अवाङ्मुखमथो दीनं दृष्ट्वा सोममिवाप्लुतम् । राघवं लक्ष्मणो वाक्यं हृष्टो मधुरमब्रवीत् ।। 7.106.1 ।।
avāṅmukhamatho dīnaṃ dṛṣṭvā somamivāplutam | rāghavaṃ lakṣmaṇo vākyaṃ hṛṣṭo madhuramabravīt || 7.106.1 ||
Translation
Then, seeing Raghava downcast and dejected, like the moon when it is overwhelmed by an eclipse, Lakshmana, well pleased, spoke these sweet words.
न संतापं महाबाहो मदर्थं कर्तुमर्हसि । पूर्वनिर्माणबद्धा हि कालस्य गतिरीदृशी ।। 7.106.2 ।।
na saṃtāpaṃ mahābāho madarthaṃ kartumarhasi | pūrvanirmāṇabaddhā hi kālasya gatirīdṛśī || 7.106.2 ||
Translation
"You ought not to grieve on my account, O mighty-armed one; for the course of Time, bound by what was fashioned beforehand, is of such a nature."
जहि मां सौम्य विस्रब्धं प्रतिज्ञां परिपालय । हीनप्रतिज्ञाः काकुत्स्थ प्रयान्ति नरकं नराः ।। 7.106.3 ।।
jahi māṃ saumya visrabdhaṃ pratijñāṃ paripālaya | hīnapratijñāḥ kākutstha prayānti narakaṃ narāḥ || 7.106.3 ||
Translation
"Slay me without hesitation, O gentle one, and keep your pledge; men who fail their pledges, O Kakutstha, go to hell."
यदि प्रीतिर्महाराज यद्यनुग्राह्यता मयि । जहि मां निर्विशङ्कस्त्वं धर्मं वर्धय राघव ।। 7.106.4 ।।
yadi prītirmahārāja yadyanugrāhyatā mayi | jahi māṃ nirviśaṅkastvaṃ dharmaṃ vardhaya rāghava || 7.106.4 ||
Translation
"If you have affection for me, O great king, and if I am worthy of your favor, then slay me without misgiving and increase dharma, O Raghava."
लक्ष्मणेन तथोक्तस्तु रामः प्रचलितेन्द्रियः । मन्त्रिणः समुपानीय तथैव च पुरोधसम् ।। 7.106.5 ।।
lakṣmaṇena tathoktastu rāmaḥ pracalitendriyaḥ | mantriṇaḥ samupānīya tathaiva ca purodhasam || 7.106.5 ||
Translation
Thus addressed by Lakshmana, Rama, his senses shaken, summoned his ministers and likewise the family priest.
अब्रवीच्च तदा वृत्तं तेषां मध्ये स राघवः । दुर्वासोभिगमं चैव प्रतिज्ञां तापसस्य च ।। 7.106.6 ।।
abravīcca tadā vṛttaṃ teṣāṃ madhye sa rāghavaḥ | durvāsobhigamaṃ caiva pratijñāṃ tāpasasya ca || 7.106.6 ||
Translation
And then Raghava recounted in their midst what had taken place — the coming of Durvasa and the pledge made concerning the ascetic.
तच्छ्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणः सर्वे सोपाध्यायाः समासत । वसिष्ठस्तु महातेजा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। 7.106.7 ।।
tacchrutvā mantriṇaḥ sarve sopādhyāyāḥ samāsata | vasiṣṭhastu mahātejā vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.106.7 ||
Translation
Hearing that, all the ministers together with the teachers sat down in deliberation; and Vasishtha of great splendor spoke these words.
दृष्टमेतन्महाबाहो क्षयं ते रोमहर्षणम् । लक्ष्मणेन वियोगश्च तव राम महायशः ।। 7.106.8 ।।
dṛṣṭametanmahābāho kṣayaṃ te romaharṣaṇam | lakṣmaṇena viyogaśca tava rāma mahāyaśaḥ || 7.106.8 ||
Translation
"This hair-raising destruction of yours has been foreseen, O mighty-armed one, and your separation from Lakshmana too, O Rama of great fame."
त्यजैनं बलवान्कालो मा प्रतिज्ञां वृथा कृताः । विनष्टायां प्रतिज्ञायां धर्मो ऽपि च लयं व्रजेत् ।। 7.106.9 ।।
tyajainaṃ balavānkālo mā pratijñāṃ vṛthā kṛtāḥ | vinaṣṭāyāṃ pratijñāyāṃ dharmo 'pi ca layaṃ vrajet || 7.106.9 ||
Translation
"Abandon him; Time is mighty — do not render your pledge vain; for when a pledge is destroyed, even dharma would go to dissolution."
