ऋषेर्वचनमाज्ञाय रामः सन्ध्यामुपासितुम् । उपाक्रमत्सरः पुण्यमप्सरोगणसेवितम् ।। 7.82.1 ।।
ṛṣervacanamājñāya rāmaḥ sandhyāmupāsitum | upākramatsaraḥ puṇyamapsarogaṇasevitam || 7.82.1 ||
Translation
Heeding the words of the sage, Rama, to worship the twilight, drew near to the sacred lake frequented by throngs of apsaras.
तत्रोदकमुपस्पृश्य सन्ध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम् । आश्रमं प्राविशद्रामः कुम्भयोनेर्महात्मनः ।। 7.82.2 ।।
tatrodakamupaspṛśya sandhyāmanvāsya paścimām | āśramaṃ prāviśadrāmaḥ kumbhayonermahātmanaḥ || 7.82.2 ||
Translation
There, having sipped water and performed the evening twilight devotions, Rama entered the hermitage of the great-souled Agastya, the pitcher-born sage.
तस्यागस्त्यो बहुगुणं कन्दमूलं तथौषधिम् । शाल्यादीनि पवित्राणि भोजनार्थमकल्पयत् ।। 7.82.3 ।।
tasyāgastyo bahuguṇaṃ kandamūlaṃ tathauṣadhim | śālyādīni pavitrāṇi bhojanārthamakalpayat || 7.82.3 ||
Translation
For him Agastya prepared, as a meal, abundant and wholesome roots and bulbs, healing herbs, and pure rice-grains and other sacred foods.
स भुक्तवान्नरश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् । प्रीतश्च परितुष्टश्च तां रात्रिं समुपाविशत् ।। 7.82.4 ।।
sa bhuktavānnaraśreṣṭhastadannamamṛtopamam | prītaśca parituṣṭaśca tāṃ rātriṃ samupāviśat || 7.82.4 ||
Translation
That best of men ate that food, which was like nectar; pleased and fully content, he passed that night there.
प्रभाते काल्यमुत्थाय कृत्वा ऽ ऽह्निकमरिन्दमः । ऋषिं समुपचक्राम गमनाय रघूत्तमः ।। 7.82.5 ।।
prabhāte kālyamutthāya kṛtvā ' 'hnikamarindamaḥ | ṛṣiṃ samupacakrāma gamanāya raghūttamaḥ || 7.82.5 ||
Translation
At dawn, rising at the proper hour and performing his daily rites, Rama, the foremost of the Raghus and subduer of foes, approached the sage in order to depart.
अभिवाद्याब्रवीद्रामो महर्षिं कुम्भसम्भवम् । आपृच्छे स्वां पुरीं गन्तुं मामनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ।। 7.82.6 ।।
abhivādyābravīdrāmo maharṣiṃ kumbhasambhavam | āpṛcche svāṃ purīṃ gantuṃ māmanujñātumarhasi || 7.82.6 ||
Translation
Having paid his respects, Rama spoke to the great sage born of the pitcher: "I take my leave to go to my own city; you ought to grant me permission to depart."
धन्यो ऽस्म्यनुगृहीतो ऽस्मि दर्शनेन महात्मनः । द्रष्टुं चैवागमिष्यामि पावनार्थमिहात्मनः ।। 7.82.7 ।।
dhanyo 'smyanugṛhīto 'smi darśanena mahātmanaḥ | draṣṭuṃ caivāgamiṣyāmi pāvanārthamihātmanaḥ || 7.82.7 ||
Translation
"I am blessed and favored by the sight of you, great-souled one; and I shall come again to behold you, for the purification of my own self."
तथा वदति काकुत्स्थे वाक्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् । उवाच परमप्रीतो धर्मनेत्रस्तपोधनः ।। 7.82.8 ।।
tathā vadati kākutsthe vākyamadbhutadarśanam | uvāca paramaprīto dharmanetrastapodhanaḥ || 7.82.8 ||
Translation
When Kakutstha spoke thus, that sage rich in austerities, whose guiding eye is righteousness, deeply delighted, uttered words wondrous to hear.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं वाक्यं तव राम शुभाक्षरम् । पावनः सर्वभूतानां त्वमेव रघुनन्दन ।। 7.82.9 ।।
atyadbhutamidaṃ vākyaṃ tava rāma śubhākṣaram | pāvanaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tvameva raghunandana || 7.82.9 ||
Translation
"Most marvelous is this speech of yours, Rama, with its auspicious syllables; you yourself are the purifier of all beings, O delight of the Raghus."
मुहूर्तमपि राम त्वां ये च पश्यन्ति केचन । पाविताः स्वर्गभूताश्च पूज्यास्ते सर्वदैवतैः ।। 7.82.10 ।।
muhūrtamapi rāma tvāṃ ye ca paśyanti kecana | pāvitāḥ svargabhūtāśca pūjyāste sarvadaivataiḥ || 7.82.10 ||
Translation
"Even those few, O Rama, who behold you for but a moment are purified and become destined for heaven, and are worthy of worship by all the gods."
ये च त्वां घोरचक्षुर्भिः पश्यन्ति प्राणिनो भुवि । हतास्ते यमदण्डेन सद्यो निरयगामिनः ।। 7.82.11 ।।
ye ca tvāṃ ghoracakṣurbhiḥ paśyanti prāṇino bhuvi | hatāste yamadaṇḍena sadyo nirayagāminaḥ || 7.82.11 ||
Translation
"But those creatures on earth who look upon you with malevolent eyes are struck down by the rod of Yama and go at once to hell."
