श्रुत्वा किम्पुरुषोत्पत्तिं लक्ष्मणो भरतस्तदा । आश्चर्यमिति चाब्रूतामुभौ रामं जनेश्वरम् ।। 7.89.1 ।।
śrutvā kimpuruṣotpattiṃ lakṣmaṇo bharatastadā | āścaryamiti cābrūtāmubhau rāmaṃ janeśvaram || 7.89.1 ||
Translation
Having heard the account of the origin of the Kimpurushas, Lakshmana and Bharata then both said to Rama, the lord of men, "How wonderful!"
अथ रामः कथामेतां भूय एव महायशाः । कथयामास धर्मात्मा प्रजापतिसुतस्य वै ।। 7.89.2 ।।
atha rāmaḥ kathāmetāṃ bhūya eva mahāyaśāḥ | kathayāmāsa dharmātmā prajāpatisutasya vai || 7.89.2 ||
Translation
Then the illustrious and righteous-souled Rama once again recounted this story of the son of Prajapati.
सर्वास्ता विद्रुता दृष्ट्वा किन्नरीर्ऋषिसत्तमः । उवाच रूपसम्पन्नां तां स्त्रियं प्रहसन्निव ।। 7.89.3 ।।
sarvāstā vidrutā dṛṣṭvā kinnarīrṛṣisattamaḥ | uvāca rūpasampannāṃ tāṃ striyaṃ prahasanniva || 7.89.3 ||
Translation
Seeing all those Kinnari women flee away, that foremost of sages spoke, as if laughing, to the one beautiful woman among them.
सोमस्याहं सुदयितः सुतः सुरुचिरानने । भजस्व मां वरारोहे भक्त्या स्निग्धेन चक्षुषा ।। 7.89.4 ।।
somasyāhaṃ sudayitaḥ sutaḥ surucirānane | bhajasva māṃ varārohe bhaktyā snigdhena cakṣuṣā || 7.89.4 ||
Translation
"O fair-faced one, I am the dearly beloved son of Soma. Love me, O lovely-hipped lady, with devotion and with a tender eye."
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शून्ये स्वजनवर्जिते । इला सुरुचिरप्रख्यं प्रत्युवाच महाग्रहम् ।। 7.89.5 ।।
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā śūnye svajanavarjite | ilā suruciraprakhyaṃ pratyuvāca mahāgraham || 7.89.5 ||
Translation
Having heard that speech of his in that lonely spot devoid of her own people, Ila answered the great planet whose radiance resembled the lovely moon.
अहं कामचरी सौम्य तवास्मि वशवर्तिनी । प्रशाधि मां सोमसुत यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ।। 7.89.6 ।।
ahaṃ kāmacarī saumya tavāsmi vaśavartinī | praśādhi māṃ somasuta yathecchasi tathā kuru || 7.89.6 ||
Translation
"O gentle one, I move at will, and I am subject to your wishes. Command me, O son of Soma; do with me as you desire."
तस्यास्तदद्भुतप्रख्यं श्रुत्वा हर्षमुपागतः । स वै कामी सह तया रेमे चन्द्रमसः सुतः ।। 7.89.7 ।।
tasyāstadadbhutaprakhyaṃ śrutvā harṣamupāgataḥ | sa vai kāmī saha tayā reme candramasaḥ sutaḥ || 7.89.7 ||
Translation
Hearing that wondrous-seeming reply of hers, the son of the Moon was overcome with joy, and being amorous, he sported together with her.
बुधस्य माधवो मासस्तामिलां रुचिराननाम् । गतो रमयतो ऽत्यर्थं क्षणवत्तस्य कामिनः ।। 7.89.8 ।।
budhasya mādhavo māsastāmilāṃ rucirānanām | gato ramayato 'tyarthaṃ kṣaṇavattasya kāminaḥ || 7.89.8 ||
Translation
The spring month of Madhava passed for Budha, as he took exceeding delight with that lovely-faced Ila, like a single moment for that lover.
अथ मासे तु सम्पूर्णे पूर्णेन्दुसदृशाननः । प्रजापतिसुतः श्रीमाञ्छयने प्रत्यबुध्यत ।। 7.89.9 ।।
atha māse tu sampūrṇe pūrṇendusadṛśānanaḥ | prajāpatisutaḥ śrīmāñchayane pratyabudhyata || 7.89.9 ||
Translation
Then, when the month was complete, the glorious son of Prajapati, whose face resembled the full moon, awoke upon his couch.
