स तु दत्त्वा दशग्रीवो वनं घोरं स्वरस्य तत् । भगिनीं च समाश्वास्य हृष्टः स्वस्थतरो ऽभवत् ।। 7.25.1 ।।
sa tu dattvā daśagrīvo vanaṃ ghoraṃ svarasya tat | bhaginīṃ ca samāśvāsya hṛṣṭaḥ svasthataro 'bhavat || 7.25.1 ||
Translation
Now Dashagriva, having bestowed that fearsome forest upon Khara and having comforted his sister, became joyful and considerably more at ease.
ततो निकुम्भिला नाम लङ्कोपवनमुत्तमम् । तद्राक्षसेन्द्रो बलवान्प्रविवेश सहानुगः ।। 7.25.2 ।।
tato nikumbhilā nāma laṅkopavanamuttamam | tadrākṣasendro balavānpraviveśa sahānugaḥ || 7.25.2 ||
Translation
Then the mighty lord of the rakshasas, together with his followers, entered the excellent grove of Lanka named Nikumbhila.
ततो यूपशताकीर्णं सौम्यचैत्योपशोभितम् । ददर्श विष्ठितं यज्ञं श्रिया सम्प्रज्वलन्निव ।। 7.25.3 ।।
tato yūpaśatākīrṇaṃ saumyacaityopaśobhitam | dadarśa viṣṭhitaṃ yajñaṃ śriyā samprajvalanniva || 7.25.3 ||
Translation
There he beheld a sacrifice in progress, strewn with a hundred sacrificial posts and adorned with pleasant altars, blazing as it were with splendor.
ततः कृष्णाजिनधरं कमण्डलुशिखाध्वजम् । ददर्श स्वसुतं तत्र मेघनादं भयावहम् ।। 7.25.4 ।।
tataḥ kṛṣṇājinadharaṃ kamaṇḍaluśikhādhvajam | dadarśa svasutaṃ tatra meghanādaṃ bhayāvaham || 7.25.4 ||
Translation
Then he saw there his own son, the terrible Meghanada, clad in a black antelope-skin, bearing a water-pot and a tuft of hair as his emblem.
तं समासाद्य लङ्केशः परिष्वज्वाथ बाहुभिः । अब्रवीत्किमिदं वत्स वर्तसे ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः ।। 7.25.5 ।।
taṃ samāsādya laṅkeśaḥ pariṣvajvātha bāhubhiḥ | abravītkimidaṃ vatsa vartase brūhi tattvataḥ || 7.25.5 ||
Translation
Approaching him, the lord of Lanka embraced him with his arms and said: "What is this, my son, that you are engaged in? Tell me truly."
उशना त्वब्रवीत्तत्र यज्ञसम्पत्समृद्धये । रावणं राक्षसश्रेष्ठं द्विजश्रेष्ठो महातपाः ।। 7.25.6 ।।
uśanā tvabravīttatra yajñasampatsamṛddhaye | rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasaśreṣṭhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭho mahātapāḥ || 7.25.6 ||
Translation
Thereupon Ushanas, the foremost of the twice-born and of great austerity, spoke there to Ravana, the best of the rakshasas, concerning the fulfillment of the sacrificial undertaking.
अहमाख्यामि ते राजञ्छ्रूयतां सर्वमेव तत् । यज्ञास्ते सप्त पुत्रेण प्राप्तास्सुबहुविस्तराः ।। 7.25.7 ।।
ahamākhyāmi te rājañchrūyatāṃ sarvameva tat | yajñāste sapta putreṇa prāptāssubahuvistarāḥ || 7.25.7 ||
Translation
"I shall declare it to you, O king; let all of it be heard. Seven sacrifices of vast extent have been accomplished by your son.