ईदृशस्त्वं रघुश्रेष्ठ पावनः सर्वदेहिनाम् । भुवि त्वां कथयन्तो ऽपि सिद्धिमेष्यन्ति राघव ।। 7.82.12 ।।
īdṛśastvaṃ raghuśreṣṭha pāvanaḥ sarvadehinām | bhuvi tvāṃ kathayanto 'pi siddhimeṣyanti rāghava || 7.82.12 ||
Translation
"Such are you, best of the Raghus, the purifier of all embodied beings; even those who merely speak of you upon the earth shall attain perfection, O Raghava."
गच्छ चारिष्टमव्याग्रः पन्थानमकुतोभयम् । प्रशाधि राज्यं धर्मेण गतिर्हि जगतो भवान् ।। 7.82.13 ।।
gaccha cāriṣṭamavyāgraḥ panthānamakutobhayam | praśādhi rājyaṃ dharmeṇa gatirhi jagato bhavān || 7.82.13 ||
Translation
"Go, unhindered, along a safe and fearless road that is free of all peril; rule your kingdom with righteousness, for you are the refuge of the world."
एवमुक्तस्तु मुनिना प्राञ्जलिः प्रग्रहो नृपः । अभ्यवादयत प्राज्ञस्तमृषिं पुण्यशालिनम् ।। 7.82.14 ।।
evamuktastu muninā prāñjaliḥ pragraho nṛpaḥ | abhyavādayata prājñastamṛṣiṃ puṇyaśālinam || 7.82.14 ||
Translation
Thus addressed by the sage, the wise king, with hands joined in reverence and his body bowed, saluted that sage abounding in merit.
अभिवाद्य मुनिश्रेष्ठं तांश्च सर्वांस्तपोधनान् । अध्यारोहत्तदव्यग्रः पुष्पकं हेमभूषितम् ।। 7.82.15 ।।
abhivādya muniśreṣṭhaṃ tāṃśca sarvāṃstapodhanān | adhyārohattadavyagraḥ puṣpakaṃ hemabhūṣitam || 7.82.15 ||
Translation
Having paid his respects to that best of sages and to all those ascetics rich in austerities, he calmly ascended the Pushpaka, adorned with gold.
तं प्रयान्तं मुनिगणा ह्याशीर्वादैः समन्ततः । अपूजयन्महेन्द्राभं सहस्राक्षमिवामराः ।। 7.82.16 ।।
taṃ prayāntaṃ munigaṇā hyāśīrvādaiḥ samantataḥ | apūjayanmahendrābhaṃ sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ || 7.82.16 ||
Translation
As he set forth, splendid as great Indra, the throngs of sages honored him on every side with their benedictions, as the immortals honor the thousand-eyed Indra.
स्वस्थः स ददृशे रामः पुष्पके हेमभूषिते । शशी मेघसमीपस्थो यथा जलधरागमे ।। 7.82.17 ।।
svasthaḥ sa dadṛśe rāmaḥ puṣpake hemabhūṣite | śaśī meghasamīpastho yathā jaladharāgame || 7.82.17 ||
Translation
Seated at ease upon the gold-adorned Pushpaka, Rama appeared like the moon beside a cloud at the coming of the rains.
ततो ऽर्धदिवसे प्राप्ते पूज्यमानस्ततस्ततः । अयोध्यां प्राप्य काकुत्स्थो मध्यकक्ष्यामवारुहत् ।। 7.82.18 ।।
tato 'rdhadivase prāpte pūjyamānastatastataḥ | ayodhyāṃ prāpya kākutstho madhyakakṣyāmavāruhat || 7.82.18 ||
Translation
Then, when half the day had passed, Kakutstha, being honored here and there along the way, reached Ayodhya and alighted at the middle enclosure.
ततो विसृज्य रुचिरं पुष्पकं कामगामि तत् । विसर्जयित्वा गच्छेति स्वस्ति ते ऽस्त्विति च प्रभुः ।। 7.82.19 ।।
tato visṛjya ruciraṃ puṣpakaṃ kāmagāmi tat | visarjayitvā gaccheti svasti te 'stviti ca prabhuḥ || 7.82.19 ||
Translation
Then the lord dismissed the beautiful Pushpaka, which travels at will, releasing it with the words, "Go, and may it be well with you."
कक्षान्तरविनिक्षिप्तं द्वास्स्थं रामो ऽब्रवीद्वचः । लक्ष्मणं भरतं चैव गत्वा तौ लघुविक्रमौ ।। ममागमनमाख्याय शब्दापयत मा चिरम् ।। 7.82.20 ।।
kakṣāntaravinikṣiptaṃ dvāssthaṃ rāmo 'bravīdvacaḥ | lakṣmaṇaṃ bharataṃ caiva gatvā tau laghuvikramau || mamāgamanamākhyāya śabdāpayata mā ciram || 7.82.20 ||
Translation
Rama then spoke these words to the gatekeeper stationed within the inner enclosure: "Go to Lakshmana and Bharata, the two swift in valor, announce my arrival, and summon them without delay."
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे व्द्यशीतितमः सर्गः ।। 82 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe vdyaśītitamaḥ sargaḥ || 82 ||
Translation
Thus ends the eighty-second canto in the venerable Uttara Kanda of the holy Ramayana, the first poem composed by Valmiki the sage.
