तथा तयोः संवदतोर्दुर्वासा भगवानृषिः । रामस्य दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी राजद्वारमुपागमत् ।। 7.105.1 ।।
tathā tayoḥ saṃvadatordurvāsā bhagavānṛṣiḥ | rāmasya darśanākāṅkṣī rājadvāramupāgamat || 7.105.1 ||
Translation
While the two were thus conversing, the venerable sage Durvasa, desiring an audience with Rama, came to the gate of the palace.
सो ऽभिगम्य तु सौमित्रिमुवाच ऋषिसत्तमः । रामं दर्शय मे शीघ्रं पुरा मे ऽर्थो ऽतिवर्तते ।। 7.105.2 ।।
so 'bhigamya tu saumitrimuvāca ṛṣisattamaḥ | rāmaṃ darśaya me śīghraṃ purā me 'rtho 'tivartate || 7.105.2 ||
Translation
Approaching Saumitri, that most excellent of sages said: "Show me Rama at once, for my errand brooks no delay."
मुनेस्तु भाषितं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा । अभिवाद्य महात्मानं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। 7.105.3 ।।
munestu bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā | abhivādya mahātmānaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.105.3 ||
Translation
Hearing the sage's words, Lakshmana, slayer of enemy heroes, paid homage to the great soul and spoke these words.
किं कार्यं ब्रूहि भगवन्को वा ऽर्थः किं करोम्यहम् । व्यग्रो हि राघवो ब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तं प्रतिपाल्यताम् ।। 7.105.4 ।।
kiṃ kāryaṃ brūhi bhagavanko vā 'rthaḥ kiṃ karomyaham | vyagro hi rāghavo brahmanmuhūrtaṃ pratipālyatām || 7.105.4 ||
Translation
"Tell me, O blessed one, what is to be done, or what is your purpose—what shall I do? Raghava is occupied, O brahmin; let him be awaited for a moment."
तच्छ्रुत्वा ऋषिशार्दूलः क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः । उवाच लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा ।। 7.105.5 ।।
tacchrutvā ṛṣiśārdūlaḥ krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ | uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ vākyaṃ nirdahanniva cakṣuṣā || 7.105.5 ||
Translation
Hearing this, the tiger among sages, his mind clouded with anger, spoke to Lakshmana as though consuming him with his eyes.
अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे रामाय प्रतिवेदय । अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे न निवेदयसे यदि ।। 7.105.6 ।।
asminkṣaṇe māṃ saumitre rāmāya prativedaya | asminkṣaṇe māṃ saumitre na nivedayase yadi || 7.105.6 ||
Translation
"This very instant, O Saumitri, announce me to Rama. If this very instant you do not announce me, O Saumitri,
विषयं त्वां पुरं चैव शपिष्ये राघवं तथा । भरतं चैव सौमित्रे युष्माकं या च सन्ततिः ।। 7.105.7 ।।
viṣayaṃ tvāṃ puraṃ caiva śapiṣye rāghavaṃ tathā | bharataṃ caiva saumitre yuṣmākaṃ yā ca santatiḥ || 7.105.7 ||
Translation
I shall curse you and the city and the realm, and Raghava as well, and Bharata too, O Saumitri, and whatever progeny is yours.
न हि शक्ष्याम्यहं भूयो मन्युं धारयितुं हृदि । तच्छ्रुत्वा घोरसङ्काशं वाक्यं तस्य महात्मनः । चिन्तयामास मनसा तस्य वाक्यस्य निश्चयम् ।। 7.105.8 ।।
na hi śakṣyāmyahaṃ bhūyo manyuṃ dhārayituṃ hṛdi | tacchrutvā ghorasaṅkāśaṃ vākyaṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ | cintayāmāsa manasā tasya vākyasya niścayam || 7.105.8 ||
Translation
For I shall be unable to hold back this wrath in my heart any longer." Hearing those dreadful-seeming words of that great soul, Lakshmana pondered in his mind the resolve behind that speech.
एकस्य मरणं मे ऽस्तु मा भूत्सर्वविनाशनम् । इति बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ।। 7.105.9 ।।
ekasya maraṇaṃ me 'stu mā bhūtsarvavināśanam | iti buddhyā viniścitya rāghavāya nyavedayat || 7.105.9 ||
Translation
"Let the death be mine alone; let there not be the destruction of all" — having thus resolved in his mind, he announced his decision to Raghava.