अग्निष्टोमो ऽश्वमेधश्च यज्ञो बहुसुवर्णकः । राजसूयस्तथा यज्ञो गोमेधो वैष्ववस्तथा ।। 7.25.8 ।।
agniṣṭomo 'śvamedhaśca yajño bahusuvarṇakaḥ | rājasūyastathā yajño gomedho vaiṣvavastathā || 7.25.8 ||
Translation
The Agnishtoma, the Ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice), the sacrifice abounding in gold, the Rajasuya sacrifice, and likewise the Gomedha and the Vaishnava sacrifice.
माहेश्वरे प्रवृत्ते तु यज्ञे पुम्भिः सुदुर्लभे । वरांस्ते लब्धवान्पुत्रः साक्षात्पशुपतेरिह ।। 7.25.9 ।।
māheśvare pravṛtte tu yajñe pumbhiḥ sudurlabhe | varāṃste labdhavānputraḥ sākṣātpaśupateriha || 7.25.9 ||
Translation
When that sacrifice sacred to Maheshvara, which is most difficult for men to perform, had been undertaken, your son obtained these boons here directly from Pashupati himself.
कामगं स्यन्दनं दिव्यमन्तरिक्षचरं ध्रुवम् । मायां च तामसीं नाम यया सम्पद्यते तमः ।। 7.25.10 ।।
kāmagaṃ syandanaṃ divyamantarikṣacaraṃ dhruvam | māyāṃ ca tāmasīṃ nāma yayā sampadyate tamaḥ || 7.25.10 ||
Translation
A divine chariot that goes wherever one wishes and moves unfailingly through the sky, and the magic power named Tamasi, by which darkness is produced.
एतया किल सङ्ग्रामे मायया राक्षसेश्वर । प्रयुक्तया गतिः शक्या नहि ज्ञातुं सुरासुरैः ।। 7.25.11 ।।
etayā kila saṅgrāme māyayā rākṣaseśvara | prayuktayā gatiḥ śakyā nahi jñātuṃ surāsuraiḥ || 7.25.11 ||
Translation
O lord of the rakshasas, when this illusion is employed in battle, its course cannot be discerned even by the gods and the asuras.
अक्षयाविषुधी बाणैश्चापं चापि सुदुर्जयम् । अस्त्रं च बलवद्राजञ्छत्रुविध्वंसनं रणे ।। 7.25.12 ।।
akṣayāviṣudhī bāṇaiścāpaṃ cāpi sudurjayam | astraṃ ca balavadrājañchatruvidhvaṃsanaṃ raṇe || 7.25.12 ||
Translation
Two inexhaustible quivers full of arrows, a bow that is very hard to conquer, and a mighty weapon, O king, that shatters enemies in battle.
एतान्सर्वान्वरांल्लब्ध्वा पुत्रस्ते ऽयं दशानन । अद्य यज्ञसमाप्तौ च त्वां दिदृक्षुस्स्थितो ह्यहम् ।। 7.25.13 ।।
etānsarvānvarāṃllabdhvā putraste 'yaṃ daśānana | adya yajñasamāptau ca tvāṃ didṛkṣussthito hyaham || 7.25.13 ||
Translation
Having obtained all these boons, this is your son, O Dashanana; and now that the sacrifice is concluded, I have stood here desiring to see you.
ततो ऽब्रवीदृशग्रीवो न शोभनमिदं कृतम् । पूजिताः शत्रवो यस्माद्द्रव्यैरिन्द्रपुरोगमाः ।। 7.25.14 ।।
tato 'bravīdṛśagrīvo na śobhanamidaṃ kṛtam | pūjitāḥ śatravo yasmāddravyairindrapurogamāḥ || 7.25.14 ||
Translation
Then Dashagriva said: This that has been done is not good, since enemies headed by Indra have been honored with offerings.
एहीदानीं कृतं विद्धि सुकृतं तन्न संशयः । आगच्छ सौम्य गच्छामः स्वमेव भवनं प्रति ।। 7.25.15 ।।
ehīdānīṃ kṛtaṃ viddhi sukṛtaṃ tanna saṃśayaḥ | āgaccha saumya gacchāmaḥ svameva bhavanaṃ prati || 7.25.15 ||
Translation
Come now; know that what was done is indeed well done, there is no doubt of it. Come, gentle one, let us go to our own dwelling.
