शृणु राजन्महासत्व यदर्थमहमागतः । पितामहेन देवेन प्रेषितो ऽस्मि महाबल ।। 7.104.1 ।।
śṛṇu rājanmahāsatva yadarthamahamāgataḥ | pitāmahena devena preṣito 'smi mahābala || 7.104.1 ||
Translation
"Hear, O king of great strength, for what purpose I have come; I have been sent by the divine Grandfather, O mighty one."
तवाहं पूर्वसद्भावे पुत्रः परपुरञ्जय । मायासम्भावितो वीर कालः सर्वसमाहरः ।। 7.104.2 ।।
tavāhaṃ pūrvasadbhāve putraḥ parapurañjaya | māyāsambhāvito vīra kālaḥ sarvasamāharaḥ || 7.104.2 ||
Translation
"In your former state of being, O conqueror of enemy cities, I was your son, brought forth by your power of illusion, O hero — I am Time, the gatherer of all things."
पितामहश्च भगवानाह लोकपतिः प्रभुः । समयस्ते कृतः सौम्य लोकान्सम्परिरक्षितुम् ।। 7.104.3 ।।
pitāmahaśca bhagavānāha lokapatiḥ prabhuḥ | samayaste kṛtaḥ saumya lokānsamparirakṣitum || 7.104.3 ||
Translation
"And the blessed Grandfather, the lord and master of the worlds, has said: O gentle one, a compact was made by you to protect the worlds completely."
सङ्क्षिप्य हि पुरा लोकान्मायया स्वयमेव हि । महार्णवे शयानो ऽप्सु मां त्वं पूर्वमजीजनः ।। 7.104.4 ।।
saṅkṣipya hi purā lokānmāyayā svayameva hi | mahārṇave śayāno 'psu māṃ tvaṃ pūrvamajījanaḥ || 7.104.4 ||
Translation
"For long ago, having withdrawn the worlds into yourself by your own illusion, lying upon the waters in the great ocean, you first brought me into being."
भोगवन्तं ततो नागमनन्तमुदकेशयम् । मायया जनयित्वा त्वं द्वौ च सत्त्वौ महाबलौ ।। 7.104.5 ।।
bhogavantaṃ tato nāgamanantamudakeśayam | māyayā janayitvā tvaṃ dvau ca sattvau mahābalau || 7.104.5 ||
Translation
"Then, having by your illusion produced the coiled serpent Ananta who reclines upon the water, and also two beings of great strength —"
मधुं च कैटभं चैव ययोरस्थिचयैर्वृता । इयं पर्वतसम्बाधा मेदिनी चाभवन्मही ।। 7.104.6 ।।
madhuṃ ca kaiṭabhaṃ caiva yayorasthicayairvṛtā | iyaṃ parvatasambādhā medinī cābhavanmahī || 7.104.6 ||
Translation
"— Madhu and Kaitabha, with whose heaps of bones this earth, the soil thronged with mountains, came to be covered."
पद्मे दिव्ये ऽर्कसङ्काशे नाभ्यामुत्पाद्य मामपि । प्राजापत्यं त्वया कर्म मयि सर्वं निवेशितम् ।। 7.104.7 ।।
padme divye 'rkasaṅkāśe nābhyāmutpādya māmapi | prājāpatyaṃ tvayā karma mayi sarvaṃ niveśitam || 7.104.7 ||
Translation
"Having generated me too from your navel upon a divine lotus radiant as the sun, you placed in me the whole work of Prajapati, the task of creation."
सो ऽहं सन्न्यस्तभारो हि त्वामुपासे जगत्पतिम् । रक्षां विधत्स्व भूतेषु मम तेजस्करो भवान् ।। 7.104.8 ।।
so 'haṃ sannyastabhāro hi tvāmupāse jagatpatim | rakṣāṃ vidhatsva bhūteṣu mama tejaskaro bhavān || 7.104.8 ||
Translation
"And I, having laid down that burden, worship you, the lord of the universe. Ordain protection among created beings; you are the source of my splendor."
ततस्त्वमपि दुर्धर्षात्तस्माद्भावात्सनातनात् । रक्षार्थं सर्वभूतानां विष्णुत्वमुपजग्मिवान् ।। 7.104.9 ।।
tatastvamapi durdharṣāttasmādbhāvātsanātanāt | rakṣārthaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viṣṇutvamupajagmivān || 7.104.9 ||
Translation
Then you too, for the protection of all beings, took on the state of Vishnu, arising from that unassailable, eternal Being.
अदित्यां वीर्यवान्पुत्रो भ्रातऽणां वीर्यवर्धनः । समुत्पन्नेषु कृत्येषु तेषां साह्याय कल्पसे ।। 7.104.10 ।।
adityāṃ vīryavānputro bhrāta'ṇāṃ vīryavardhanaḥ | samutpanneṣu kṛtyeṣu teṣāṃ sāhyāya kalpase || 7.104.10 ||
Translation
Born of Aditi as a valiant son, the enhancer of your brothers' valor, you are fit to aid them whenever tasks arise.
