एतदाख्याय रामाय महर्षिः कुम्भसम्भवः । अस्यामेवापरं वाक्यं कथायामुपचक्रमे ।। 7.80.1 ।।
etadākhyāya rāmāya maharṣiḥ kumbhasambhavaḥ | asyāmevāparaṃ vākyaṃ kathāyāmupacakrame || 7.80.1 ||
Translation
Having related this to Rama, the great sage born of a pitcher (Agastya) began yet another discourse within this very narrative.
ततः स दण्डः काकुत्स्थ बहुवर्षगणायुतम् । अकरोत्तत्र दान्तात्मा राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ।। 7.80.2 ।।
tataḥ sa daṇḍaḥ kākutstha bahuvarṣagaṇāyutam | akarottatra dāntātmā rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam || 7.80.2 ||
Translation
Then that Danda, O Kakutstha, for myriads of countless years ruled there as a self-controlled one over a kingdom from which all thorns had been removed.
अथ काले तु कस्मिंश्चिद्राजा भार्गवमाश्रमम् । रमणीयमुपाक्रामच्चैत्रे मासि मनोरमे ।। 7.80.3 ।।
atha kāle tu kasmiṃścidrājā bhārgavamāśramam | ramaṇīyamupākrāmaccaitre māsi manorame || 7.80.3 ||
Translation
Now at a certain time the king approached the lovely hermitage of Bhargava (Shukra) in the delightful month of Chaitra.
तत्र भार्गवकन्यां स रूपेणाप्रतिमां भुवि । विचरन्तीं वनोद्देशे दण्डो ऽपश्यदनुत्तमाम् ।। 7.80.4 ।।
tatra bhārgavakanyāṃ sa rūpeṇāpratimāṃ bhuvi | vicarantīṃ vanoddeśe daṇḍo 'paśyadanuttamām || 7.80.4 ||
Translation
There, in a part of the forest, Danda saw the daughter of Bhargava wandering — a maiden of unmatched, surpassing beauty, unequalled upon the earth.
स दृष्ट्वा तां सुदुर्मेधा अनङ्गशरपीडितः । अभिगम्य सुसंविग्नां कन्यां वचनमब्रवीत् ।। 7.80.5 ।।
sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ sudurmedhā anaṅgaśarapīḍitaḥ | abhigamya susaṃvignāṃ kanyāṃ vacanamabravīt || 7.80.5 ||
Translation
Beholding her, that man of exceedingly evil mind, pierced by the arrows of the bodiless god of love, approached the deeply agitated maiden and spoke these words.
कुतस्त्वमसि सुश्रोणि कस्य वा ऽसि सुता शुभे । पीडितो ऽहमनङ्गेन गच्छामि त्वां शुभानने ।। 7.80.6 ।।
kutastvamasi suśroṇi kasya vā 'si sutā śubhe | pīḍito 'hamanaṅgena gacchāmi tvāṃ śubhānane || 7.80.6 ||
Translation
"From where do you come, O fair-hipped one, and whose daughter are you, O auspicious lady? I am tormented by the god of love; I come to you, O lady of lovely face."
तस्य त्वेवं ब्रुवाणस्य मोहोन्मत्तस्य कामिनः । भार्गवी प्रत्युवाचेदं वचः सानुनयं नृपम् ।। 7.80.7 ।।
tasya tvevaṃ bruvāṇasya mohonmattasya kāminaḥ | bhārgavī pratyuvācedaṃ vacaḥ sānunayaṃ nṛpam || 7.80.7 ||
Translation
To him as he spoke thus — a lover crazed and deluded by passion — the daughter of Bhargava replied to the king with these conciliatory words.
भार्गवस्य सुतां विद्धि देवस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः । अरजां नाम राजेन्द्र ज्येष्ठामाश्रमवासिनीम् ।। 7.80.8 ।।
bhārgavasya sutāṃ viddhi devasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ | arajāṃ nāma rājendra jyeṣṭhāmāśramavāsinīm || 7.80.8 ||
Translation
"Know me to be the daughter of the divine Bhargava, whose deeds are untiring; my name is Araja, O lord of kings, the eldest, dwelling in the hermitage.
मा मां स्पृश बलाद्राजन्कन्या पितृवशा ह्यहम् । गुरुः पिता मे राजेन्द्र त्वं च शिष्यो महात्मनः । व्यसनं सुमहत्क्रुद्धः स ते दद्यान्महातपाः ।। 7.80.9 ।।
mā māṃ spṛśa balādrājankanyā pitṛvaśā hyaham | guruḥ pitā me rājendra tvaṃ ca śiṣyo mahātmanaḥ | vyasanaṃ sumahatkruddhaḥ sa te dadyānmahātapāḥ || 7.80.9 ||
Translation
"Do not touch me by force, O king, for I am a maiden subject to my father's will. My father is my guru, O lord of kings, and you are the disciple of that great soul; that great ascetic, when enraged, could inflict a very grievous calamity upon you.