ततो गत्वा दशग्रीवः सपुत्रः सविभीषणः । स्त्रियो ऽवतारयामास सर्वास्ता बाष्पगद्गदाः ।। 7.25.16 ।।
tato gatvā daśagrīvaḥ saputraḥ savibhīṣaṇaḥ | striyo 'vatārayāmāsa sarvāstā bāṣpagadgadāḥ || 7.25.16 ||
Translation
Then Dashagriva, going forth together with his son and with Vibhishana, brought down all those women, who were choked and stammering with tears.
लक्षिण्यो रत्नभूताश्च देवदानवरक्षसाम् । तस्य तासु मतिं ज्ञात्वा धर्मत्मा वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। 7.25.17 ।।
lakṣiṇyo ratnabhūtāśca devadānavarakṣasām | tasya tāsu matiṃ jñātvā dharmatmā vākyamabravīt || 7.25.17 ||
Translation
They were beautiful and like jewels among the gods, danavas, and rakshasas. Knowing his mind set upon them, the righteous one (Vibhishana) spoke these words.
ईदृशैस्त्वं समाचारैर्यशोर्थकुलनाशनैः । धर्षणं ज्ञातिनां ज्ञात्वा स्वमतेन विचेष्टसे ।। 7.25.18 ।।
īdṛśaistvaṃ samācārairyaśorthakulanāśanaiḥ | dharṣaṇaṃ jñātināṃ jñātvā svamatena viceṣṭase || 7.25.18 ||
Translation
By such conduct as this, destructive of your fame, your wealth, and your lineage, knowing that it offends your kinsmen, you act according to your own willful judgment.
ज्ञातींस्तान्धर्षयित्वेमास्त्वया ऽ ऽनीता वराङ्गनाः । त्वामतिक्रम्य मधुना राजन्कुम्भीनसी हृता ।। 7.25.19 ।।
jñātīṃstāndharṣayitvemāstvayā ' 'nītā varāṅganāḥ | tvāmatikramya madhunā rājankumbhīnasī hṛtā || 7.25.19 ||
Translation
Having violated those kinsmen, these lovely women were carried off by you; yet, overstepping you, O king, Kumbhinasi was abducted by Madhu.
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्वाक्यं नावगच्छामि किं त्विदम् । को ऽयं यस्तु त्वया ऽ ऽख्यातो मधुरित्येव नामतः ।। 7.25.20 ।।
rāvaṇastvabravīdvākyaṃ nāvagacchāmi kiṃ tvidam | ko 'yaṃ yastu tvayā ' 'khyāto madhurityeva nāmataḥ || 7.25.20 ||
Translation
But Ravana spoke these words: I do not understand what this is. Who is this who has been named by you simply as Madhu?
विभीषणस्तु सङ्क्रुद्धो भ्रातरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् । श्रूयतामस्य पापस्य कर्मणः फलमागतम् ।। 7.25.21 ।।
vibhīṣaṇastu saṅkruddho bhrātaraṃ vākyamabravīt | śrūyatāmasya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalamāgatam || 7.25.21 ||
Translation
Then Vibhishana, greatly enraged, spoke these words to his brother: Hear how the fruit of this evil deed has come about.
मातामहस्य यो भ्राता ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सुमालिनः । माल्यवानिति विख्यातो वृद्धः प्राज्ञो निशाचरः ।। 7.25.22 ।।
mātāmahasya yo bhrātā jyeṣṭho bhrātā sumālinaḥ | mālyavāniti vikhyāto vṛddhaḥ prājño niśācaraḥ || 7.25.22 ||
Translation
He who was the brother of our maternal grandfather, the eldest brother of Sumali, renowned by the name Malyavan, an aged and wise night-ranger,
पिता ज्येष्ठो जनन्या नो ह्यस्माकं चार्यको ऽभवत् । तस्य कुम्भीनसी नाम दुहितुर्दुहिता ऽभवत् ।। 7.25.23 ।।
pitā jyeṣṭho jananyā no hyasmākaṃ cāryako 'bhavat | tasya kumbhīnasī nāma duhiturduhitā 'bhavat || 7.25.23 ||
Translation
he was the elder and indeed the father of our mother, and became our venerable forefather; of his daughter there was born a daughter named Kumbhinasi.