सो ऽपश्यत्सोमजं तत्र तपन्तं सलिलाशये । ऊर्ध्वबाहुं निरालम्बं तं राजा प्रत्यभाषत ।। 7.89.10 ।।
so 'paśyatsomajaṃ tatra tapantaṃ salilāśaye | ūrdhvabāhuṃ nirālambaṃ taṃ rājā pratyabhāṣata || 7.89.10 ||
Translation
He saw there the son of Soma practicing austerity in a body of water, his arms raised aloft and unsupported; and the king addressed him.
भगवन्पर्वतं दुर्गं प्रविष्टो ऽस्मि सहानुगः । न च पश्यामि तत्सैन्यं क्व नु ते मामका गताः ।। 7.89.11 ।।
bhagavanparvataṃ durgaṃ praviṣṭo 'smi sahānugaḥ | na ca paśyāmi tatsainyaṃ kva nu te māmakā gatāḥ || 7.89.11 ||
Translation
"O blessed one, I entered this rugged mountain together with my followers, yet I do not see that army of mine. Where indeed have my men gone?"
तच्छ्रुत्वा तस्य राजर्षेर्नष्टसञ्ज्ञस्य भाषितम् । प्रत्युवाच शुभं वाक्यं सान्त्वयन्परया गिरा ।। 7.89.12 ।।
tacchrutvā tasya rājarṣernaṣṭasañjñasya bhāṣitam | pratyuvāca śubhaṃ vākyaṃ sāntvayanparayā girā || 7.89.12 ||
Translation
Hearing that speech of the royal sage, who had lost his memory, Budha replied with auspicious words, soothing him with surpassing speech.
अश्मवर्षेण महता भृत्यास्ते विनिपातिताः । त्वं चाश्रमपदे सुप्तो वातवर्षभयार्दितः ।। 7.89.13 ।।
aśmavarṣeṇa mahatā bhṛtyāste vinipātitāḥ | tvaṃ cāśramapade supto vātavarṣabhayārditaḥ || 7.89.13 ||
Translation
"Your servants were struck down by a great rain of stones, and you, tormented by fear of the wind and rain, lay asleep in this hermitage."
समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते निर्भयो विगतज्वरः । फलमूलाशनो वीर निवसेह यथासुखम् ।। 7.89.14 ।।
samāśvasihi bhadraṃ te nirbhayo vigatajvaraḥ | phalamūlāśano vīra nivaseha yathāsukham || 7.89.14 ||
Translation
"Take comfort; may it be well with you. Free from fear and rid of distress, O hero, dwell here at your ease, living on fruits and roots."
स राजा तेन वाक्येन प्रत्याश्वस्तो महामतिः । प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं दीनो भृत्यक्षयाद् भृशम् ।। 7.89.15 ।।
sa rājā tena vākyena pratyāśvasto mahāmatiḥ | pratyuvāca tato vākyaṃ dīno bhṛtyakṣayād bhṛśam || 7.89.15 ||
Translation
Reassured by those words, the king of great intellect, yet sorely grieved at the destruction of his servants, then spoke these words.
त्यक्ष्याम्यहं स्वकं राज्यं नाहं भृत्यैर्विनाकृतः । वर्तयेयं क्षणं ब्रह्मन्समनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ।। 7.89.16 ।।
tyakṣyāmyahaṃ svakaṃ rājyaṃ nāhaṃ bhṛtyairvinākṛtaḥ | vartayeyaṃ kṣaṇaṃ brahmansamanujñātumarhasi || 7.89.16 ||
Translation
"I shall renounce my own kingdom; I will not live deprived of my servants. I would tarry but a moment, O brahmin; you should grant me leave."
सुतो धर्मपरो ब्रह्मञ्ज्येष्ठो मम महायशाः । शशबिन्दुरिति ख्यातः स मे राज्यं प्रपत्स्यते ।। 7.89.17 ।।
suto dharmaparo brahmañjyeṣṭho mama mahāyaśāḥ | śaśabinduriti khyātaḥ sa me rājyaṃ prapatsyate || 7.89.17 ||
Translation
"I have an eldest son, O brahmin, devoted to dharma and of great fame, renowned by the name Shashabindu; he shall inherit my kingdom."