यदि वान्यन्मया कार्यं धर्मदृष्टेन सत्पथा । वरयस्व नरश्रेष्ठ पितरं मे महाद्युतिम् ।। 7.80.10 ।।
yadi vānyanmayā kāryaṃ dharmadṛṣṭena satpathā | varayasva naraśreṣṭha pitaraṃ me mahādyutim || 7.80.10 ||
Translation
"But if there be aught else to be done by me along the righteous path seen by dharma, then ask my father of great splendor for my hand, O best of men.
अन्यथा तु फलं तुभ्यं भवेद्घोराभिसंहितम् । क्रोधेन हि पिता मे ऽसौ त्रैलोक्यमपि निर्दहेत् ।। 7.80.11 ।।
anyathā tu phalaṃ tubhyaṃ bhavedghorābhisaṃhitam | krodhena hi pitā me 'sau trailokyamapi nirdahet || 7.80.11 ||
Translation
"Otherwise a dreadful, terrible fruit shall befall you; for that father of mine could in his wrath consume even the three worlds.
दास्यते चानवद्याङ्ग तव मा याचितः पिता ।। 7.80.12 ।।
dāsyate cānavadyāṅga tava mā yācitaḥ pitā || 7.80.12 ||
Translation
"And being entreated, my father will give me to you, O you of faultless limbs."
एवं ब्रुवाणामरजां दण्डः कामवशं गतः । प्रत्युवाच मदोन्मत्तः शिरस्याधाय चाञ्जलिम् ।। 7.80.13 ।।
evaṃ bruvāṇāmarajāṃ daṇḍaḥ kāmavaśaṃ gataḥ | pratyuvāca madonmattaḥ śirasyādhāya cāñjalim || 7.80.13 ||
Translation
To Araja speaking thus, Danda — fallen under the sway of lust and crazed with intoxication, placing his joined palms upon his head — replied.
प्रसादं कुरु सुश्रोणि न कालं क्षेप्तुमर्हसि । त्वत्कृते हि मम प्राणा विदीर्यन्ते वरानने ।। 7.80.14 ।।
prasādaṃ kuru suśroṇi na kālaṃ kṣeptumarhasi | tvatkṛte hi mama prāṇā vidīryante varānane || 7.80.14 ||
Translation
"Show me your favor, O fair-hipped one; you ought not to let the time slip by, for on your account my life-breaths are bursting apart, O lady of lovely face.
त्वां प्राप्य मे वधो वा स्याच्छापो वा यदि दारुणः । भक्तं भजस्व मां भीरु भजमानं सुविह्वलम् ।। 7.80.15 ।।
tvāṃ prāpya me vadho vā syācchāpo vā yadi dāruṇaḥ | bhaktaṃ bhajasva māṃ bhīru bhajamānaṃ suvihvalam || 7.80.15 ||
Translation
"Though by gaining you my death may come, or a terrible curse, yet love me who am devoted to you, O timid one — me who love you and am utterly overwhelmed."
एवमुक्त्वा तु तां कन्यां दोर्भ्यां गृह्य बलाद्बली । विस्फुरन्तीं यथाकामं मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ।। 7.80.16 ।।
evamuktvā tu tāṃ kanyāṃ dorbhyāṃ gṛhya balādbalī | visphurantīṃ yathākāmaṃ maithunāyopacakrame || 7.80.16 ||
Translation
Having spoken thus, the strong one seized that maiden by force with both his arms and, as she struggled, set about ravishing her at his will.
एतमर्थं महाघोरं दण्डः कृत्वा सुदारुणम् । नगरं प्रययावाशु मधुमन्तमनुत्तमम् ।। 7.80.17 ।।
etamarthaṃ mahāghoraṃ daṇḍaḥ kṛtvā sudāruṇam | nagaraṃ prayayāvāśu madhumantamanuttamam || 7.80.17 ||
Translation
Having committed this most terrible and exceedingly cruel deed, Danda swiftly went away to his unrivaled city of Madhumanta.
अरजा ऽपि रुदन्ती सा आश्रमस्याविदूरतः । प्रतीक्षन्ति सुसंत्रस्ता पितरं देवसन्निभम् ।। 7.80.18 ।।
arajā 'pi rudantī sā āśramasyāvidūrataḥ | pratīkṣanti susaṃtrastā pitaraṃ devasannibham || 7.80.18 ||
Translation
And Araja too, weeping, not far from the hermitage, deeply terrified, awaited her father who was like unto a god.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे ऽशीतितमः सर्गः ।। 80 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe 'śītitamaḥ sargaḥ || 80 ||
Translation
Thus ends the eightieth canto in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the glorious Ramayana, the first poem, composed by Valmiki the seer.