मातृष्वसुरथास्माकं सा च कन्या ऽनलोद्भवा । भवत्यस्माकमेवैषा भ्रातृणां धर्मतः स्वसा ।। 7.25.24 ।।
mātṛṣvasurathāsmākaṃ sā ca kanyā 'nalodbhavā | bhavatyasmākamevaiṣā bhrātṛṇāṃ dharmataḥ svasā || 7.25.24 ||
Translation
She was thus the daughter of our mother's sister, a maiden sprung from the fire; by dharma she is therefore the sister of us brothers.
सा हृता, मधुना राजन्राक्षसेन बलीयसा । यज्ञप्रवृत्ते पुत्रे तु मयि चान्तर्जलोषिते ।। 7.25.25 ।।
sā hṛtā, madhunā rājanrākṣasena balīyasā | yajñapravṛtte putre tu mayi cāntarjaloṣite || 7.25.25 ||
Translation
She was carried off, O king, by the powerful rakshasa Madhu, while your son was engaged in his sacrifice and I was dwelling under the water,
कुम्भकर्णे महाराज निद्रामनुभवत्यथ । निहत्य राक्षसश्रेष्ठानमात्यानिह सम्मतान् ।। 7.25.26 ।।
kumbhakarṇe mahārāja nidrāmanubhavatyatha | nihatya rākṣasaśreṣṭhānamātyāniha sammatān || 7.25.26 ||
Translation
and while Kumbhakarna, O great king, was experiencing his slumber. Having slain the foremost of the rakshasas, the esteemed counselors here,
धर्षयित्वा हृता सा तु सुप्ताप्यन्तःपुरे तव । श्रुत्वा ऽपि तन्महाराज क्षान्तमेव हतो न सः ।। 7.25.27 ।।
dharṣayitvā hṛtā sā tu suptāpyantaḥpure tava | śrutvā 'pi tanmahārāja kṣāntameva hato na saḥ || 7.25.27 ||
Translation
and having violated her, he carried her off even as she slept in your inner apartments; and though you heard of it, O great king, it was merely endured, and he was not slain.
यस्मादवश्यं दातव्या कन्या भर्त्रे हि भ्रातृभिः । तदेतत्कर्मणो ह्यस्य फलं पापस्य दुर्मते ।। 7.25.28 ।।
yasmādavaśyaṃ dātavyā kanyā bhartre hi bhrātṛbhiḥ | tadetatkarmaṇo hyasya phalaṃ pāpasya durmate || 7.25.28 ||
Translation
Since a maiden must of necessity be given in marriage to a husband by her brothers, this very thing, O wicked-minded one, is the fruit of this sinful deed of yours.
अस्मिन्नेवाभिसम्प्राप्तं लोके विदितमस्तु ते । विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रः स रावणः । दौरात्म्येनात्मनोद्धूतस्तप्ताम्भ इव सागरः ।। 7.25.29 ।।
asminnevābhisamprāptaṃ loke viditamastu te | vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā rākṣasendraḥ sa rāvaṇaḥ | daurātmyenātmanoddhūtastaptāmbha iva sāgaraḥ || 7.25.29 ||
Translation
Know that this has befallen you in this very world. Hearing the words of Vibhishana, Ravana, that lord of the Rakshasas, agitated by his own evil nature, was like the ocean with its waters heated to boiling.
