तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः । अवाक्छिरास्तथाभूत्वा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। 7.76.1 ।।
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ | avākchirāstathābhūtvā vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.76.1 ||
Translation
Having heard those words of Rama of effortless deeds, he, with his head still bent down, spoke these words.
शूद्रयोन्यां प्रसूतो ऽस्मि शम्बूको नाम नामतः । देवत्वं पार्थये राम सशरीरो महायशः ।। 7.76.2 ।।
śūdrayonyāṃ prasūto 'smi śambūko nāma nāmataḥ | devatvaṃ pārthaye rāma saśarīro mahāyaśaḥ || 7.76.2 ||
Translation
"I am born of a Shudra womb, Shambuka by name; I strive after godhood in this very body, O Rama of great renown.
न मिथ्या ऽहं वदे राम देवलोकजिगीषया । शूद्रं मां विद्धि काकुत्स्थ तप उग्रं समास्थितम् ।। 7.76.3 ।।
na mithyā 'haṃ vade rāma devalokajigīṣayā | śūdraṃ māṃ viddhi kākutstha tapa ugraṃ samāsthitam || 7.76.3 ||
Translation
I do not speak falsely, O Rama, out of my desire to conquer the world of the gods. Know me, O Kakutstha, to be a Shudra who has undertaken this fierce penance."
भाषतस्तस्य शूद्रस्य खड्गं सुरुचिरप्रभम् । निष्कृष्य कोशाद्विमलं शिरश्चिच्छेद राघवः ।। 7.76.4 ।।
bhāṣatastasya śūdrasya khaḍgaṃ suruciraprabham | niṣkṛṣya kośādvimalaṃ śiraściccheda rāghavaḥ || 7.76.4 ||
Translation
While that Shudra was yet speaking, Raghava drew his bright and spotless sword of beautiful luster from its sheath and cut off his head.
तस्मिञ्छूद्रे हते देवाः सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः । साधु साध्विति काकुत्स्थं प्रशशंसुर्मुहुर्मुहुः ।। 7.76.5 ।।
tasmiñchūdre hate devāḥ sendrāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ | sādhu sādhviti kākutsthaṃ praśaśaṃsurmuhurmuhuḥ || 7.76.5 ||
Translation
When that Shudra had been slain, the gods, together with Indra and led by Agni, praised Kakutstha again and again, crying "Well done! Well done!"
पुष्पवृष्टिर्महत्यासीद्दिव्यानां सुसुगन्धिनाम् । पुष्पाणां वायुमुक्तानां सर्वतः प्रपपात ह ।। 7.76.6 ।।
puṣpavṛṣṭirmahatyāsīddivyānāṃ susugandhinām | puṣpāṇāṃ vāyumuktānāṃ sarvataḥ prapapāta ha || 7.76.6 ||
Translation
There fell a great shower of celestial, sweetly fragrant flowers, released by the wind, raining down on every side.
सुप्रीताश्चाब्रुवन्रामं देवाः सत्यपराक्रमम् । सुरकार्यमिदं सौम्य सुकृतं ते महामते ।। 7.76.7 ।।
suprītāścābruvanrāmaṃ devāḥ satyaparākramam | surakāryamidaṃ saumya sukṛtaṃ te mahāmate || 7.76.7 ||
Translation
Greatly pleased, the gods said to Rama of true valor: "This is the work of the gods, O gentle one; well have you done it, O great-minded one.
गृहाण च वरं सौम्य यत्त्वमिच्छस्यरिन्दम । स्वर्गभाङ्नहि शूद्रो ऽयं त्वत्कृते रघुनन्दन ।। 7.76.8 ।।
gṛhāṇa ca varaṃ saumya yattvamicchasyarindama | svargabhāṅnahi śūdro 'yaṃ tvatkṛte raghunandana || 7.76.8 ||
Translation
And accept a boon, O gentle one, whatever you wish, O subduer of foes; for through your act this Shudra shall not partake of heaven, O delight of the Raghus."
देवानां भाषितं श्रुत्वा राघवः सुसमाहितः । उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं सहस्राक्षं पुरन्दरम् ।। 7.76.9 ।।
devānāṃ bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā rāghavaḥ susamāhitaḥ | uvāca prāñjalirvākyaṃ sahasrākṣaṃ purandaram || 7.76.9 ||
Translation
Having heard the speech of the gods, Raghava, well-composed, with joined palms spoke these words to the thousand-eyed Purandara.
