Kishkindha Kanda 49.1

अथाङ्गदस्तदा सर्वान्वानरानिदमब्रवीत्। परिश्रान्तो महाप्राज्ञस्समाश्वास्य शनैर्वचः।।4.49.1।।

athāṅgadastadā sarvānvānarānidamabravīt| pariśrānto mahāprājñassamāśvāsya śanairvacḥ||4.49.1||

Translation

अथ then, परिश्रान्तः an exhausted person, महाप्राज्ञः very wise, अङ्गदः Angada, तदा then, सर्वान् all, वानरान् the vanaras, समाश्वास्य consoled, शनैः slowly, इदम् these, वचः words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Wise Angada, exhausted after the search, collected the monkeys, and consoling them, said slowly:

Kishkindha Kanda 49.2–3 (युग्मम्)

वनानि गिरयो नद्यो दुर्गाणि गहनानि च। दर्यो गिरिगुहाश्चैव विचितानि समन्ततः।।4.49.2।। तत्र तत्र सहास्माभिर्जानकी न च दृश्यते। तद्वा रक्षो हृता येन सीता सुरसुतोपमा।।4.49.3।।

vanāni girayo nadyo durgāṇi gahanāni ca| daryo giriguhāścaiva vicitāni samantatḥ||4.49.2|| tatra tatra sahāsmābhirjānakī na ca dṛśyate| tadvā rakṣo hṛtā yena sītā surasutopamā||4.49.3||

Translation

अस्माभिः by all of us, सह along with, वनानि forests, गिरयः the mountains, नद्यः the rivers, दुर्गाणि inaccessible forts, गहनानि च dense, दर्यः caves, गिरिगुहाश्चैव and the mountain ranges also, समन्ततः all over, तत्र तत्र everywhere, विचितानि searched, जानकी Janaki, न दृश्यते is not seen, तदा then, सीता Sita, हृता येन by one who has stolen, सुरसुतोपमा one who is like a goddess, रक्षः च raksha, वा or.

Meaning

'We have searched here, there, everywhere, in dense forests, hills, forts, impenetrable caverns and mountain ranges. But we could find neither Janaki who is like a goddess nor the demon who abducted her.

KK-49-4

Kishkindha Kanda 49.4

कालश्च नो महान्यातस्सुग्रीवश्चोग्रशासनः। तस्माद्भवन्तस्सहिता विचिन्वन्तु समन्ततः।।4.49.4।।

kālaśca no mahānyātassugrīvaścograśāsanḥ| tasmādbhavantassahitā vicinvantu samantatḥ||4.49.4||

Translation

नः for us, महान् long, कालः time, यातः over, सुग्रीवश्च Sugriva also, उग्रशासनः strict in administration, तस्मात् therefore, भवन्तः all of you, सहिताः together, समन्ततः all over, विचिन्वन्तु you may search for.

KK-49-5

Kishkindha Kanda 49.5

विहाय तन्द्रीं शोकं च निद्रां चैव समुत्थिताम्। विचिनुध्वं यथा सीतां पश्यामो जनकात्मजाम्।।4.49.5।।

vihāya tandrīṃ śokṃ ca nidrāṃ caiva samutthitām| vicinudhvṃ yathā sītāṃ paśyāmo janakātmajām||4.49.5||

Translation

समुत्थिताम् overpowering us, तन्द्रीं laziness, शोकं च and sorrow, निद्रां चैव even sleep, विहाय after giving up, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, सीताम् Sita, पश्यामः we will see, यथा so also, विचिनुध्वम् you may search.

Meaning

'You should keep searching on till we see Sita, Janaka's daughter, giving up laziness and sorrow and sleep that is overpowering us.

KK-49-6

Kishkindha Kanda 49.6

अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्यं च मनसश्चापराजयः। कार्यसिद्धिकराण्याहुस्तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम्।।4.49.6।।

anirvedṃ ca dākṣyṃ ca manasaścāparājayḥ| kāryasiddhikarāṇyāhustasmādetadbravīmyaham||4.49.6||

Translation

अनिर्वेदम् zeal, दाक्ष्यं च capability and, मनसः mind's, अपराजयं च robust optimism, कार्यसिद्धिकराणि conducive to success, आहुः is said, तस्मात् therefore, अहम् I am, एतत् all this, ब्रवीमि I am telling you.