स त्वं वित्रास्यमानासु प्रजासु जगतां वर । रावणस्य वधाकाङ्क्षी मानुषेषु मनो ऽदधाः ।। 7.104.11 ।।
sa tvaṃ vitrāsyamānāsu prajāsu jagatāṃ vara | rāvaṇasya vadhākāṅkṣī mānuṣeṣu mano 'dadhāḥ || 7.104.11 ||
Translation
O best of all the worlds, when living creatures were being terrified, you, desiring the slaying of Ravana, set your mind upon birth among men.
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च । कृत्वा वासस्य नियतिं स्वयमेवात्मना पुरा ।। 7.104.12 ।।
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca | kṛtvā vāsasya niyatiṃ svayamevātmanā purā || 7.104.12 ||
Translation
Of old, you yourself by your own will fixed the term of your dwelling here at ten thousand years and a further thousand years.
स त्वं मनोमयः पुत्रः पूर्णायुर्मानुषेष्विह । कालो ऽयं ते नरश्रेष्ठ समीपमुपवर्तितुम् ।। 7.104.13 ।।
sa tvaṃ manomayaḥ putraḥ pūrṇāyurmānuṣeṣviha | kālo 'yaṃ te naraśreṣṭha samīpamupavartitum || 7.104.13 ||
Translation
You, that mind-born son, have here among men reached the fullness of your lifespan; this, O best of men, is the time for you to draw near to us.
यदि भूयो महाराज प्रजा इच्छस्युपासितुम् । वस वा वीर भद्रं त एवमाह पितामहः ।। 7.104.14 ।।
yadi bhūyo mahārāja prajā icchasyupāsitum | vasa vā vīra bhadraṃ ta evamāha pitāmahaḥ || 7.104.14 ||
Translation
If, O great king, the people wish to serve you yet longer, then dwell on here, O hero, and may it be well with you. Thus spoke the Grandfather.
अथ वा विजिगीषा ते सुरलोकाय राघव । सनाथा विष्णुना देवा भवन्तु विगतज्वराः ।। 7.104.15 ।।
atha vā vijigīṣā te suralokāya rāghava | sanāthā viṣṇunā devā bhavantu vigatajvarāḥ || 7.104.15 ||
Translation
Or else, O Raghava, if you have the desire to conquer the realm of the gods, then let the gods, having Vishnu as their protector, become free from affliction.
श्रुत्वा पितामहेनोक्तं वाक्यं कालसमीरितम् । राघवः प्रहसन्वाक्यं सर्वसंहारमब्रवीत् ।। 7.104.16 ।।
śrutvā pitāmahenoktaṃ vākyaṃ kālasamīritam | rāghavaḥ prahasanvākyaṃ sarvasaṃhāramabravīt || 7.104.16 ||
Translation
Having heard the words spoken by the Grandfather, prompted by Time, Raghava, smiling, uttered words about the total dissolution of all things.
श्रुत्वा मे देवदेवस्य वाक्यं परममद्भुतम् । प्रीतिर्हि महती जाता तवागमनसम्भवा ।। 7.104.17 ।।
śrutvā me devadevasya vākyaṃ paramamadbhutam | prītirhi mahatī jātā tavāgamanasambhavā || 7.104.17 ||
Translation
Hearing the supreme, wondrous words of you, the God of gods, great indeed has been the joy that arose in me from your coming.
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां कार्यार्थं मम सम्भवः । भद्रं ते ऽस्तु गमिष्यामि यत एवाहमागतः ।। 7.104.18 ।।
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ kāryārthaṃ mama sambhavaḥ | bhadraṃ te 'stu gamiṣyāmi yata evāhamāgataḥ || 7.104.18 ||
Translation
My birth was for the sake of the affairs of all three worlds; may it be well with you—I shall go to that very place from which I came.
हद्गतो ह्यसि सम्प्राप्तो न मे तत्र विचारणा । मया हि सर्वकृत्येषु देवानां वशवर्तिनाम् । स्थातव्यं सर्वसंहार यथा ह्याह पितामहः ।। 7.104.19 ।।
hadgato hyasi samprāpto na me tatra vicāraṇā | mayā hi sarvakṛtyeṣu devānāṃ vaśavartinām | sthātavyaṃ sarvasaṃhāra yathā hyāha pitāmahaḥ || 7.104.19 ||
Translation
You have come to me, dwelling in my heart, and there is no hesitation in me about that. In all the tasks of the gods who abide under my sway I must remain present, O destroyer of all, even as the Grandfather has commanded.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे चतुरधिकशततमः सर्गः ।। 104 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe caturadhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ || 104 ||
Translation
Thus, in the sacred Ramayana of Valmiki, the first of poems, in the venerable Uttara Kanda, ends the one hundred and fourth canto.