यदि देवाः प्रसन्ना मे द्विजपुत्रः स जीवतु । दिशन्तु वरमेतं मे इप्सितं परमं मम ।। 7.76.10 ।।
yadi devāḥ prasannā me dvijaputraḥ sa jīvatu | diśantu varametaṃ me ipsitaṃ paramaṃ mama || 7.76.10 ||
Translation
"If the gods are gracious toward me, let that son of the Brahmana live. Grant me this boon, which is the supreme thing I desire.
ममापचाराद्यातो ऽसौ ब्राह्मणस्यैकपुत्रकः । अप्राप्तकालः कालेन नीतो वैवस्वतक्षयम् ।। 7.76.11 ।।
mamāpacārādyāto 'sau brāhmaṇasyaikaputrakaḥ | aprāptakālaḥ kālena nīto vaivasvatakṣayam || 7.76.11 ||
Translation
Through my fault that only son of the Brahmana departed; though his time had not come, he was carried off by Death to the abode of Vaivasvata (Yama)."
तं जीवयथ भद्रं वो नानृतं कर्तुमर्हथ । द्विजस्य संश्रुतो ऽर्थो मे जीवयिष्यामि ते सुतम् ।। 7.76.12 ।।
taṃ jīvayatha bhadraṃ vo nānṛtaṃ kartumarhatha | dvijasya saṃśruto 'rtho me jīvayiṣyāmi te sutam || 7.76.12 ||
Translation
Restore him to life; blessings be upon you, for you ought not to make my word untrue. For a promise was given by me to the Brahmana, and so I shall bring your son back to life.
राघवस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा विबुधसत्तमाः । प्रत्युचू राघवं प्रीता देवाः प्रीतिसमन्वितम् ।। 7.76.13 ।।
rāghavasya tu tadvākyaṃ śrutvā vibudhasattamāḥ | pratyucū rāghavaṃ prītā devāḥ prītisamanvitam || 7.76.13 ||
Translation
Having heard that speech of Raghava, the most excellent of the gods, well-pleased, replied to Raghava, who was himself filled with delight.
निर्वृतो भव काकुत्स्थ सो ऽस्मिन्नहनि बालकः । जीवितं प्राप्तवान्भूयः समेतश्चापि बन्धुभिः ।। 7.76.14 ।।
nirvṛto bhava kākutstha so 'sminnahani bālakaḥ | jīvitaṃ prāptavānbhūyaḥ sametaścāpi bandhubhiḥ || 7.76.14 ||
Translation
Be consoled, O Kakutstha: on this very day that boy has regained his life once more, and is reunited with his kinsmen as well.
यस्मिन्मुहूर्ते काकुत्स्थ शूद्रो ऽयं विनिपातितः । तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते बालो ऽसौ जीवेन समयुज्यत ।। 7.76.15 ।।
yasminmuhūrte kākutstha śūdro 'yaṃ vinipātitaḥ | tasminmuhūrte bālo 'sau jīvena samayujyata || 7.76.15 ||
Translation
O Kakutstha, in the very moment in which this Shudra was struck down, in that same moment was that boy joined again with life.
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते साधु याम नरर्षभ । अगस्त्यस्याश्रमपदं द्रष्टुमिच्छाम राघव ।। 7.76.16 ।।
svasti prāpnuhi bhadraṃ te sādhu yāma nararṣabha | agastyasyāśramapadaṃ draṣṭumicchāma rāghava || 7.76.16 ||
Translation
May you attain well-being, and blessings be upon you; let us go now, O bull among men. We wish to behold the hermitage of Agastya, O Raghava.
तस्य दीक्षा समाप्ता हि ब्रह्मर्षेः सुमहाद्युतेः । द्वादशं हि गतं वर्षं जलशय्यां समासतः ।। 7.76.17 ।।
tasya dīkṣā samāptā hi brahmarṣeḥ sumahādyuteḥ | dvādaśaṃ hi gataṃ varṣaṃ jalaśayyāṃ samāsataḥ || 7.76.17 ||
Translation
For the consecrated vow of that Brahmana-sage of vast splendor is now completed; the twelfth year has passed while he lay reposing upon the waters.