ततो धर्मे विनष्टे तु त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् । सदेवर्षिगणं सर्वं विनश्येत्तु न संशयः ।। 7.106.10 ।।
tato dharme vinaṣṭe tu trailokyaṃ sacarācaram | sadevarṣigaṇaṃ sarvaṃ vinaśyettu na saṃśayaḥ || 7.106.10 ||
Translation
And if dharma is thus destroyed, the three worlds with all that moves and is unmoving, together with all the hosts of gods and seers, would surely perish — of this there is no doubt.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल त्रैलोक्यस्याभिपालनात् । लक्ष्मणेन विना चाद्य जगत्स्वस्थं कुरुष्व ह ।। 7.106.11 ।।
sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla trailokyasyābhipālanāt | lakṣmaṇena vinā cādya jagatsvasthaṃ kuruṣva ha || 7.106.11 ||
Translation
Therefore you, O tiger among men, for the sake of protecting the three worlds, even without Lakshmana, must now restore the world to well-being.
तेषां तत्समवेतानां वाक्यं धर्मार्थसंहितम् । श्रुत्वा परिषदो मध्ये रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ।। 7.106.12 ।।
teṣāṃ tatsamavetānāṃ vākyaṃ dharmārthasaṃhitam | śrutvā pariṣado madhye rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt || 7.106.12 ||
Translation
Having heard those assembled ones speak that counsel founded upon dharma and worldly good, Rama, in the midst of the assembly, spoke to Lakshmana.
विसर्जये त्वां सौमित्रे मा भूद्धर्मविपर्ययः । त्यागो वधो वा विहितः साधूनां तूभयं समम् ।। 7.106.13 ।।
visarjaye tvāṃ saumitre mā bhūddharmaviparyayaḥ | tyāgo vadho vā vihitaḥ sādhūnāṃ tūbhayaṃ samam || 7.106.13 ||
Translation
I cast you off, O Saumitri, lest there be a violation of dharma; for the virtuous, banishment or death is ordained, and the two are held to be equal.
रामेण भाषिते वाक्ये बाष्पव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः । लक्ष्मणस्त्वरितं प्रायात्स्वगृहं न विवेश ह ।। 7.106.14 ।।
rāmeṇa bhāṣite vākye bāṣpavyākulitendriyaḥ | lakṣmaṇastvaritaṃ prāyātsvagṛhaṃ na viveśa ha || 7.106.14 ||
Translation
When this word had been spoken by Rama, Lakshmana, his senses overwhelmed with tears, swiftly went forth and did not enter his own house.
स गत्वा सरयूतीरमुपस्पृश्य कृताञ्जलिः । निगृह्य सर्वस्रोतांसि निःश्वासं न मुमोच ह ।। 7.106.15 ।।
sa gatvā sarayūtīramupaspṛśya kṛtāñjaliḥ | nigṛhya sarvasrotāṃsi niḥśvāsaṃ na mumoca ha || 7.106.15 ||
Translation
Having gone to the bank of the Sarayu and touched its water with folded hands, restraining all the channels of his senses, he did not let go his breath.
अनिःश्वसन्तं युक्तं तं सशक्राः साप्सरोगणाः । देवाः सर्षिगणाः सर्वे पुष्पैरभ्यकिरंस्तदा ।। 7.106.16 ।।
aniḥśvasantaṃ yuktaṃ taṃ saśakrāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ | devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve puṣpairabhyakiraṃstadā || 7.106.16 ||
Translation
As he stood thus intent and breathing not, the gods together with Indra and the hosts of apsarases, with all the company of seers, then showered flowers upon him.
अदृश्यं सर्वमनुजैः सशरीरं महाबलम् । प्रगृह्य लक्ष्मणं शक्रस्त्रिदिवं संविवेश ह ।। 7.106.17 ।।
adṛśyaṃ sarvamanujaiḥ saśarīraṃ mahābalam | pragṛhya lakṣmaṇaṃ śakrastridivaṃ saṃviveśa ha || 7.106.17 ||
Translation
Then Indra, taking up Lakshmana — mighty and in his own body, invisible to all men — entered heaven with him.
ततो विष्णोश्चतुर्भागमागतं सुरसत्तमाः । दृष्ट्वा प्रमुदिताः सर्वे ऽपूजयन् समहर्षयः ।। 7.106.18 ।।
tato viṣṇoścaturbhāgamāgataṃ surasattamāḥ | dṛṣṭvā pramuditāḥ sarve 'pūjayan samaharṣayaḥ || 7.106.18 ||
Translation
Then the foremost of the gods, beholding the fourth part of Vishnu arrived, all rejoiced and, together with the great seers, paid him honor.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे षडुत्तरशततमः सर्गः ।। 106 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe ṣaḍuttaraśatatamaḥ sargaḥ || 106 ||
Translation
Thus in the sacred Shrimad Ramayana, the first poem composed by Valmiki, in the venerable Uttara Kanda, the one hundred and sixth canto.