Meaning

'It is said, zeal, capability, and fortitude can overcome defeat and lead to success. Therefore I am saying this.

KK-49-7

Kishkindha Kanda 49.7

अद्यापि तद्वनं दुर्गं विचिन्वन्तु वनौकसः। खेदं त्यक्त्वा पुनस्सर्वैर्वनमेतद्विचीयताम्।।4.49.7।।

adyāpi tadvanṃ durgṃ vicinvantu vanaukasḥ| khedṃ tyaktvā punassarvairvanametadvicīyatām||4.49.7||

Translation

अद्यापि even now, वनौकसः you forestdwellers, दुर्गम् difficult to enter, तत् वनम् that forest, विचिन्वन्तु search, सर्वैः by all, खेदम् grief, त्यक्ता giving up, पुनः again, वनमेव forest itself, विचीयताम् search.

Meaning

'Search this impenetrable forest even now, O you denizens of this forest Give up grief, let us all once again ransack this forest.

KK-49-8

Kishkindha Kanda 49.8

अवश्यं क्रियमाणस्य दृश्यते कर्मणः फलम्। अलं निर्वेदमागम्य न हि नो मीलनं क्षमम्।।4.49.8।।

avaśyṃ kriyamāṇasya dṛśyate karmaṇḥ phalam| alṃ nirvedamāgamya na hi no mīlanṃ kṣamam||4.49.8||

Translation

क्रियमाणस्य being carried on, कर्मणः of the deed, फलम् result, अवश्यम् certainly, दृश्यते will be seen, अलम् enough, निर्वेदम् despair, आगम्य experiencing, नः for us, मीलनम् closing eyes, न क्षमम् हि not proper.

KK-49-9

Kishkindha Kanda 49.9

सुग्रीवः कोपनो राजा तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च वानरः। भेतव्यं तस्य सततं रामस्य च महात्मनः।।4.49.9।।

sugrīvḥ kopano rājā tīkṣṇadaṇḍaśca vānarḥ| bhetavyṃ tasya satatṃ rāmasya ca mahātmanḥ||4.49.9||

Translation

वानरः monkey, राजा king, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, कोपनः an angry one, तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च severe punishment, तस्य his, महात्मनः of the great self, रामस्य च of Rama also, सततम् ever, भेतव्यम् we have to fear.

Meaning

'Sugriva, the monkey king, is wrathful and awards severe punishment. We should ever bear in mind the (purpose of the) great self, Rama.

KK-49-10

Kishkindha Kanda 49.10

हितार्थमेतदुक्तं वः क्रियतां यदि रोचते। उच्यतां वा क्षमं यन्नस्सर्वेषामेव वानराः।।4.49.10।।

hitārthametaduktṃ vḥ kriyatāṃ yadi rocate| ucyatāṃ vā kṣamṃ yannassarveṣāmeva vānarāḥ||4.49.10||

Translation

वानराः O monkeys, वः हितार्थम् for your benefit, एतत् all this, उक्तम् said, रोचते यदि if it pleases you, क्रियताम् it may be done, यत् whatever, सर्वेषामेव for all of you, क्षमम् right, नः for us, उच्यताम् you may tell.

Meaning

'I have said all this for your good. You may carry it out, if it pleases you. Speak freely if there is any other course left for all of us, O monkeys'

KK-49-11

Kishkindha Kanda 49.11

अङ्गदस्य वचश्श्रुत्वा वचनं गन्धमादनः। उवाचाव्यक्तया वाचा पिपासाश्रमखिन्नया।।4.49.11।।

aṅgadasya vacaśśrutvā vacanṃ gandhamādanḥ| uvācāvyaktayā vācā pipāsāśramakhinnayā||4.49.11||

Translation

अङ्गदस्य Angada's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा having heard, गन्धमादनः Gandhamadana, पिपासाश्रमखिन्नया worn out by thirst and exhaustion, अव्यक्तया feebly, वाचा with language, वचनम् these words, उवाच expressed.