काकुत्स्थ तद्गमिष्यामो मुनिं समभिनन्दितुम् । त्वं चाप्यागच्छ भद्रं ते द्रष्टुं तमृषिसत्तमम् ।। 7.76.18 ।।
kākutstha tadgamiṣyāmo muniṃ samabhinanditum | tvaṃ cāpyāgaccha bhadraṃ te draṣṭuṃ tamṛṣisattamam || 7.76.18 ||
Translation
O Kakutstha, we shall go there to greet that sage with joy; and do you also come, blessings be upon you, to behold that most excellent of seers.
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय देवानां रघुनन्दनः । आरुरोह विमानं तं पुष्पकं हेमभूषितम् ।। 7.76.19 ।।
sa tatheti pratijñāya devānāṃ raghunandanaḥ | āruroha vimānaṃ taṃ puṣpakaṃ hemabhūṣitam || 7.76.19 ||
Translation
Having promised the gods, "So be it," the delight of the Raghus mounted that Pushpaka chariot adorned with gold.
ततो देवाः प्रयातास्ते विमानैर्बहुविस्तरैः । रामो ऽप्यनुजगामाशु कुम्भयोनेस्तपोवनम् ।। 7.76.20 ।।
tato devāḥ prayātāste vimānairbahuvistaraiḥ | rāmo 'pyanujagāmāśu kumbhayonestapovanam || 7.76.20 ||
Translation
Then those gods set forth in their many spacious aerial chariots, and Rama too swiftly followed to the penance-grove of the pitcher-born sage Agastya.
दृष्ट्वा तु देवान्सम्प्राप्तानगस्त्यस्तपसां निधिः । अर्चयामास धर्मात्मा सर्वांस्तानविशेषतः ।। 7.76.21 ।।
dṛṣṭvā tu devānsamprāptānagastyastapasāṃ nidhiḥ | arcayāmāsa dharmātmā sarvāṃstānaviśeṣataḥ || 7.76.21 ||
Translation
Seeing the gods arrived, Agastya, that treasury of austerities and righteous soul, paid honor to them all alike, without distinction.
प्रतिगृह्य ततः पूजां सम्पूज्य च महामुनिम् । जग्मुस्ते त्रिदशा हृष्टा नाकपृष्ठं सहानुगैः ।। 7.76.22 ।।
pratigṛhya tataḥ pūjāṃ sampūjya ca mahāmunim | jagmuste tridaśā hṛṣṭā nākapṛṣṭhaṃ sahānugaiḥ || 7.76.22 ||
Translation
Having received that homage and having in turn honored the great sage, the gods, delighted, departed with their attendants to the summit of heaven.
गतेषु तेषु काकुत्स्थः पुष्पकादवरुह्य च । ततो ऽभिवादयामास ह्यगस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम् ।। 7.76.23 ।।
gateṣu teṣu kākutsthaḥ puṣpakādavaruhya ca | tato 'bhivādayāmāsa hyagastyamṛṣisattamam || 7.76.23 ||
Translation
When they had gone, Kakutstha descended from the Pushpaka and then made his salutation to Agastya, the most excellent of seers.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा । आतिथ्यं परमं प्राप्य निषसाद नराधिपः ।। 7.76.24 ।।
so 'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā | ātithyaṃ paramaṃ prāpya niṣasāda narādhipaḥ || 7.76.24 ||
Translation
Having saluted that great soul, who blazed as it were with his radiance, and having received the highest hospitality, the lord of men sat down.
तमुवाच महातेजाः कुम्भयोनिर्महातपाः । स्वागतं ते नरश्रेष्ठ दिष्ट्या प्राप्तो ऽसि राघव ।। 7.76.25 ।।
tamuvāca mahātejāḥ kumbhayonirmahātapāḥ | svāgataṃ te naraśreṣṭha diṣṭyā prāpto 'si rāghava || 7.76.25 ||
Translation
The pitcher-born sage of great splendor and great austerity said to him: "Welcome to you, O best of men; by good fortune you have come, O Raghava.
त्वं मे बहुमतो राम गुणैर्बहुभिरुत्तमैः । अतिथिः पूजनीयश्च मम नित्यं हृदि स्थितः ।। 7.76.26 ।।
tvaṃ me bahumato rāma guṇairbahubhiruttamaiḥ | atithiḥ pūjanīyaśca mama nityaṃ hṛdi sthitaḥ || 7.76.26 ||
Translation
You are held in high esteem by me, O Rama, for your many excellent virtues; as a guest worthy of honor you ever dwell within my heart.
