच्छ्वासाः काष्ठकुड्योपमाः स्थिताः ।। 7.35.62 ।।
adyaiva ca parityaktaṃ vāyunā jagadāyuṣā | adyaiva te nirucchvāsāḥ kāṣṭhakuḍyopamāḥ sthitāḥ || 7.35.62 ||
Translation
'This very day the world has been forsaken by the Wind, which is its life; this very day these beings, deprived of breath, stand like logs of wood or like walls.'
तद्यामस्तत्र यत्रास्ते मारुतो रुक्प्रदो हि नः । मा विनाशं गमिष्याम अप्रसाद्यादितेः सुताः ।। 7.35.63 ।।
tadyāmastatra yatrāste māruto rukprado hi naḥ | mā vināśaṃ gamiṣyāma aprasādyāditeḥ sutāḥ || 7.35.63 ||
Translation
'Therefore let us go to where Maruta abides, he who is the giver of pain to us. Let us not, O sons of Aditi, go to ruin without first propitiating him.'
ततः प्रजाभिः सहितः प्रजापतिः सदेवगन्धर्वभुजङ्गगुह्यकैः । जगाम तत्रास्यति यत्र मारुतः सुतं सुरेन्द्राभिहतं प्रगृह्य सः ।। 7.35.64 ।।
tataḥ prajābhiḥ sahitaḥ prajāpatiḥ sadevagandharvabhujaṅgaguhyakaiḥ | jagāma tatrāsyati yatra mārutaḥ sutaṃ surendrābhihataṃ pragṛhya saḥ || 7.35.64 ||
Translation
Then Prajapati, accompanied by the creatures, together with the gods, gandharvas, serpents, and guhyakas, went there where the Wind sat holding his son, who had been struck down by Indra, the lord of the gods.
ततो ऽर्कवैश्वानरकाञ्चनप्रभं सुतं तदोत्सङ्गगतं सदागतेः । चतुर्मुखो वीक्ष्य कृपामथाकरोत्सदेवगन्धर्वर्षियक्षराक्षसैः ।। 7.35.65 ।।
tato 'rkavaiśvānarakāñcanaprabhaṃ sutaṃ tadotsaṅgagataṃ sadāgateḥ | caturmukho vīkṣya kṛpāmathākarotsadevagandharvarṣiyakṣarākṣasaiḥ || 7.35.65 ||
Translation
Then the four-faced one, beholding the son of the ever-moving Wind lying in his lap, radiant as the sun, as fire, and as gold, showed compassion, together with the gods, gandharvas, sages, yakshas, and rakshasas.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे पंचत्रिंशः सर्गः ।। 35 ।।
