ते प्रयाता महात्मानः पार्थिवास्ते प्रहृष्टवत् । गजवाजिसहस्रौघैः कम्पयन्तो वसुन्धराम् ।। 7.39.1 ।।
te prayātā mahātmānaḥ pārthivāste prahṛṣṭavat | gajavājisahasraughaiḥ kampayanto vasundharām || 7.39.1 ||
Translation
Those high-souled kings set forth in great joy, making the earth tremble beneath the floods of their thousands of elephants and horses.
अक्षौहिण्यो हि तत्रासन्राघवार्थे समुद्यताः । भरतस्याज्ञया ऽनेकाः प्रहृष्टा बलवाहनाः ।। 7.39.2 ।।
akṣauhiṇyo hi tatrāsanrāghavārthe samudyatāḥ | bharatasyājñayā 'nekāḥ prahṛṣṭā balavāhanāḥ || 7.39.2 ||
Translation
For many divisions of troops (akshauhinis), with their delighted forces and mounts, had been mustered there for Raghava's sake at Bharata's command.
ऊचुस्ते च महीपाला बलदर्पसमन्विताः । न रामरावणं युद्धे पश्यामः पुरतः स्थितम् ।। 7.39.3 ।।
ūcuste ca mahīpālā baladarpasamanvitāḥ | na rāmarāvaṇaṃ yuddhe paśyāmaḥ purataḥ sthitam || 7.39.3 ||
Translation
And those rulers of the earth, filled with pride in their strength, said: "We did not see the battle of Rama and Ravana take place before us."
भरतेन वयं पश्चात्समानीता निरर्थकम् । हता हि राक्षसाः क्षिप्रं पार्थिवैः स्युर्न संशयः ।। 7.39.4 ।।
bharatena vayaṃ paścātsamānītā nirarthakam | hatā hi rākṣasāḥ kṣipraṃ pārthivaiḥ syurna saṃśayaḥ || 7.39.4 ||
Translation
"To no purpose have we been brought along afterward by Bharata; for the Rakshasas would surely and swiftly have been slain by us kings, there is no doubt of it."
रामस्य बाहुवीर्येण रक्षिता लक्ष्मणस्य च । सुखं पारेसमुद्रस्य युध्येम विगतज्वराः ।। 7.39.5 ।।
rāmasya bāhuvīryeṇa rakṣitā lakṣmaṇasya ca | sukhaṃ pāresamudrasya yudhyema vigatajvarāḥ || 7.39.5 ||
Translation
"Guarded by the strength of Rama's arm and of Lakshmana's, we might easily and without distress have fought even beyond the ocean."
एताश्चान्याश्च राजानः कथास्तत्र सहस्रशः । कथयन्तः स्वराज्यानि जग्मुर्हर्षसमन्विताः ।। 7.39.6 ।।
etāścānyāśca rājānaḥ kathāstatra sahasraśaḥ | kathayantaḥ svarājyāni jagmurharṣasamanvitāḥ || 7.39.6 ||
Translation
Telling these and other tales by the thousands there, the kings, filled with joy, departed to their own realms.
स्वानि राज्यानि मुख्यानि ऋद्धानि मुदितानि च । समृद्धधनधान्यानि पूर्णानि वसुमन्ति च ।। 7.39.7 ।।
svāni rājyāni mukhyāni ṛddhāni muditāni ca | samṛddhadhanadhānyāni pūrṇāni vasumanti ca || 7.39.7 ||
Translation
Their own kingdoms were foremost, prosperous and joyful, abounding in wealth and grain, full and rich in treasure.
यथापुराणि ते गत्वा रत्नानि विविधान्यथ । रामस्य प्रियकामार्थमुपहारान् नृपा ददुः ।। 7.39.8 ।।
yathāpurāṇi te gatvā ratnāni vividhānyatha | rāmasya priyakāmārthamupahārān nṛpā daduḥ || 7.39.8 ||
Translation
Then, having reached their own cities, those kings sent jewels of many kinds and gifts to please Rama and gratify his desire.