सुरा हि कथयन्ति त्वामागतं शूद्रघातिनम् । ब्राह्मणस्य तु धर्मेण त्वया जीवापितः सुतः ।। 7.76.27 ।।
surā hi kathayanti tvāmāgataṃ śūdraghātinam | brāhmaṇasya tu dharmeṇa tvayā jīvāpitaḥ sutaḥ || 7.76.27 ||
Translation
For the gods relate that you have come as the slayer of the Shudra, and that through righteousness, for the Brahmana's sake, you have caused his son to be restored to life.
उष्यतां चेह रजनी सकाशे मम राघव । प्रभाते पुष्पकेण त्वं गन्ता ऽसि पुरमेव हि ।। 7.76.28 ।।
uṣyatāṃ ceha rajanī sakāśe mama rāghava | prabhāte puṣpakeṇa tvaṃ gantā 'si purameva hi || 7.76.28 ||
Translation
Let the night be spent here in my presence, O Raghava; and in the morning you shall go to your own city by means of the Pushpaka.
त्वं हि नारायणः श्रीमांस्त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् । त्वं प्रभुः सर्वदेवानां पुरुषस्त्वं सनातनः ।। 7.76.29 ।।
tvaṃ hi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmāṃstvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam | tvaṃ prabhuḥ sarvadevānāṃ puruṣastvaṃ sanātanaḥ || 7.76.29 ||
Translation
For you indeed are the glorious Narayana; in you all things are established. You are the lord of all the gods; you are the eternal Person.
इदं चाभरणं सौम्य निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा । दिव्यं दिव्येन वपुषा दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा । प्रतिगृह्णीष्व काकुत्स्थ मत्प्रियं कुरु राघव ।। 7.76.30 ।।
idaṃ cābharaṇaṃ saumya nirmitaṃ viśvakarmaṇā | divyaṃ divyena vapuṣā dīpyamānaṃ svatejasā | pratigṛhṇīṣva kākutstha matpriyaṃ kuru rāghava || 7.76.30 ||
Translation
And this ornament, O gentle one, was fashioned by Vishvakarma, divine, shining with its own radiance through its divine form; receive it, O Kakutstha, and do me this kindness, O Raghava.
दत्तस्य हि पुनर्दाने सुमहत्फलमुच्यते । भरणे हि भवान् शक्तः सेन्द्राणां मरुतामपि ।। 7.76.31 ।।
dattasya hi punardāne sumahatphalamucyate | bharaṇe hi bhavān śaktaḥ sendrāṇāṃ marutāmapi || 7.76.31 ||
Translation
For in giving again what has been given, a very great reward is declared; and you indeed are able to support even the Maruts together with Indra.
त्वं हि शक्तस्तारयितुं सेन्द्रानपि दिवौकसः । तस्मात्प्रदास्ये विधिवत्तत्प्रतीच्छ नराधिप ।। 7.76.32 ।।
tvaṃ hi śaktastārayituṃ sendrānapi divaukasaḥ | tasmātpradāsye vidhivattatpratīccha narādhipa || 7.76.32 ||
Translation
For you are able to deliver even the gods together with Indra; therefore I shall bestow it upon you according to rule. Accept it, O lord of men.
दिव्यमाभरणं चित्रं प्रदीप्तमिव भास्करम् ।। 7.76.33 ।।
divyamābharaṇaṃ citraṃ pradīptamiva bhāskaram || 7.76.33 ||
Translation
This divine ornament, of wondrous design, blazed like the sun.
अथोवाच महात्मानमिक्ष्वाकूणां महारथः । रामो मतिमतां श्रेष्ठः क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ।। 7.76.34 ।।
athovāca mahātmānamikṣvākūṇāṃ mahārathaḥ | rāmo matimatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ kṣatradharmamanusmaran || 7.76.34 ||
Translation
Then Rama, the great chariot-warrior of the Ikshvakus, foremost among the wise, mindful of the duty of a Kshatriya, spoke to that great soul.
प्रतिग्रहो ऽयं भगवन्ब्राह्मणस्याविगर्हितः । गृह्णीयां क्षत्रियो ऽहं वै कथं ब्राह्मणपुङ्गव ।। 7.76.35 ।।
pratigraho 'yaṃ bhagavanbrāhmaṇasyāvigarhitaḥ | gṛhṇīyāṃ kṣatriyo 'haṃ vai kathaṃ brāhmaṇapuṅgava || 7.76.35 ||
Translation
"This acceptance of a gift, O blessed one, is not blameworthy for a Brahmana; but how am I, being a Kshatriya, to accept it, O bull among Brahmanas?