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः कालं विसृज्य च । निस्सृत्य त्वरितं राजा अत्रेः पुत्रं ददर्श ह ।। 7.105.10 ।।
lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ kālaṃ visṛjya ca | nissṛtya tvaritaṃ rājā atreḥ putraṃ dadarśa ha || 7.105.10 ||
Translation
Hearing the words of Lakshmana, and having dismissed Kala, King Rama swiftly went forth and beheld the son of Atri.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा । किं कार्यमिति काकुत्स्थः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।। 7.105.11 ।।
so 'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā | kiṃ kāryamiti kākutsthaḥ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata || 7.105.11 ||
Translation
Having saluted that great-souled one who blazed as it were with his splendor, Kakutstha, with joined palms, asked, "What is your purpose?"
तद्वाक्यं राघवेणोक्तं श्रुत्वा मुनिवरः प्रभुम् । प्रत्याह रामं दुर्वासाः श्रूयतां धर्मवत्सल ।। 7.105.12 ।।
tadvākyaṃ rāghaveṇoktaṃ śrutvā munivaraḥ prabhum | pratyāha rāmaṃ durvāsāḥ śrūyatāṃ dharmavatsala || 7.105.12 ||
Translation
Having heard those words spoken by Raghava, Durvasa, the best of sages, replied to Lord Rama, "Listen, O you who are devoted to dharma."
अद्य वर्षसहस्रस्य समाप्तिस्तपसो मम । सो ऽहं भोजनमिच्छामि यथासिद्धं तवानघ ।। 7.105.13 ।।
adya varṣasahasrasya samāptistapaso mama | so 'haṃ bhojanamicchāmi yathāsiddhaṃ tavānagha || 7.105.13 ||
Translation
"Today is the completion of my austerity lasting a thousand years; therefore I desire food, whatever has been prepared in your house, O sinless one."
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं राजा राघवः प्रीतमानसः । भोजनं मुनिमुख्याय यथासिद्धमुपाहरत् ।। 7.105.14 ।।
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ rājā rāghavaḥ prītamānasaḥ | bhojanaṃ munimukhyāya yathāsiddhamupāharat || 7.105.14 ||
Translation
Hearing that speech, King Raghava, with a delighted mind, brought to the foremost of sages food just as it had been prepared.
स तु भुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् । साधु रामेति सम्भाष्य स्वमाश्रममुपागमत् ।। 7.105.15 ।।
sa tu bhuktvā muniśreṣṭhastadannamamṛtopamam | sādhu rāmeti sambhāṣya svamāśramamupāgamat || 7.105.15 ||
Translation
And that best of sages, having eaten that food which was like ambrosia, said "Well done, Rama," and returned to his own hermitage.
तस्मिन् गते मुनिवरे स्वाश्रमं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः । संस्मृत्य कालवाक्यानि ततो दुःखमुपागमत् ।। 7.105.16 ।।
tasmin gate munivare svāśramaṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ | saṃsmṛtya kālavākyāni tato duḥkhamupāgamat || 7.105.16 ||
Translation
When that excellent sage had gone to his own hermitage, the elder brother of Lakshmana, recalling the words of Kala, thereupon fell into grief.
दुःखेन च सुसन्तप्तः स्मृत्वा तद्घोरदर्शनम् । अवाङ्मुखो दीनमना व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ।। 7.105.17 ।।
duḥkhena ca susantaptaḥ smṛtvā tadghoradarśanam | avāṅmukho dīnamanā vyāhartuṃ na śaśāka ha || 7.105.17 ||
Translation
Sorely tormented by grief, remembering that dreadful sight, his face downcast and his mind dejected, he was unable to speak.
ततो बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य कालवाक्यानि राघवः । नैतदस्तीति निश्चित्य तूष्णीमासीन्महायशाः ।। 7.105.18 ।।
tato buddhyā viniścitya kālavākyāni rāghavaḥ | naitadastīti niścitya tūṣṇīmāsīnmahāyaśāḥ || 7.105.18 ||
Translation
Then, having pondered the words of Kala in his mind, Raghava of great fame, concluding "This cannot be," remained silent.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे पञ्चोत्तरशततमः सर्गः ।। 105 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe pañcottaraśatatamaḥ sargaḥ || 105 ||
Translation
Thus, in the sacred and glorious Ramayana of Valmiki, the first of poems, in the glorious Uttara Kanda, the one hundred and fifth canto.
