अध्यर्धयोजनं गत्वा नदीं पश्चान्मुखाश्रिताम् । सरयूं पुण्यसलिलां ददर्श रघुनन्दनः ।। 7.110.1 ।।
adhyardhayojanaṃ gatvā nadīṃ paścānmukhāśritām | sarayūṃ puṇyasalilāṃ dadarśa raghunandanaḥ || 7.110.1 ||
Translation
Having gone a yojana and a half, the delight of the Raghus beheld the river Sarayu of holy waters, which flows facing the west.
तां नदीमाकुलावर्तां सर्वत्रानुसरन्नृपः । आगतः सप्रजो रामस्तं देशं रघुनन्दनः ।। 7.110.2 ।।
tāṃ nadīmākulāvartāṃ sarvatrānusarannṛpaḥ | āgataḥ saprajo rāmastaṃ deśaṃ raghunandanaḥ || 7.110.2 ||
Translation
Following that river of swirling eddies everywhere along its course, the king Rama, the delight of the Raghus, arrived together with his people at that region.
अथ तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते तु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः । सर्वैः परिवृतो देवैर्ऋषिभिश्च महात्मभिः ।। 7.110.3 ।।
atha tasminmuhūrte tu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | sarvaiḥ parivṛto devairṛṣibhiśca mahātmabhiḥ || 7.110.3 ||
Translation
Then at that very moment Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, surrounded by all the gods and by the great-souled sages,
आययौ यत्र काकुत्स्थः स्वर्गाय समुपस्थितः । विमानशतकोटीभिर्दिव्याभिरभिसंवृतः ।। 7.110.4 ।।
āyayau yatra kākutsthaḥ svargāya samupasthitaḥ | vimānaśatakoṭībhirdivyābhirabhisaṃvṛtaḥ || 7.110.4 ||
Translation
came to the place where Kakutstha stood, set out for heaven, encompassed all around by hundreds of millions of divine celestial chariots.
दिव्यतेजोवृतं व्योम ज्योतिर्भूतमनुत्तमम् । स्वयम्प्रभैः स्वतेजोभिः स्वर्गिभिः पुण्यकर्मभिः ।। 7.110.5 ।।
divyatejovṛtaṃ vyoma jyotirbhūtamanuttamam | svayamprabhaiḥ svatejobhiḥ svargibhiḥ puṇyakarmabhiḥ || 7.110.5 ||
Translation
The sky was filled with divine radiance, become a mass of supreme, unsurpassed light, by the self-luminous dwellers of heaven of meritorious deeds, shining with their own splendor.
पुण्या वाता ववुश्चैव गन्धवन्तः सुखप्रदाः । पपात पुष्पवृष्टिश्च देवैर्मुक्ता महौघवत् ।। 7.110.6 ।।
puṇyā vātā vavuścaiva gandhavantaḥ sukhapradāḥ | papāta puṣpavṛṣṭiśca devairmuktā mahaughavat || 7.110.6 ||
Translation
Holy breezes blew, fragrant and bringing delight, and a rain of flowers, released by the gods, fell down like a great flood.
तस्मिंस्तूर्यशतैः कीर्णे गन्धर्वाप्सरसङ्कुले । सरयूसलिलं रामः पद्भ्यां समुपचक्रमे ।। 7.110.7 ।।
tasmiṃstūryaśataiḥ kīrṇe gandharvāpsarasaṅkule | sarayūsalilaṃ rāmaḥ padbhyāṃ samupacakrame || 7.110.7 ||
Translation
While that place was filled with hundreds of musical instruments and thronged with Gandharvas and Apsaras, Rama set out on foot toward the waters of the Sarayu.
ततः पितामहो वाणीमन्तरिक्षादभाषत । आगच्छ विष्णो भद्रं ते दिष्ट्या प्राप्तो ऽसि राघव ।। 7.110.8 ।।
tataḥ pitāmaho vāṇīmantarikṣādabhāṣata | āgaccha viṣṇo bhadraṃ te diṣṭyā prāpto 'si rāghava || 7.110.8 ||
Translation
Then the Grandsire spoke a voice from the sky: "Come, O Vishnu, blessings be upon you; by good fortune you have arrived, O Raghava."
भ्रातृभिः सह देवाभैः प्रविशस्व स्विकां तनुम् । यामिच्छसि महाबाहो तां तनुं प्रविश स्विकाम् । वैष्णवीं तां महातेजस्तद्वाकाशं सनातनम् ।। 7.110.9 ।।
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha devābhaiḥ praviśasva svikāṃ tanum | yāmicchasi mahābāho tāṃ tanuṃ praviśa svikām | vaiṣṇavīṃ tāṃ mahātejastadvākāśaṃ sanātanam || 7.110.9 ||
Translation
"Together with your brothers, who are like gods, enter your own body. Whichever form you desire, O mighty-armed one, enter that, your own form — that Vaishnava form, O greatly resplendent one, or the eternal ether."