अश्वान्यानानि रत्नानि हस्तिनश्च मदोत्कटान् । चन्दनानि च मुख्यानि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च ।। 7.39.9 ।।
aśvānyānāni ratnāni hastinaśca madotkaṭān | candanāni ca mukhyāni divyānyābharaṇāni ca || 7.39.9 ||
Translation
Horses, conveyances, jewels, elephants rutting with frenzy, the finest sandalwood, and divine ornaments,
मणिमुक्ताप्रवालांस्तु दास्यो रूपसमन्विताः । अजाविकांश्च विविधान् रथांस्तु विविधान्ददुः ।। 7.39.10 ।।
maṇimuktāpravālāṃstu dāsyo rūpasamanvitāḥ | ajāvikāṃśca vividhān rathāṃstu vividhāndaduḥ || 7.39.10 ||
Translation
gems, pearls, and corals, and handmaidens endowed with beauty, goats and sheep of many kinds, and chariots of various sorts they gave.
भरतो लक्ष्मणश्चैव शत्रुघ्नश्च महाबलाः । आदाय तानि रत्नानि स्वां पुरीं पुनरागताः ।। 7.39.11 ।।
bharato lakṣmaṇaścaiva śatrughnaśca mahābalāḥ | ādāya tāni ratnāni svāṃ purīṃ punarāgatāḥ || 7.39.11 ||
Translation
Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna, those mighty ones, taking those jewels, came back again to their own city.
आगम्य च पुरीं रम्यामयोध्यां पुरुषर्षभाः । तानि रत्नानि चित्राणि रामाय समुपाहरन् ।। 7.39.12 ।।
āgamya ca purīṃ ramyāmayodhyāṃ puruṣarṣabhāḥ | tāni ratnāni citrāṇi rāmāya samupāharan || 7.39.12 ||
Translation
And having reached the lovely city of Ayodhya, those bulls among men presented those wondrous jewels to Rama.
प्रतिगृह्य च तत्सर्वं रामः प्रीतिसमन्वितः । सुग्रीवाय ददौ राज्ञे महात्मा कृतकर्मणे ।। 7.39.13 ।।
pratigṛhya ca tatsarvaṃ rāmaḥ prītisamanvitaḥ | sugrīvāya dadau rājñe mahātmā kṛtakarmaṇe || 7.39.13 ||
Translation
Receiving all of it, Rama, the great-souled one, filled with affection, gave it to King Sugriva, who had accomplished the deed.
बिभीषणाय च ददौ तथान्येभ्यो ऽपि राघवः । राक्षसेभ्यः कपिभ्यश्च यैर्वृतो जयमाप्तवान् ।। 7.39.14 ।।
bibhīṣaṇāya ca dadau tathānyebhyo 'pi rāghavaḥ | rākṣasebhyaḥ kapibhyaśca yairvṛto jayamāptavān || 7.39.14 ||
Translation
And Raghava gave to Vibhishana as well, and to the others too, to the Rakshasas and the monkeys, surrounded by whom he had won the victory.
ते सर्वे रामदत्तानि रत्नानि कपिराक्षसाः । शिरोभिर्धारयामासुर्बाहुभिश्च महाबलाः ।। 7.39.15 ।।
te sarve rāmadattāni ratnāni kapirākṣasāḥ | śirobhirdhārayāmāsurbāhubhiśca mahābalāḥ || 7.39.15 ||
Translation
All those monkeys and Rakshasas, the mighty ones, bore upon their heads and in their arms the jewels given by Rama.