ब्राह्मणेन विशेषेण दत्तं तद्वक्तुमर्हसि । एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण प्रत्युवाच महानृषिः ।। 7.76.36 ।।
brāhmaṇena viśeṣeṇa dattaṃ tadvaktumarhasi | evamuktastu rāmeṇa pratyuvāca mahānṛṣiḥ || 7.76.36 ||
Translation
You ought to tell me how it came to be given, with special reference to a Brahmana." Thus addressed by Rama, the great sage replied.
आसन्कृतयुगे राम ब्रह्मभूते पुरायुगे । अपार्थिवाः प्रजाः सर्वाः सुराणां तु शतक्रतुः ।। 7.76.37 ।।
āsankṛtayuge rāma brahmabhūte purāyuge | apārthivāḥ prajāḥ sarvāḥ surāṇāṃ tu śatakratuḥ || 7.76.37 ||
Translation
"In the Krita age of old, O Rama, when this world had but newly come into being, all creatures were without a king, while among the gods there was Shatakratu (Indra, the performer of a hundred sacrifices).
ताः प्रजा देवदेवेशं राजार्थं समुपाद्रवन् । सुराणां स्थापितो राजा त्वया देव शतक्रतुः ।। 7.76.38 ।।
tāḥ prajā devadeveśaṃ rājārthaṃ samupādravan | surāṇāṃ sthāpito rājā tvayā deva śatakratuḥ || 7.76.38 ||
Translation
Those creatures ran to the Lord of the lord of gods (Brahma) for the sake of a king, saying: 'O god, by you Shatakratu has been established as king of the gods.
प्रयच्छ नो हि लोकेश पार्थिवं नरपुङ्गवम् । यस्मै पूजां प्रयुञ्जाना धूतपापाश्चरेमहि । न वसामो विना राज्ञा एष नो निश्चयः परः ।। 7.76.39 ।।
prayaccha no hi lokeśa pārthivaṃ narapuṅgavam | yasmai pūjāṃ prayuñjānā dhūtapāpāścaremahi | na vasāmo vinā rājñā eṣa no niścayaḥ paraḥ || 7.76.39 ||
Translation
Grant to us too, O lord of the world, a king who is a bull among men, by offering worship to whom we, cleansed of our sins, may live; for we shall not dwell without a king — this is our highest resolve.'
प्रजानां वचनं श्रुत्वा निश्चयित्वा ऽर्थमुत्तमम् ।। 7.76.40 ।।
prajānāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā niścayitvā 'rthamuttamam || 7.76.40 ||
Translation
Having heard the speech of the creatures and having determined upon the highest course,
ततो ब्रह्मा सुरश्रेष्ठो लोकपालान्सवासवान् । समाहूयाब्रवीत्सर्वांस्तेजोभागान्प्रयच्छत ।। 7.76.41 ।।
tato brahmā suraśreṣṭho lokapālānsavāsavān | samāhūyābravītsarvāṃstejobhāgānprayacchata || 7.76.41 ||
Translation
then Brahma, the best of the gods, having summoned all the guardians of the worlds together with Vasava (Indra), said to them: 'Give portions of your splendor.'
ततो ददुर्लोकपालाः सर्वे भागान्स्वतेजसः । अक्षुपच्च ततो ब्रह्मा यतो जातः क्षुपो नृपः ।। 7.76.42 ।।
tato dadurlokapālāḥ sarve bhāgānsvatejasaḥ | akṣupacca tato brahmā yato jātaḥ kṣupo nṛpaḥ || 7.76.42 ||
Translation
Thereupon all the guardians of the worlds gave portions of their own energy, and Brahma too gave a portion to Kshupa; from which the king Kshupa was born.
तं ब्रह्मा लोकपालानां सहांशैः समयोजयत् । ततो ददौ नृपं तासां प्रजानामीश्वरं क्षुपम् ।। 7.76.43 ।।
taṃ brahmā lokapālānāṃ sahāṃśaiḥ samayojayat | tato dadau nṛpaṃ tāsāṃ prajānāmīśvaraṃ kṣupam || 7.76.43 ||
Translation
Brahma joined him with the shares of the guardians of the worlds, and then bestowed Kshupa as king and lord of those creatures.