ततो ऽब्रवीदृशग्रीवः क्रुद्धः संरक्तलोचनः । कल्प्यतां मे रथः शीघ्रं शूराः सज्जीभवन्तु नः ।। 7.25.30 ।।
tato 'bravīdṛśagrīvaḥ kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ | kalpyatāṃ me rathaḥ śīghraṃ śūrāḥ sajjībhavantu naḥ || 7.25.30 ||
Translation
Then the ten-necked one, enraged, his eyes turned red, said: Let my chariot be made ready at once, and let our warriors prepare themselves.
भ्राता मे कुम्भकर्णश्च ये च मुख्या निशाचराः । वाहनान्यधिरोहन्तु नानाप्रहरणायुधाः ।। 7.25.31 ।।
bhrātā me kumbhakarṇaśca ye ca mukhyā niśācarāḥ | vāhanānyadhirohantu nānāpraharaṇāyudhāḥ || 7.25.31 ||
Translation
Let my brother Kumbhakarna, and those who are the chief night-rangers, mount their vehicles, armed with various weapons of attack.
अद्य तं समरे हत्वा मधुं रावणनिर्भयम् । सुरलोकं गमिष्यामि युद्धकाङ्क्षी सुहृद्वृतः ।। 7.25.32 ।।
adya taṃ samare hatvā madhuṃ rāvaṇanirbhayam | suralokaṃ gamiṣyāmi yuddhakāṅkṣī suhṛdvṛtaḥ || 7.25.32 ||
Translation
Today, having slain that Madhu in battle, I, Ravana, fearless and eager for combat, surrounded by my friends, shall go to the world of the gods.
अक्षौहिणीसहस्राणि चत्वार्यग्र्याणि रक्षसाम् । नानाप्रहरणान्याशु निर्ययुर्युद्धकाङ्क्षिणाम् ।। 7.25.33 ।।
akṣauhiṇīsahasrāṇi catvāryagryāṇi rakṣasām | nānāpraharaṇānyāśu niryayuryuddhakāṅkṣiṇām || 7.25.33 ||
Translation
Four thousand foremost akshauhinis of the Rakshasas, eager for battle and bearing various weapons of attack, swiftly set forth.
इन्द्रजित्त्वग्रतः (अग्रतः) सैन्यात्सैनिकान्परिगृह्य च । जगाम रावणो मध्ये कुम्भकर्णश्च पृष्ठतः ।। 7.25.34 ।।
indrajittvagrataḥ (agrataḥ) sainyātsainikānparigṛhya ca | jagāma rāvaṇo madhye kumbhakarṇaśca pṛṣṭhataḥ || 7.25.34 ||
Translation
With Indrajit at the front of the army and gathering the soldiers, Ravana proceeded in the middle, and Kumbhakarna in the rear.
विभीषणश्च धर्मात्मा लङ्कायां धर्मामाचरत् । शोषाः सर्वे महाभागा ययुर्मधुपुरं प्रति ।। 7.25.35 ।।
vibhīṣaṇaśca dharmātmā laṅkāyāṃ dharmāmācarat | śoṣāḥ sarve mahābhāgā yayurmadhupuraṃ prati || 7.25.35 ||
Translation
And the righteous-souled Vibhishana practiced righteousness in Lanka, while all the rest, those illustrious ones, marched toward the city of Madhu.
खरैरुष्ट्रैर्हयैर्दीप्तैः शिंशुमारैर्महोरगैः । राक्षसाः प्रययुः सर्वे कृत्वा ऽ ऽकाशं निरन्तरम् ।। 7.25.36 ।।
kharairuṣṭrairhayairdīptaiḥ śiṃśumārairmahoragaiḥ | rākṣasāḥ prayayuḥ sarve kṛtvā ' 'kāśaṃ nirantaram || 7.25.36 ||
Translation
Upon asses, camels, horses, blazing crocodiles, and great serpents, all the Rakshasas advanced, filling the sky so that it was without a gap.