त्वं हि लोकगतिर्देव न त्वां केचित्प्रजानते । ऋते मायां विशालाक्षीं तव पूर्वपरिग्रहाम् । त्वामचिन्त्यं महद्भूतमक्षयं सर्वसङ्ग्रहम् ।। 7.110.10 ।।
tvaṃ hi lokagatirdeva na tvāṃ kecitprajānate | ṛte māyāṃ viśālākṣīṃ tava pūrvaparigrahām | tvāmacintyaṃ mahadbhūtamakṣayaṃ sarvasaṅgraham || 7.110.10 ||
Translation
"For you, O god, are the refuge of the worlds, and none truly knows you, except the large-eyed Maya, who was your consort of old; you who are the inconceivable, the great Being, the imperishable, the receptacle of all."
यामिच्छसि महातेजस्तां तनुं प्रविश स्वयम् ।। 7.110.11 ।। ां
yāmicchasi mahātejastāṃ tanuṃ praviśa svayam || 7.110.11 || ्āṃ
Translation
"Whichever form you desire, O greatly resplendent one, enter that form yourself."
विशालाक्षीं तव पूर्वपरिग्रहाम् । पितामहवचः श्रुत्वा विनिश्चित्य महामतिः । विवेश वैष्णवं तेजः सशरीरः सहानुजः ।। 7.110.12 ।।
viśālākṣīṃ tava pūrvaparigrahām | pitāmahavacaḥ śrutvā viniścitya mahāmatiḥ | viveśa vaiṣṇavaṃ tejaḥ saśarīraḥ sahānujaḥ || 7.110.12 ||
Translation
"...the large-eyed one, who was your consort of old." Having heard the Grandsire's words, the greatly wise one made his resolve and entered the Vaishnava effulgence, with his body and together with his younger brothers.
ततो विष्णुमयं देवं पूजयन्ति स्म देवताः । साध्या मरुद्गणाश्चैव सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः ।। 7.110.13 ।।
tato viṣṇumayaṃ devaṃ pūjayanti sma devatāḥ | sādhyā marudgaṇāścaiva sendrāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ || 7.110.13 ||
Translation
Thereupon the deities worshipped the god who was the very embodiment of Vishnu — the Sadhyas and the hosts of Maruts, together with Indra and led by Agni.
ये च दिव्या ऋषिगणा गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्च याः । सुपर्णनागयक्षाश्च दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः ।। 7.110.14 ।।
ye ca divyā ṛṣigaṇā gandharvāpsarasaśca yāḥ | suparṇanāgayakṣāśca daityadānavarākṣasāḥ || 7.110.14 ||
Translation
And the divine hosts of sages, and the Gandharvas and the Apsaras, and the Suparnas, Nagas, and Yakshas, and the Daityas, Danavas, and Rakshasas worshipped him as well.
सर्वं पुष्टं प्रमुदितं सुसम्पूर्णमनोरथम् । साधु साध्विति तैर्देवैस्त्रिदिवं गतकल्मषम् ।। 7.110.15 ।।
sarvaṃ puṣṭaṃ pramuditaṃ susampūrṇamanoratham | sādhu sādhviti tairdevaistridivaṃ gatakalmaṣam || 7.110.15 ||
Translation
Everything became flourishing and joyful, with every wish fulfilled; and with cries of "Excellent! Excellent!" from those gods, heaven became free of all impurity.
अथ विष्णुर्महातेजाः पितामहमुवाच ह । एषां लोकं जनौघानां दातुमर्हसि सुव्रत ।। 7.110.16 ।।
atha viṣṇurmahātejāḥ pitāmahamuvāca ha | eṣāṃ lokaṃ janaughānāṃ dātumarhasi suvrata || 7.110.16 ||
Translation
Then Vishnu of great splendor spoke to the Grandsire: "You ought to grant a world to these multitudes of people, O you of good vows."
इमे हि सर्वे स्नेहान्मामनुयाता यशस्विनः । भक्ता हि भजितव्याश्च त्यक्तात्मानश्च मत्कृते ।। 7.110.17 ।।
ime hi sarve snehānmāmanuyātā yaśasvinaḥ | bhaktā hi bhajitavyāśca tyaktātmānaśca matkṛte || 7.110.17 ||
Translation
"For all these illustrious ones have followed me out of affection; the devoted are to be cherished, and they have surrendered their very selves for my sake."
तच्छ्रुत्वा विष्णुवचनं ब्रह्मा लोकगुरुः प्रभुः । लोकान्सान्तानिकान्नाम यास्यन्तीमे समागताः ।। 7.110.18 ।।
tacchrutvā viṣṇuvacanaṃ brahmā lokaguruḥ prabhuḥ | lokānsāntānikānnāma yāsyantīme samāgatāḥ || 7.110.18 ||
Translation
Hearing that speech of Vishnu, Brahma, the lord and preceptor of the worlds, replied: "These who have assembled shall go to the worlds called Santanika."
यच्च तिर्यग्गतं किञ्चित्त्वामेवमनुचिन्तयत् । प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यति भक्त्या वै तत्सन्ताने निवत्स्यति ।। 7.110.19 ।।
yacca tiryaggataṃ kiñcittvāmevamanucintayat | prāṇāṃstyakṣyati bhaktyā vai tatsantāne nivatsyati || 7.110.19 ||
Translation
"And whatever creature gone into an animal birth has meditated upon you in this manner and shall give up its life in devotion, it shall dwell in that Santana world."