Meaning

Having heard Angada, Gandhamadana worn out by thirst and exhaustion, replied in a feeble tone:

Kishkindha Kanda 49.12

सदृशं खलु वो वाक्यमङ्गदो यदुवाच ह। हितं चैवानुकूलं च क्रियतामस्य भाषितम्।।4.49.12।।

sadṛśṃ khalu vo vākyamaṅgado yaduvāca ha| hitṃ caivānukūlṃ ca kriyatāmasya bhāṣitam||4.49.12||

Translation

अङ्गदः Angada, यत् वाक्यम् those words, उवाच ह expressed, वः for us, सदृशं खलु appropriate too, हितं चैव good also, अनुकूलं च even favourable, अस्य his, भाषितम् utterance, क्रियताम् carry out.

Meaning

'What Angada says is appropriate, beneficial and also favourable. Carry out his command.

KK-49-13

Kishkindha Kanda 49.13

पुनर्मार्गामहै शैलान्कन्दरांश्च दरीस्तथा। काननानि च शून्यानि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च।।4.49.13।।

punarmārgāmahai śailānkandarāṃśca darīstathā| kānanāni ca śūnyāni giriprasravaṇāni ca||4.49.13||

Translation

पुनः once again, शैलान् mountains, कन्दरांश्च valleys also, तथा similarly, दरीः caverns, शून्यानि desolate places, काननानि च and forests, गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च mountain streams, मार्गामहै we will explore again.

Meaning

'Once again let us explore the mountains, caverns, forests, desolate places and mountain streams.

KK-49-14

Kishkindha Kanda 49.14

यथोद्दिष्टानि सर्वाणि सुग्रीवेण महात्मना। विचिन्वन्तु वनं सर्वे गिरिदुर्गाणि सर्वशः।।4.49.14।।

yathoddiṣṭāni sarvāṇi sugrīveṇa mahātmanā| vicinvantu vanṃ sarve giridurgāṇi sarvaśḥ||4.49.14||

Translation

सर्वे all of you, सर्वशः everywhere, महात्मना by great self, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, यथोद्दिष्टानि as pointed out, सर्वाणि all places, गिरिदुर्गाणि mountains, विचिन्वन्तु search, वनम् forest.

KK-49-15

Kishkindha Kanda 49.15

ततस्समुत्थाय पुनर्वानरास्ते महाबलाः। विन्ध्यकाननसङ्कीर्णां विचेरुर्दक्षिणां दिशम्।।4.49.15।।

tatassamutthāya punarvānarāste mahābalāḥ| vindhyakānanasaṅkīrṇāṃ vicerurdakṣiṇāṃ diśam||4.49.15||

Translation

ततः then, महाबलाः mighty, ते वानराः those monkeys, पुनः again, समुत्थाय after getting up, विन्ध्यकाननसङ्कीर्णाम् filled with forests surrounding the ranges of Vindhya, दक्षिणां दिशम् in the southern side, विचेरुः started exploring.

Meaning

Once again the monkeys rose up and started exploring the mountain ranges of Vindhya and the forests surrounding the southern side.

KK-49-16-17

Kishkindha Kanda 49.16–17 (युग्मम्)

ते शारदाभ्रप्रतिमं श्रीमद्रजतपर्वतम्। शृङ्गवन्तं दरीमन्तमधिरुह्य च वानराः।।4.49.16।। तत्र लोध्रवनं रम्यं सप्तपर्णवनानि च। व्यचिन्वंस्ते हरिवरास्सीता दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः।।4.49.17।।

te śāradābhrapratimṃ śrīmadrajataparvatam| śṛṅgavantṃ darīmantamadhiruhya ca vānarāḥ||4.49.16|| tatra lodhravanṃ ramyṃ saptaparṇavanāni ca| vyacinvṃste harivarāssītā darśanakāṅkṣiṇḥ||4.49.17||

Translation

सीतादर्शनकाङ्क्षिण: eager to see Sita, हरिवराः best of monkeys, ते वानराः those monkeys, शारदाभ्रप्रतिमम् resembling the autumn clouds, श्रीमत् rich, शृङ्गवन्तम् endowed with peaks, दरीमन्तम् with caverns, रजतपर्वतम् silver mountain, अधिरुह्य having ascended, तत्र there, रम्यम् enchanting, लोध्रवनम् Lodhra grove, सप्तपर्णवनानि च and gardens of seven leaves, व्यचिन्वंस्ते they looked out.

Meaning

Eager to find Sita, the best of monkeys climbed the silver mountain rich with peaks and caverns resembling the autumnal clouds. And looked out into the Lodhra grove and the garden of seven leaves (banara plantations).