दैत्याश्च शतशस्तत्र कृतवैराश्च दैवतैः । रावणं प्रेक्ष्य गच्छन्तमन्वगच्छन्हि पृष्ठतः ।। 7.25.37 ।।
daityāśca śataśastatra kṛtavairāśca daivataiḥ | rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya gacchantamanvagacchanhi pṛṣṭhataḥ || 7.25.37 ||
Translation
And the Daityas there in their hundreds, who bore enmity toward the gods, seeing Ravana going forth, followed close behind him.
स तु गत्वा मधुपुरं प्रविश्य च दशाननः । न ददर्श मधुं तत्र भगिनीं तत्र दृष्टवान् ।। 7.25.38 ।।
sa tu gatvā madhupuraṃ praviśya ca daśānanaḥ | na dadarśa madhuṃ tatra bhaginīṃ tatra dṛṣṭavān || 7.25.38 ||
Translation
But the ten-faced one, having gone to the city of Madhu and entered it, did not see Madhu there; there he beheld his sister.
सा च प्रह्वाञ्जलिर्भूत्वा शिरसा चरणौ गता ।। 7.25.39 ।।
sā ca prahvāñjalirbhūtvā śirasā caraṇau gatā || 7.25.39 ||
Translation
And she, becoming humble with her palms joined together, went to his feet with her head bowed down.
तस्य राक्षसराजस्य त्रस्ता कुम्भीनसी तदा । तां समुत्थापयामास न भेतव्यमिति ब्रुवन् ।। 7.25.40 ।।
tasya rākṣasarājasya trastā kumbhīnasī tadā | tāṃ samutthāpayāmāsa na bhetavyamiti bruvan || 7.25.40 ||
Translation
Kumbhinasi, terrified then before that king of the Rakshasas, was raised up by him as he said, You must not be afraid.
रावणो राक्षसश्रेष्ठः किं चापि करवाणि ते । साब्रवीद्यदि मे राजन्प्रसन्नस्त्वं महाभुज । भर्तारं न ममेहाद्य हन्तुर्महसि मानद ।। 7.25.41 ।।
rāvaṇo rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ kiṃ cāpi karavāṇi te | sābravīdyadi me rājanprasannastvaṃ mahābhuja | bhartāraṃ na mamehādya hanturmahasi mānada || 7.25.41 ||
Translation
Ravana, best of the Rakshasas, said: What indeed may I do for you? She replied: If you are pleased with me, O king, O mighty-armed one, then, O bestower of honor, you ought not today to slay my husband here.
न हीदृशं भयं किञ्चित्कुलस्त्रीणामिहोच्यते । भयानामपि सर्वेषां वैधव्यं व्यसनं महत् ।। 7.25.42 ।।
na hīdṛśaṃ bhayaṃ kiñcitkulastrīṇāmihocyate | bhayānāmapi sarveṣāṃ vaidhavyaṃ vyasanaṃ mahat || 7.25.42 ||
Translation
For no fear like this is spoken of here for women of good family; of all fears, widowhood is the great calamity.
सत्यवाग्भव राजेन्द्र मामवेक्षस्व याचतीम् । त्वयाप्युक्तं महाराज न भेतव्यमिति स्वयम् ।। 7.25.43 ।।
satyavāgbhava rājendra māmavekṣasva yācatīm | tvayāpyuktaṃ mahārāja na bhetavyamiti svayam || 7.25.43 ||
Translation
Be true to your word, O lord of kings; look upon me as I entreat you. By you too, O great king, it was said of your own accord, You must not be afraid.
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्धृष्टः स्वसारं तत्र संस्थिताम् । क्व चासौ तव भर्ता वै मम शीघ्रं निवेद्यताम् ।। 7.25.44 ।।
rāvaṇastvabravīddhṛṣṭaḥ svasāraṃ tatra saṃsthitām | kva cāsau tava bhartā vai mama śīghraṃ nivedyatām || 7.25.44 ||
Translation
Then Ravana, delighted, said to his sister standing there: And where is this husband of yours? Let it be told to me quickly.