सर्वैर्ब्रह्मगुणैर्युक्ते ब्रह्मलोकादनन्तरे ।। 7.110.20 ।।
sarvairbrahmaguṇairyukte brahmalokādanantare || 7.110.20 ||
Translation
"...endowed with all the qualities of Brahman, in the world next to the world of Brahma."
वानराश्च स्विकां योनिमृक्षाश्चैव तथा ययुः । येभ्यो विनिस्सृताः सर्वे सुरेभ्यः सुरसम्भवाः ।। 7.110.21 ।।
vānarāśca svikāṃ yonimṛkṣāścaiva tathā yayuḥ | yebhyo vinissṛtāḥ sarve surebhyaḥ surasambhavāḥ || 7.110.21 ||
Translation
And the Vanaras and the bears too went to their own source — to those very gods from whom they had all sprung, being born of the gods.
तेषु प्रविविशे चैव सुग्रीवः सूर्यमण्डलम् । पश्यतां सर्वदेवानां स्वान्पितऽन्प्रतिपेदिरे ।। 7.110.22 ।।
teṣu praviviśe caiva sugrīvaḥ sūryamaṇḍalam | paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāṃ svānpita'npratipedire || 7.110.22 ||
Translation
Among them Sugriva entered the orb of the Sun, while all the gods looked on; and they returned to their own fathers.
तथोक्तवति देवेशे गोप्रतारमुपागताः । भेजिरे सरयूं सर्वे हर्षपूर्णाश्रुविक्लवाः ।। 7.110.23 ।।
tathoktavati deveśe gopratāramupāgatāḥ | bhejire sarayūṃ sarve harṣapūrṇāśruviklavāḥ || 7.110.23 ||
Translation
When the Lord of the gods had spoken thus, all of them, reaching the Gopratara crossing, plunged into the Sarayu, overcome and brimming with tears of joy.
अवगाह्य जलं यो यः प्राणी ह्यासीत् प्रहृष्टवत् । मानुषं देहमुत्सृज्य विमानं सो ऽध्यरोहत ।। 7.110.24 ।।
avagāhya jalaṃ yo yaḥ prāṇī hyāsīt prahṛṣṭavat | mānuṣaṃ dehamutsṛjya vimānaṃ so 'dhyarohata || 7.110.24 ||
Translation
Whatever living being, full of delight, immersed itself in the water cast off its human body and ascended into a celestial chariot.
तिर्यग्योनिगतानां च शतानि सरयूजलम् । सम्प्राप्य त्रिदिवं जग्मुः प्रभासुरवपूंषि च । दिव्या दिव्येन वपुषा देवा दीप्ता इवाभवन् ।। 7.110.25 ।।
tiryagyonigatānāṃ ca śatāni sarayūjalam | samprāpya tridivaṃ jagmuḥ prabhāsuravapūṃṣi ca | divyā divyena vapuṣā devā dīptā ivābhavan || 7.110.25 ||
Translation
Hundreds even of those that had gone into the animal births, on reaching the waters of the Sarayu, went to heaven with radiant bodies; divine, with divine forms, they became like blazing gods.
गत्वा तु सरयूतोयं स्थावराणि चराणि च । प्राप्य तत्तोयविक्लेदं देवलोकमुपागमन् ।। 7.110.26 ।।
gatvā tu sarayūtoyaṃ sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca | prāpya tattoyavikledaṃ devalokamupāgaman || 7.110.26 ||
Translation
And the immovable and moving beings, having gone to the water of the Sarayu and being touched by the moisture of that water, attained the world of the gods.
तस्मिन्नपि समापन्ना ऋक्षवानरराक्षसाः । ते ऽपि स्वर्गं प्रविविशुर्देहान्निक्षिप्य चाम्भसि ।। 7.110.27 ।।
tasminnapi samāpannā ṛkṣavānararākṣasāḥ | te 'pi svargaṃ praviviśurdehānnikṣipya cāmbhasi || 7.110.27 ||
Translation
In those waters too the bears, vanaras, and rakshasas met their end; they likewise, casting their bodies into the waters, entered heaven.
ततः समागतान्सर्वान्स्थाप्य लोकगुरुर्दिवि । जगाम त्रिदशैः सार्धं सदा हृष्टैर्दिवं महत् ।। 7.110.28 ।।
tataḥ samāgatānsarvānsthāpya lokagururdivi | jagāma tridaśaiḥ sārdhaṃ sadā hṛṣṭairdivaṃ mahat || 7.110.28 ||
Translation
Then the Teacher of the worlds, having established in heaven all those who had assembled there, departed together with the gods, who were ever rejoicing, to the great celestial realm.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे दशाधिकशततमः सर्गः ।। 110 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe daśādhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ || 110 ||
Translation
Thus ends the one hundred and tenth sarga in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the holy Ramayana, the first poem composed by the sage Valmiki.