KK-49-18

Kishkindha Kanda 49.18

तस्याग्रमधिरूढास्ते श्रान्ता विपुलविक्रमाः। न पश्यन्ति स्म वैदेहीं रामस्य महिषीं प्रियाम्।।4.49.18।।

tasyāgramadhirūḍhāste śrāntā vipulavikramāḥ| na paśyanti sma vaidehīṃ rāmasya mahiṣīṃ priyām||4.49.18||

Translation

तस्य its, अग्रम् peak, अधिरूढाः they climbed, विपुलविक्रमाः very brave ones, ते they, श्रान्ताः exhausted, रामस्य Rama's, प्रियां महिषीम् dear queen, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, न पश्यन्ति स्म did not find.

Meaning

Even after scaling up the peak, the exhausted, heroic monkeys could not find Vaidehi, the dear queen of Rama.

KK-49-19

Kishkindha Kanda 49.19

ते तु दृष्टिगतं कृत्वा तं शैलं बहुकन्दरम्। अवारोहन्त हरयो वीक्षमाणास्समन्ततः।।4.49.19।।

te tu dṛṣṭigatṃ kṛtvā tṃ śailṃ bahukandaram| avārohanta harayo vīkṣamāṇāssamantatḥ||4.49.19||

Translation

ते हरयः those monkeys, दृष्टिगतम् having seen all over, बहुकन्दरम् having many caves, तं शैलम् that mountain, कृत्वा after doing so, समन्ततः everywhere, वीक्षमाणाः while looking at, अवारोहन्त descended.

Meaning

Having looked all over the mountain and many caverns, those monkeys got down from the mountain.

KK-49-20

Kishkindha Kanda 49.20

अवरुह्य ततो भूमिं श्रान्ता विगतचेतसः। स्थित्वा मुहूर्तं तत्राथ वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रिताः।।4.49.20।।

avaruhya tato bhūmiṃ śrāntā vigatacetasḥ| sthitvā muhūrtṃ tatrātha vṛkṣamūlamupāśritāḥ||4.49.20||

Translation

ततः then, भूमिम् ground, अवरुह्य descending down, श्रान्ताः tired, विगतचेतसः dejected at heart, तत्र there, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, स्थित्वा having stood, अथ and then, वृक्षमूलम् under a tree, उपाश्रिताः lay down.

Meaning

Descending to the foothills, the exhausted monkeys became quiet. Fatigued and disheartened, they assembled under a tree, stood for a moment and then lay down.

KK-49-21

Kishkindha Kanda 49.21

ते मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्ताः किञ्चिद्भग्नपरिश्रमाः। पुनरेवोद्यताः कृत्स्नां मार्गितुं दक्षिणां दिशम्।।4.49.21।।

te muhūrtṃ samāśvastāḥ kiñcidbhagnapariśramāḥ| punarevodyatāḥ kṛtsnāṃ mārgituṃ dakṣiṇāṃ diśam||4.49.21||

Translation

ते they, मुहूर्तम् for a while, समाश्वस्ताः took rest, किञ्चित् a little, भग्नपरिश्रमाः frustrated, पुनरेव once again, कृत्स्नाम् entire, दक्षिणां दिशम् southern side, मार्गितुम् to search, उद्यताः decided.

Meaning

Resting for a while, the frustrated monkeys resumed their search throughout the southern direction.

KK-49-22

Kishkindha Kanda 49.22

हनुमत्प्रमुखास्ते तु प्रस्थिताः प्लवगर्षभाः। विन्ध्यमेवादितस्तावद्विचेरुस्ते समन्ततः।।4.49.22।।

hanumatpramukhāste tu prasthitāḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ| vindhyamevāditastāvadviceruste samantatḥ||4.49.22||

Translation

हनुमत्प्रमुखाः Hanuman being the prominent one of the group, प्लवगर्षभाः bulls among the vanaras, प्रस्थिताः started search, आदितः from the beginning, तावत् all over, विन्ध्यमेव Vindhya range itself, समन्ततः everywhere, विचेरुः roamed.

Meaning

The bulls among vanaras and Hanuman, the chief of the group again started exploring everywhere in the Vindhya range starting from the beginning. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकोनपञ्चाशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortyninth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