हनूमन्तं च नृपतिरिक्ष्वाकूणां महारथः । अङ्गदं च महाबाहुमङ्कमारोप्य वीर्यवान् ।। 7.39.16 ।।
hanūmantaṃ ca nṛpatirikṣvākūṇāṃ mahārathaḥ | aṅgadaṃ ca mahābāhumaṅkamāropya vīryavān || 7.39.16 ||
Translation
And the king of the Ikshvakus, the great chariot-warrior, the valiant one, having set Hanuman and the mighty-armed Angada upon his lap,
रामः कमलपत्राक्षः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् । अङ्गदस्ते सुपुत्रो ऽयं मन्त्री चाप्यनिलात्मजः ।। 7.39.17 ।।
rāmaḥ kamalapatrākṣaḥ sugrīvamidamabravīt | aṅgadaste suputro 'yaṃ mantrī cāpyanilātmajaḥ || 7.39.17 ||
Translation
Rama, whose eyes were like lotus petals, spoke thus to Sugriva: "This Angada is your good son, and the son of the Wind-god is your counselor."
सुग्रीवमन्त्रिते युक्तौ मम चापि हिते रतौ । अर्हतो विविधां पूजां त्वत्कृते वै हरीश्वर ।। 7.39.18 ।।
sugrīvamantrite yuktau mama cāpi hite ratau | arhato vividhāṃ pūjāṃ tvatkṛte vai harīśvara || 7.39.18 ||
Translation
"These two, devoted to Sugriva's counsel and intent likewise upon my welfare, deserve manifold honor for your sake, O lord of the monkeys."
इत्युक्त्वा व्यवमुच्याङ्गाद्भूषणानि महायशाः । स बबन्ध महार्हाणि तदाङ्गदहनूमतोः ।। 7.39.19 ।।
ityuktvā vyavamucyāṅgādbhūṣaṇāni mahāyaśāḥ | sa babandha mahārhāṇi tadāṅgadahanūmatoḥ || 7.39.19 ||
Translation
Having spoken thus, the greatly renowned one stripped the ornaments from his own body and bound those most precious jewels upon Angada and Hanuman.
आभाष्य च महावीर्यान्राघवो यूथपर्षभान् । नीलं नलं केसरिणं कुमुदं गन्धमादनम् ।। 7.39.20 ।।
ābhāṣya ca mahāvīryānrāghavo yūthaparṣabhān | nīlaṃ nalaṃ kesariṇaṃ kumudaṃ gandhamādanam || 7.39.20 ||
Translation
And Raghava addressed the mighty bulls among the troop-leaders: Nila, Nala, Kesarin, Kumuda, and Gandhamadana,
सुषेणं पनसं वीरं मैन्दं द्विविदमेव च । जाम्बवन्तं गवाक्षं च विनतं धूम्रमेव च ।। 7.39.21 ।।
suṣeṇaṃ panasaṃ vīraṃ maindaṃ dvividameva ca | jāmbavantaṃ gavākṣaṃ ca vinataṃ dhūmrameva ca || 7.39.21 ||
Translation
the valiant Sushena, Panasa, Mainda and Dvivida, Jambavan and Gavaksha, Vinata and Dhumra,
वलीमुखं प्रजङ्घं च सन्नादं च महाबलम् । दरीमुखं दधिमुखमिन्द्रजानुं च यूथपम् ।। 7.39.22 ।।
valīmukhaṃ prajaṅghaṃ ca sannādaṃ ca mahābalam | darīmukhaṃ dadhimukhamindrajānuṃ ca yūthapam || 7.39.22 ||
Translation
Valimukha and Prajangha, the mighty Sannada, Darimukha, Dadhimukha, and the troop-leader Indrajanu.
मधुरं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा नेत्राभ्यामापिबन्निव । सुहृदो मे भवन्तश्च शरीरं भ्रातरस्तथा ।। 7.39.23 ।।
madhuraṃ ślakṣṇayā vācā netrābhyāmāpibanniva | suhṛdo me bhavantaśca śarīraṃ bhrātarastathā || 7.39.23 ||
Translation
Sweetly, with gentle speech, as if drinking them in with his eyes, he said: "You are my dear friends, and like brothers, my very own body.