तत्रैन्द्रेण च भागेन महीमाज्ञापयन्नृपः । वारुणेन तु भागेन वपुः पुष्यति पार्थिवः ।। 7.76.44 ।।
tatraindreṇa ca bhāgena mahīmājñāpayannṛpaḥ | vāruṇena tu bhāgena vapuḥ puṣyati pārthivaḥ || 7.76.44 ||
Translation
Therein, by the portion of Indra, the king commands the earth; by the portion of Varuna the king nourishes his body.
कौबेरेण तु भागेन वित्तमासां ददौ तदा । यस्तु याम्यो ऽभवद्भागस्तेन शास्ति स्म स प्रजाः ।। 7.76.45 ।।
kaubereṇa tu bhāgena vittamāsāṃ dadau tadā | yastu yāmyo 'bhavadbhāgastena śāsti sma sa prajāḥ || 7.76.45 ||
Translation
By the portion of Kubera he then bestowed wealth upon those creatures; and that portion which belonged to Yama — by it he rules the creatures.
तत्रैन्द्रेण नरश्रेष्ठ भागेन रघुनन्दन । प्रतिगृह्णीष्व भद्रं ते तारणार्थं मम प्रभो ।। 7.76.46 ।।
tatraindreṇa naraśreṣṭha bhāgena raghunandana | pratigṛhṇīṣva bhadraṃ te tāraṇārthaṃ mama prabho || 7.76.46 ||
Translation
By that portion of Indra therein, O best of men, O delight of the Raghus, accept this — blessings be upon you — for my deliverance, O lord."
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा ऋषेः परमधार्मिकम् । तद्रामः प्रतिजग्राह मुनेराभरणं वरम् ।। 7.76.47 ।।
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā ṛṣeḥ paramadhārmikam | tadrāmaḥ pratijagrāha munerābharaṇaṃ varam || 7.76.47 ||
Translation
Having heard that supremely righteous speech of the sage, Rama accepted that excellent ornament from the sage.
प्रतिगृह्य ततो रामस्तदाभरणमुत्तमम् । आगमं तस्य दीप्तस्य प्रष्टुमेवोपचक्रमे ।। 7.76.48 ।।
pratigṛhya tato rāmastadābharaṇamuttamam | āgamaṃ tasya dīptasya praṣṭumevopacakrame || 7.76.48 ||
Translation
Then Rama, having received that surpassing ornament, set about to ask the resplendent sage about its origin.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं दिव्यं वपुषा युक्तमुत्तमम् । कथं वा भगवता प्राप्तं कुतो वा केन वा हृतम् ।। 7.76.49 ।।
atyadbhutamidaṃ divyaṃ vapuṣā yuktamuttamam | kathaṃ vā bhagavatā prāptaṃ kuto vā kena vā hṛtam || 7.76.49 ||
Translation
"This is most wondrous, divine, supreme, and endowed with beauty. How was it obtained by your holiness, and from where, or by whom was it taken away?
कुतूहलितया ब्रह्मन्पृच्छामि त्वां महायशः । आश्चर्याणां बहूनां हि निधिः परमको भवान् ।। 7.76.50 ।।
kutūhalitayā brahmanpṛcchāmi tvāṃ mahāyaśaḥ | āścaryāṇāṃ bahūnāṃ hi nidhiḥ paramako bhavān || 7.76.50 ||
Translation
Out of curiosity I ask you, O Brahmana of great renown; for you are the supreme treasury of many marvels."
एवं ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे मुनिर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् । शृणु राम यथावृत्तं पुरा त्रेतायुगे युगे ।। 7.76.51 ।।
evaṃ bruvati kākutsthe munirvākyamathābravīt | śṛṇu rāma yathāvṛttaṃ purā tretāyuge yuge || 7.76.51 ||
Translation
When Kakutstha (Rama) had spoken thus, the sage then uttered these words: "Listen, O Rama, to what came to pass of old in the Treta age.
रमणीयप्रदेशे ऽस्मिन् वने यद्दृष्टवानहम् । आश्चर्यं मे महाबाहो दानमाश्रित्य केवलम् ।। 7.76.52 ।।
ramaṇīyapradeśe 'smin vane yaddṛṣṭavānaham | āścaryaṃ me mahābāho dānamāśritya kevalam || 7.76.52 ||
Translation
In this delightful region, in this forest, that which I have beheld is a marvel to me, O mighty-armed one, resting solely upon the merit of giving.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे षट्सप्ततितमः सर्गः ।। 76 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe ṣaṭsaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ || 76 ||
Translation
Thus ends the seventy-sixth canto in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic poem composed by the sage Valmiki.