न हि शक्ष्याम्यहं हित्वा भृत्यदारान्सुखान्वितान् । प्रतिवक्तुं महातेजः किञ्चिदप्यशुभं वचः ।। 7.89.18 ।।
na hi śakṣyāmyahaṃ hitvā bhṛtyadārānsukhānvitān | prativaktuṃ mahātejaḥ kiñcidapyaśubhaṃ vacaḥ || 7.89.18 ||
Translation
"For I shall not be able, O greatly resplendent one, having forsaken my servants and my comfort-blessed wives, to utter even a single ill-omened word."
तथा ब्रुवति राजेन्द्रे बुधः परममद्भुतम् । सान्त्वपूर्वमथोवाच वासस्त इह रोचताम् ।। 7.89.19 ।।
tathā bruvati rājendre budhaḥ paramamadbhutam | sāntvapūrvamathovāca vāsasta iha rocatām || 7.89.19 ||
Translation
When the lord of kings spoke thus, Budha, exceedingly amazed, then said with conciliating words, "Let your dwelling here be pleasing to you."
न सन्तापस्त्वया कार्यः कार्दमेय महाबल । संवत्सरोषितस्येह कारयिष्यामि ते हितम् ।। 7.89.20 ।।
na santāpastvayā kāryaḥ kārdameya mahābala | saṃvatsaroṣitasyeha kārayiṣyāmi te hitam || 7.89.20 ||
Translation
"You should feel no grief, O mighty son of Kardama. When you have dwelt here a year, I shall bring about your welfare."
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा बुधस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः । वासाय विदधे बुद्धिं यदुक्तं ब्रह्मवादिना ।। 7.89.21 ।।
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā budhasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ | vāsāya vidadhe buddhiṃ yaduktaṃ brahmavādinā || 7.89.21 ||
Translation
Having heard those words of Budha of untiring deeds, Ila resolved to dwell there, just as had been counselled by that expounder of the sacred Veda.
मासं स स्त्री तदा भूत्वा रमयत्यनिशं शुदा । मासं पुरुषभावेन धर्मबुद्धिं चकार सः ।। 7.89.22 ।।
māsaṃ sa strī tadā bhūtvā ramayatyaniśaṃ śudā | māsaṃ puruṣabhāvena dharmabuddhiṃ cakāra saḥ || 7.89.22 ||
Translation
For one month, becoming a woman then, she sported ceaselessly with delight; and for the next month, with the nature of a man restored, he turned his mind to righteousness.
ततः सा नवमे मासि इला सोमसुतात्सुतम् । जनयामास सुश्रोणी पुरूरवसमूर्जितम् ।। 7.89.23 ।।
tataḥ sā navame māsi ilā somasutātsutam | janayāmāsa suśroṇī purūravasamūrjitam || 7.89.23 ||
Translation
Then in the ninth month that fair-hipped woman Ila gave birth, by Budha the son of Soma, to a mighty son, the powerful Pururavas.
जातमात्रं तु सुश्रोणी पितुर्हस्ते न्यवेशयत् । बुधस्य समवर्णभमिला पुत्रं महाबलम् ।। 7.89.24 ।।
jātamātraṃ tu suśroṇī piturhaste nyaveśayat | budhasya samavarṇabhamilā putraṃ mahābalam || 7.89.24 ||
Translation
As soon as he was born, the fair-hipped Ila placed in the hands of his father Budha the mighty son, who was of a complexion like Budha's own.
बुधस्तु पुरुषीभूतं स वै संवत्सरान्तरम् । कथाभी रमयामास धर्मयुक्ताभिरात्मवान् ।। 7.89.25 ।।
budhastu puruṣībhūtaṃ sa vai saṃvatsarāntaram | kathābhī ramayāmāsa dharmayuktābhirātmavān || 7.89.25 ||
Translation
And the self-possessed Budha, when that one had become a man again, delighted him for the space of a year with discourses imbued with righteousness.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोननवतितमः सर्गः ।। 89 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe ekonanavatitamaḥ sargaḥ || 89 ||
Translation
Thus ends the eighty-ninth canto in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the sacred Ramayana, the first epic poem composed by the sage Valmiki.