युष्माभिरुद्धृतश्चाहं व्यसनात्काननौकसः । धन्यो राजा च सुग्रीवो भवद्भिः सुहृदां वरैः ।। 7.39.24 ।।
yuṣmābhiruddhṛtaścāhaṃ vyasanātkānanaukasaḥ | dhanyo rājā ca sugrīvo bhavadbhiḥ suhṛdāṃ varaiḥ || 7.39.24 ||
Translation
By you I, a dweller in the forest, was lifted out of calamity; and King Sugriva too is blessed in having you, the best of friends."
एवमुक्त्वा ददौ तेभ्यो भूषणानि यथार्हतः । वज्राणि च महार्हाणि सस्वजे च नरर्षभः ।। 7.39.25 ।।
evamuktvā dadau tebhyo bhūṣaṇāni yathārhataḥ | vajrāṇi ca mahārhāṇi sasvaje ca nararṣabhaḥ || 7.39.25 ||
Translation
Having spoken thus, the bull among men gave them ornaments according to their merit and most precious diamonds, and embraced them.
ते पिबन्तः सुगन्धीनि मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः । मांसानि च सुमृष्टानि मूलानि च फलानि च ।। 7.39.26 ।।
te pibantaḥ sugandhīni madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ | māṃsāni ca sumṛṣṭāni mūlāni ca phalāni ca || 7.39.26 ||
Translation
Those honey-tawny monkeys drank fragrant meads and ate well-prepared meats, roots, and fruits.
एवं तेषां निवसतां मासः साग्रो ययौ तदा । मुहूर्तमिव ते सर्वे रामभक्त्या च मेनिरे ।। 7.39.27 ।।
evaṃ teṣāṃ nivasatāṃ māsaḥ sāgro yayau tadā | muhūrtamiva te sarve rāmabhaktyā ca menire || 7.39.27 ||
Translation
While they dwelt thus, a full month and more then passed away, yet to all of them, through their devotion to Rama, it seemed but a single moment.
रामो ऽपि रेमे तैः सार्धं वानरैः कामरूपिभिः । राक्षसैश्च महावीर्यैर्ऋक्षैश्चैव महाबलैः ।। 7.39.28 ।।
rāmo 'pi reme taiḥ sārdhaṃ vānaraiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ | rākṣasaiśca mahāvīryairṛkṣaiścaiva mahābalaiḥ || 7.39.28 ||
Translation
Rama too took his delight together with those monkeys who could change their form at will, with the rakshasas of great valor, and with the mighty bears.
एवं तेषां ययौ मासो द्वितीयः शिशिरः सुखम् । वानराणां प्रहृष्टानां राक्षसानां च सर्वशः ।। 7.39.29 ।।
evaṃ teṣāṃ yayau māso dvitīyaḥ śiśiraḥ sukham | vānarāṇāṃ prahṛṣṭānāṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ || 7.39.29 ||
Translation
Thus a second month, the cool season, passed pleasantly for them, for the delighted monkeys and the rakshasas on every side.
इक्ष्वाकुनगरे रम्ये परां प्रीतिमुपासताम् । रामस्य प्रीतिकरणैः कालस्तेषां सुखं ययौ ।। 7.39.30 ।।
ikṣvākunagare ramye parāṃ prītimupāsatām | rāmasya prītikaraṇaiḥ kālasteṣāṃ sukhaṃ yayau || 7.39.30 ||
Translation
Dwelling in the lovely city of the Ikshvakus, they enjoyed the highest delight; and through Rama's gracious attentions the time passed happily for them.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोनचत्वारिंशः सर्गः ।। 39 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe ekonacatvāriṃśaḥ sargaḥ || 39 ||
Translation
Thus ends the thirty-ninth sarga in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the sacred Ramayana, the first poem, composed by the seer Valmiki.
