तच्छ्रुत्वा भाषितं तस्य रामस्याक्लिष्ट कर्मणः । द्वास्स्थः कुमारावाहूय राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ।। 7.83.1 ।।
tacchrutvā bhāṣitaṃ tasya rāmasyākliṣṭa karmaṇaḥ | dvāssthaḥ kumārāvāhūya rāghavāya nyavedayat || 7.83.1 ||
Translation
Having heard that speech of Rama of unwearied deeds, the doorkeeper summoned the two princes and announced them to Raghava.
दृष्ट्वा तु राघवः प्राप्तौ प्रियौ भरतलक्ष्मणौ । परिष्वज्य तदा रामो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। 7.83.2 ।।
dṛṣṭvā tu rāghavaḥ prāptau priyau bharatalakṣmaṇau | pariṣvajya tadā rāmo vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.83.2 ||
Translation
Seeing his dear brothers Bharata and Lakshmana arrived, Rama then embraced them and spoke these words.
कृतं मया यथा तथ्यं द्विजकार्यमनुत्तमम् । धर्मसेतुमथो भूयः कर्तुमिच्छामि राघवौ ।। 7.83.3 ।।
kṛtaṃ mayā yathā tathyaṃ dvijakāryamanuttamam | dharmasetumatho bhūyaḥ kartumicchāmi rāghavau || 7.83.3 ||
Translation
"I have duly performed the most excellent task for the twice-born; now, O Raghavas, I wish once again to set up a bridge of dharma."
अक्षय्यश्चाव्ययश्चैव धर्मसेतुर्मतो मम । धर्मप्रसाधकं ह्येतत् सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ।। 7.83.4 ।।
akṣayyaścāvyayaścaiva dharmaseturmato mama | dharmaprasādhakaṃ hyetat sarvapāpapraṇāśanam || 7.83.4 ||
Translation
"A bridge of dharma is regarded by me as imperishable and undecaying; for this accomplishes righteousness and destroys all sins."
युवाभ्यामात्मभूताभ्यां राजसूयमनुत्तमम् । सहितो यष्टुमिच्छामि तत्र धर्मो हि शाश्वतः ।। 7.83.5 ।।
yuvābhyāmātmabhūtābhyāṃ rājasūyamanuttamam | sahito yaṣṭumicchāmi tatra dharmo hi śāśvataḥ || 7.83.5 ||
Translation
"Together with you two, who are my very own selves, I wish to perform the most excellent Rajasuya sacrifice, for therein lies eternal dharma."
इष्ट्वा तु राजसूयेन मित्रः शत्रुनिबर्हणः । सुहुतेन सुयज्ञेन वरुणत्वमुपागमत् ।। 7.83.6 ।।
iṣṭvā tu rājasūyena mitraḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ | suhutena suyajñena varuṇatvamupāgamat || 7.83.6 ||
Translation
"For Mitra, the destroyer of foes, having offered the Rajasuya with well-poured oblation and well-conducted sacrifice, attained the rank of Varuna."
सोमश्च राजसूयेन इष्ट्वा धर्मेण धर्मवित् । प्राप्तश्च सर्वलोकेषु कीर्तिस्थानं च शाश्वतम् ।। 7.83.7 ।।
somaśca rājasūyena iṣṭvā dharmeṇa dharmavit | prāptaśca sarvalokeṣu kīrtisthānaṃ ca śāśvatam || 7.83.7 ||
Translation
"And Soma, the knower of dharma, having offered the Rajasuya in accordance with dharma, attained an eternal seat of fame among all the worlds."
अस्मिन्नहनि यच्छ्रेयश्चिन्त्यतां तन्मया सह । हितं चायतियुक्तं च प्रयतौ कर्तुमर्हथः ।। 7.83.8 ।।
asminnahani yacchreyaścintyatāṃ tanmayā saha | hitaṃ cāyatiyuktaṃ ca prayatau kartumarhathaḥ || 7.83.8 ||
Translation
"On this day let what is most beneficial be deliberated together with me; you two, being diligent, ought to do what is wholesome and conducive to the future."
श्रुत्वा तु राघवस्यैतद्वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः । भरतः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। 7.83.9 ।।
śrutvā tu rāghavasyaitadvākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ | bharataḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.83.9 ||
Translation
Having heard this speech of Raghava, Bharata, skilled in speech, folded his hands and spoke these words.
त्वयि धर्मः परः साधो त्वयि सर्वा वसुन्धरा । प्रतिष्ठिता महाबाहो यशश्चामितविक्रम ।। 7.83.10 ।।
tvayi dharmaḥ paraḥ sādho tvayi sarvā vasundharā | pratiṣṭhitā mahābāho yaśaścāmitavikrama || 7.83.10 ||
Translation
"In you, O virtuous one, rests the highest dharma; in you the whole earth is established, O mighty-armed one of boundless valor, and in you rests all glory."
महीपालाश्च सर्वे त्वां प्रजापतिमिवामराः । निरीक्षन्ते महात्मानं लोकानाथं यथा वयम् ।। 7.83.11 ।।
mahīpālāśca sarve tvāṃ prajāpatimivāmarāḥ | nirīkṣante mahātmānaṃ lokānāthaṃ yathā vayam || 7.83.11 ||
Translation
"All the kings of the earth gaze upon you, the great-souled lord of the worlds, just as the immortals gaze upon Prajapati, and just as we do."