सह तेन गमिष्यामि सुरलोकं जयावहे । तव कारुण्यसौहार्दान्निवृत्तो ऽस्मि मधोर्वधात् ।। 7.25.45 ।।
saha tena gamiṣyāmi suralokaṃ jayāvahe | tava kāruṇyasauhārdānnivṛtto 'smi madhorvadhāt || 7.25.45 ||
Translation
Together with him I shall go to the world of the gods, that we may win victory. Out of compassion and affection for you, I desist from the slaying of Madhu.
इत्युक्ता सा समुत्थाप्य प्रसुप्तं तं निशाचरम् । अब्रवीत्सम्प्रहृष्टेव राक्षसी सा पतिं वचः ।। 7.25.46 ।।
ityuktā sā samutthāpya prasuptaṃ taṃ niśācaram | abravītsamprahṛṣṭeva rākṣasī sā patiṃ vacaḥ || 7.25.46 ||
Translation
Thus addressed, she, having roused that night-ranger who was deeply asleep, that Rakshasi, as though greatly delighted, spoke these words to her husband.
एष प्राप्तो दशग्रीवो मम भ्राता महाबलः । सुरलोकजयाकाङ्क्षी साहाय्ये त्वां वृणोति च ।। 7.25.47 ।।
eṣa prāpto daśagrīvo mama bhrātā mahābalaḥ | suralokajayākāṅkṣī sāhāyye tvāṃ vṛṇoti ca || 7.25.47 ||
Translation
This ten-necked one, my brother of great strength, has arrived; desiring to conquer the world of the gods, he chooses you for his ally.
तदस्य त्वं सहायार्थं सबन्धुर्गच्छ राक्षस । स्निग्धस्य भजमानस्य युक्तमर्थाय कल्पितुम् ।। 7.25.48 ।।
tadasya tvaṃ sahāyārthaṃ sabandhurgaccha rākṣasa | snigdhasya bhajamānasya yuktamarthāya kalpitum || 7.25.48 ||
Translation
Therefore, O rakshasa, go together with your kinsmen to aid him; for it is fitting to exert oneself for the purpose of one who is affectionate and devoted.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तथेत्याह मधुर्वचः ।। 7.25.49 ।।
tasyāstadvacanaṃ śrutvā tathetyāha madhurvacaḥ || 7.25.49 ||
Translation
Hearing that speech of hers, Madhu spoke sweet words and said, "So be it."
ददर्श राक्षसश्रेष्ठं यथान्यायमुपेत्य सः । पूजयमास धर्मेण रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ।। 7.25.50 ।।
dadarśa rākṣasaśreṣṭhaṃ yathānyāyamupetya saḥ | pūjayamāsa dharmeṇa rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam || 7.25.50 ||
Translation
Approaching in due form, he beheld the foremost of the rakshasas, and with proper observance he honored Ravana, the lord of the rakshasas.
प्राप्य पूजां दशग्रीवो मधुवेश्मानि वीर्यवान् । तत्र चैकां निशामुष्य गमनायोपचक्रमे ।। 7.25.51 ।।
prāpya pūjāṃ daśagrīvo madhuveśmāni vīryavān | tatra caikāṃ niśāmuṣya gamanāyopacakrame || 7.25.51 ||
Translation
Having received this honor in the dwelling of Madhu, the valiant Dashagriva, after spending one night there, set out to depart.
ततः कैलासमासाद्य शैलं वैश्रवणालयम् । राक्षसेन्द्रो महेन्द्राभः सेनामुपनिवेशयत् ।। 7.25.52 ।।
tataḥ kailāsamāsādya śailaṃ vaiśravaṇālayam | rākṣasendro mahendrābhaḥ senāmupaniveśayat || 7.25.52 ||
Translation
Then, reaching the mountain Kailasa, the abode of Vaishravana (Kubera), the lord of the rakshasas, who shone like the great Indra, encamped his army there.