पुत्राश्च पितृवद्राजन्पश्यन्ति त्वां महाबल । पृथिव्या गतिभूतो ऽसि प्राणिनामपि राघव ।। 7.83.12 ।।
putrāśca pitṛvadrājanpaśyanti tvāṃ mahābala | pṛthivyā gatibhūto 'si prāṇināmapi rāghava || 7.83.12 ||
Translation
"The sons too look upon you as upon a father, O king of great strength; you are the refuge of the earth and even of all living beings, O Raghava."
स त्वमेवंविधं यज्ञमाहर्तासि कथं नृप । पृथिव्यां राजवंशानां विनाशो यत्र दृश्यते ।। 7.83.13 ।।
sa tvamevaṃvidhaṃ yajñamāhartāsi kathaṃ nṛpa | pṛthivyāṃ rājavaṃśānāṃ vināśo yatra dṛśyate || 7.83.13 ||
Translation
"How then, O king, can you undertake a sacrifice of such a kind, in which the destruction of the royal dynasties upon the earth would be witnessed?"
पृथिव्यां ये च पुरुषा राजन्पौरुषमागताः । सर्वेषां भविता तत्र सङ्क्षयः सर्वकोपजः ।। 7.83.14 ।।
pṛthivyāṃ ye ca puruṣā rājanpauruṣamāgatāḥ | sarveṣāṃ bhavitā tatra saṅkṣayaḥ sarvakopajaḥ || 7.83.14 ||
Translation
"For all those men upon the earth, O king, who have attained manhood and valor, would meet their destruction therein, born of the wrath of all."
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल गुणैरतुलविक्रम । पृथिवीं नार्हसे हन्तुं वशे हि तव वर्तते ।। 7.83.15 ।।
sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla guṇairatulavikrama | pṛthivīṃ nārhase hantuṃ vaśe hi tava vartate || 7.83.15 ||
Translation
"You, O tiger among men, of incomparable valor through your virtues, ought not to destroy the earth, for indeed it lies under your sway."
भरतस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा ऽमृतमयं तदा । प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।। 7.83.16 ।।
bharatasya tu tadvākyaṃ śrutvā 'mṛtamayaṃ tadā | praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ || 7.83.16 ||
Translation
Hearing that speech of Bharata, which was like nectar, Rama, whose valor is truth itself, then experienced incomparable joy.
उवाच च शुभं वाक्यं कैकेय्यानन्दवर्धनम् । प्रीतो ऽस्मि परितुष्टो ऽस्मि तवाद्य वचने ऽनघ ।। 7.83.17 ।।
uvāca ca śubhaṃ vākyaṃ kaikeyyānandavardhanam | prīto 'smi parituṣṭo 'smi tavādya vacane 'nagha || 7.83.17 ||
Translation
And he spoke auspicious words that increased the delight of the son of Kaikeyi: "I am pleased, I am wholly satisfied this day with your speech, O sinless one."
इदं वचनमक्लीबं त्वया धर्मसमाहितम् । व्याहृतं पुरुषव्याघ्र पृथिव्याः परिपालनम् ।। 7.83.18 ।।
idaṃ vacanamaklībaṃ tvayā dharmasamāhitam | vyāhṛtaṃ puruṣavyāghra pṛthivyāḥ paripālanam || 7.83.18 ||
Translation
"This manly speech, founded upon dharma, has been uttered by you, O tiger among men, concerning the protection of the earth."
एष्यदस्मदभिप्रायाद्राजसूयात्क्रतूत्तमात् । निवर्तयामि धर्मज्ञ तव सुव्याहृतेन च ।। 7.83.19 ।।
eṣyadasmadabhiprāyādrājasūyātkratūttamāt | nivartayāmi dharmajña tava suvyāhṛtena ca || 7.83.19 ||
Translation
"From the intended Rajasuya, the most excellent of sacrifices, I turn back according to my own purpose, O knower of dharma, and on account of your well-spoken words."
लोकपीडाकरं कर्म न कर्तव्यं विचक्षणैः । बालानां तु शुभं वाक्यं ग्राह्य लक्ष्मणपूर्वज । तस्माच्छृणोमि ते वाक्यं साधु युक्तं महामते ।। 7.83.20 ।।
lokapīḍākaraṃ karma na kartavyaṃ vicakṣaṇaiḥ | bālānāṃ tu śubhaṃ vākyaṃ grāhya lakṣmaṇapūrvaja | tasmācchṛṇomi te vākyaṃ sādhu yuktaṃ mahāmate || 7.83.20 ||
Translation
"An act that brings affliction to the world should not be done by the wise; yet the auspicious counsel even of the young should be accepted, O elder brother of Lakshmana. Therefore I heed your words, well and rightly spoken, O wise one."
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे त्र्यशीतितमः सर्गः ।। 83 ।।
ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye śrīmaduttarakāṇḍe tryaśītitamaḥ sargaḥ || 83 ||
Translation
Thus ends the eighty-third sarga of the Uttara Kanda in the glorious Ramayana, the first epic poem composed by the seer Valmiki.
